Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve
simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.

Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will present picture graphs to her second grade students. The teacher will say, “I have a mug here
with M&Ms in it. You can’t look inside right now, but here is a graph that tells you what the colors of the
M&Ms are.”
Teacher: Can anyone tell me which color I have the most of?
Student: Red!
Teacher: Yes! You are correct. How did you know?
Student: There are more red m&m pictures!
Teacher: You’re right. Can you tell me how many red M&Ms there are in my cup? How long is
the red M&M bar? Is there a number which tells how long it is?
Once the students have figured out how many red M&Ms there are, reinforce that interpretative
ability by asking questions about the other colored M&Ms in the mug. Then go on to problems
related comparing.
Once the students are comfortable doing a variety of problems, have them each draw their own

picture graph. The teacher will hand students a fun sized packet of m&m’s. They will draw their
own picture graphs. The teacher will post their graphs and discuss who has the most red, green,
etc.
The teacher will inform parents and teachers that there will be a flipped classroom assignment
on the classroom blog. Students will be instructed to interview their friends, family, and
neighbors what their favorite ice cream flavor is. To prevent students from forgetting their data,
they can upload their data onto the blog.
On Monday, the students will bring their data and construct their picture graph. They will post
their graphs around the room. Students will walk around and compare their results with that of
their peers. The teacher and students will talk about what flavors were most popular based on
the picture graphs.

Importance of technology:
Technology is important for our ELL students and auditory learners. Oftentimes, students need directions
read to them multiple times. This flipped assignment allows students to listen to an audio file with the
directions to their assignment. They can listen to the directions as often as they need to. This is also beneficial
for students who need additional practice with the content. They can be given additional assignments to
master the content at home.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

Internet safety is a crucial point in my classroom! I feel that no one outside of parents and students should
have access to our classroom blog. To guarantee safety, my blog is password protected. Only parents and
students will have access to our blog. At the beginning of the school year, the teacher will get parents
permission for students to post any work on the blog. Students who are not given permission will turn in their
assignments using another method.
Reflective Practice: To move this assignment to Loti 6, the teacher could post their final projects onto the
classroom blog. Parents, grandparents and other family can view their work. The teacher can also post their
work around the school for other students to view.
