Virtualization & VMware Implementation in EA&C

R1/4V8
11:30AM~2:00PM, Tuesday, December 12, 2006

(30 min) – Jean: Introduction & Virtualization Overview

 Introduction
 What is virtualization? High level overview of the technology, VMware current
product line
 VMware Implementation Team goals/vision (practical benefits)
 Corporate Virtualization initiative, Project history (GSXESX)
 Raytheon Corporate Implementation in Andover (Ken’s production ESX
servers/environment)
 VMware Implementation Team support model/SLA
 General environmental statistics (i.e. production servers, specs, How many
VMs, how many virtualized from physical, how many redeployed etc.)

(30 min) – AJ: Current EA&C VMware Infrastructure

 A visual diagram of current Virtualization production environment
 ESN ESX Cluster, DRS/HA, Vmotion capabilities
 Security
 Backup/DR strategy: Monthly Image (EsxRanger), weekly full/daily
differential (Veritas Backup Exec)
o Special backup/snapshot requests before software upgrades are
available
 Resources:
o Internal VMware Information website: http://es-eng-
ntadmin.esn.us.ray.com/Windows_ServerTeam_Site/Virtualization/
(still under construction at the moment)
o http://wiki.esn.us.ray.com/index.php?title=Virtualization
o Corporate eRoom-RTN- Virtual Machine Community of Practice:

 Documentation/Procedures Repository (P2V Candidate
list/criteria, VM admin guide, how to request a VM etc.)
o Mason’s VM Creation Request & Management Web Site, Beta 3:

(15 min) – Scott: Challenges & Lessons learned Through Implementation &
Ahead of Us
 A realistic picture of our virtualized environment: Expectations VS. Reality
 Virtualization culture change & shock to admins
 Our Limited Linux/Unix experience
 SAN storage space limitation, budget constrains etc.
 SLA violations/conflicts
 Difficulties to standardize a provisioning model and process
 Technical issue escalation process/education
 Road blocks to building a robust environment
 Network limitation: Fight to enable VLAN across ESS/ESN so that a 4-node
cluster is possible, better DRS/HA/DR
 Examples of technical challenges:
o Vmware P2V struggle (flip files)
o NFS mounting
o ESXranger Backup (REDO logs) caused VMs to go into suspend mode
 A learning process for us all, but we live and learn

(15 min) – Scott: Next 3 Months VMware Infrastructure Implementation

Forecast
 Implement ESX Cluster in E1: Servers arrived, waiting on network drops
 Better performance/resource monitoring using esxCharter + other tools
learned in conference
o Come up with a Back-charging model using esxCharter
 Implement an ESX host server monitoring solution, i.e. HP Insight Manager,
or MOM, or Ground Work (recommended to us by one of the conference
attendees). Big Brother (IP ping for now)
 Implement Resource Pools for development and production VMs, set Min/Max
 Refine Mason’s VM Management Website
o Implement feedback for the VM request/creation process
o Phung's backend VM creation automation project
o Refine Provisioning Process (i.e. approval process, 48 hour turn-
around)/integration into the VM Request website
o Provisioning Model (set Development/Standard/High VM min/max,
disk, memory)
 Better documentation
o Emergency Response Process, a possible rotation schedule amongst
the VMware admins
o Technical issue escalation process
o ESX / Virtual Center Installation/configuration documentation
 Re-visit architecture/design issues to better tune the existing infrastructure
and plan future growth

(20 min) VMworld Conference (November 7~9, 2006) Knowledge Sharing

 (Jean)
o Industry trend: Virtual Appliance, virtual desktop, AMD chip
architecture
o Performance Monitoring, Case Study: Siemens
 (AJ)
o Virtualization: What NOT to do
 (Scott)
o Industry best practices
o Gap between us and cutting edge
o Case Study: HSBC

(30 min) Live Demo

 (AJ)
o Virtual Center Interface (Different tabs, functionality overview)
o Platespin P2V migration process/interface, (scheduled migration,
notification capability)
 (Jean)
o Vmotion demo with a test VM while playing a movie and doing a
continuous Ping to demonstrate the almost zero-down time.
 (Scott)
o How to request a new VM via Mason’s VM Management website?
o How to manage a VM using VI Client & RDP/RDC + using available
documentation (i.e. how to cold/hot reboot a VM)
o Cover basic VM troubleshooting tips: ping, RDP, and try to connect to
network shares via UNC or any applications that VM hosts.
