“Whoever migrates in the way of Allah will find many havens and plenitude in the earth.
And whoever leaves his home migrating toward Allah and His Apostle, and is then
overtaken by death, his reward shall certainly fall on Allah, and Allah is All-forgiving,
All-merciful.” (4:100)

In this holy verse, the subject of migration has been discussed from two points of view. At first, it has pointed to the good results and effects of migration in the life of godly people in this world. It says that those who migrate in the vast land of Allah, in the way of Allah, and for the sake of Allah, will find many secure and bountiful sites.

22

Then, it pays to the spiritual aspect of migration and points to this fact that if some ones get out of their houses and leave their homes with the intention of migration toward Allah, and

His

and die before reaching their destination, their reward is with Allah, and He, the Forgiving, the Merciful, will

Apostle

(P.B.U.H.

&

H.H.),

forgive their faults. Thus, the migrants are victorious in both cases. Itisinterestingthatmigration, not for self-protection but for preserving Islam, is an origin of date for Muslims. It forms the foundation of our political, social and propagative events totally. And, in any time and any place, if the same conditions

come forth, Muslims are ordained to migrate. It is noteworthy that mi- gration means leaving one’s home, people, and homeland,

for a new place of abode, with

a view to saving one’s faith from being compromised;

but, another interpretation

is also made of migration. It

has been said, “An emigrant is one who abandons sins.” Then, all penitents in the world who avoid sin are

migrants; like, Fuḍayl b. ‘Iyāḍ, who was a thief at the beginning but once when he was climbing a wall to enter a house, heard the melodious voice of the man reading this verse of the holy Qur’an, “Is it not time yet for those who have faith that their hearts should be humbled for Allah’s remembrance…” (57:16), and thought, “It is a revelation addressed directly to me. Yes, o Allah, it is

time, this very moment.” He climbed down and from that moment on, he abandoned theft, drinking, gambling, and other vices he had and became a migrant from sin. Later he was known not only as a virtuous man but as a guide and teacher of others. 1

OCCASIONAL NOTE 18 December: Arabic Language Day WHY ARABIC LANGUAGE FOR QUR’AN AND PRAYERS ?

OCCASIONAL NOTE

18 December: Arabic Language Day

WHY ARABIC LANGUAGE FOR

QUR’AN AND PRAYERS?

Why is the language of the holy Qur’an Arabic?

The region in which the Qur’an was revealed was an Arabic speaking region, and it was apparently impossible for the Holy Book to be revealed into any other language. “And thus: We have revealed to you a Qur’an in Arabic so that you may warn the foremost of all towns and

those who dwell around it, and may warn of the Day of Gathering, which is beyond all doubt. One group will be in the Paradise, and one group will be in the Flames.”

(42:7)

The principal language of the Qur’an is fiṭrat, so all human beings in any language can understand it. Indeed, what is important is understanding the verses of this Holy Book which is not unique to Arabic

speakers. The holy Qur’an has two dimensions: Lin- guistic and Semantic. Under- standing the first dimension requires knowing Arabic and the second dimension related to fiṭrat can be understood by all human beings regard- less to their language. Being more faithful would lead to better understanding of the Words of Allah.

Why do we have to perform prayers in Arabic? The main reason behind performing prayers
Why do we have to perform
prayers in Arabic?
The main reason behind performing
prayers only in Arabic after the fact that it
is part of the Prophet’s (P.B.U.H. & H.H.) sunna
and that in general, all forms of worship
need to be dictated to us by Allah to
avoid the alteration of the form of prayers
throughout the different ages and to be
protected from any potential change, and
if every individual is to perform prayers in
the language he/she speaks there would be
a fairly great possibility of the alteration
of the prayers by adding or omitting some
words or even mixing it with superstition,
also these changes may lead to other
changes in the fundamentals of the prayer
and little by little the concept of praying
would lose its importance and would be
completely forgotten.
Islam is a global religion that aims to unite
all Muslims and without a language that
they can understand each other through,
such a goal is unachievable. Arabic, which
according to the experts, is one of the most
comprehensive languages that has the
potential to be an international language,
one which Muslims can be united by and
will remain as a sign of Muslim unity, just
like in other aspects of Islam, like praying
toward one qibla and so forth. 1,2

THE TRUE PLACE OF RESEARCH FOR THOSE THIRSTY OF KNOWLEDGE

Raḍawī University of Islamic Sciences has been constructed to provide the necessary work force in the field of Islamic sciences so that the religious scholars and thinkers of this educational center can provide the thirsty people of the world with true message of Islam and teachings of Ahl al- Bayt (P.B.U.T.). In order to materialize one of the paramount aims of this university, that is to raise religious propagators for expanding the Islamic culture beyond the boundaries, non-Iranian students are also receiving education in this university. Its method is to combine Islamic seminary and university educational system and it awards certificate for various degrees of education including BA, MA and PhD.

IN STEP WITH THE SUN

Raawī University of Islamic Sciences, Building No.1

After the victory of Islamic Revolution, by utmost persever- ance of Āstān Quds Raḍawī’s Custodian the 400 year-old seminary buildings of Kheyrātkhān and Mīrzā Jaʿfar, that were the place for offering theological courses, were merged

and transformed, and the result was a great complex with the area of 22000 m 2 . Although this complex has maintained its primary ap- pearance, yet it enjoys old and new architectures together. It consists of 206 dormitories, 18 classrooms, library, am- phitheater, mosque, dining hall, laundry, and admin- istrative rooms. In 1405 A.H. coincident with the auspicious birth anniversary of Imam Riḍā (P.B.U.H.) this building was inaugurated.

Hu-

man Potentials

Due to the peculiar nature of the world and the human being, it is impossible to realize many of the spiritual and psychic potentials without enduring trials and tribulations. Just as an athlete strengthens his muscles by embarking on rigorous and excruciating exercises, human beings’ spiritual capabilities also require diligent and painstaking spiritual exercises in order to reach fruition.

1-

Cultivation

of

2- Divine Trials

One of the unchanging norms of Allah is that He tests human beings by afflicting them with trials and tribulations. Allah subjects people to various conditions in order that they may show their real character. Allah’s tests may consist in comfort, wealth, and leisure or it may take the form of hardships and adversities. Passing these tests successfully enables the human being to realize many of his inherent potentials, especially with respect to his spiritual aspects.

Affluent individuals bear a greater degree of responsibil- ity in comparison to unprivi- leged individuals on account of the greater amount of wealth they enjoy, and so the former must aid the latter. Another way in which Allah tests humankind is by way of afflictions. Whereas the previous test involves blessings, this form of Divine test has to do with difficulties and hardships. Should we endure hardships with patience, remaining steadfast in our faith and striving with our thought and deeds to fulfill our duties in spite of all

obstacles, Allah will reward us plentifully. Of course, this should not be misunderstood as implying that we should show indifference toward our worldly prosperity. Islam strongly encourages and instructs the believers to strive to improve even their material life-for themselves and their families-and promises them a two-fold reward for weathering the difficulties in this way:

One reward for working to improve the living standards of the family through lawful and sanctioned (ḥalāl) means and another reward for putting up with the obstacles that this task involves.

Allah’s Warnings

Enjoying the pleasure and bounties of the world, the human being is wont

to turn complacent and become neglectful of his higher obligations. Trials and tribulations serve as Allah’s alarms to awaken people from their habitual slumber and to remind them of their religious duties. The hardships and difficulties of life are advantageous in that they humble people and repress their arrogance and hubris, thereby preparing the appropriate circumstances for their return to the path of Allah.

usually takes for granted. It is only when we are deprived of a blessing of Allah that one usually takes for granted. It is only when we are deprived of a blessing that we truly appreciate it.

Consequence of Sins and Misdeeds

Some of the afflictions that befall us are a consequence of our sins and misdeeds. These afflictions constitute a Divine Chastisement. There are two general

Another advantage of undergoing trials and tribulations is that one is reminded of the multifarious blessings of Allah that one

types of Divine Chastisement: Worldly and otherworldly. Some sins and misdeeds may incur both types of chastisement, some just one. There are sins whose punishment Allah reserves entirely for the Hereafter. The Qur’an asserts that Allah helps in in- creasing the sins of those who oppose and resist Islam despite acknowledging its truth by giving them longevity and worldly pros- perity. In this way their sins mount in this world and so Allah inflicts upon them and exponentially more severe punishment in the Hereafter. The minor sins, however, are more liable to incur worldly punishment as opposed to otherworldly punishment. Thus Allah afflicts the faithful with hardships so that they may realize the wrong they have done and in this way they may make up for their sins and thus be absolved of otherworldly punishments. For, the severity and intensity of otherworldly sufferings is incomparably greater than worldly pun- ishments. The natural conclusion of this point is that the hardships that the believers endure may seem to be bad but they are in truth a form of Divine Mercy whereby Allah absolves the believers from having to undergo punishment in Hell. This allevia- tion in punishment is granted only to sinful believers. The pains and afflictions that dis- believers experience in this world in no way mitigates their otherworldly chastisement; a much more severe and painful chastisement awaits them in the Hereafter. 1

HOW TO BE

GREATER SINS:

DISOBEDIENCE TO PARENTS

One of the greater sins is to be disobedient to one’s parents as expressly mentioned in the traditions from the holy

and

the infallible Imams (P.B.U.T.). For instance, in a tradition, in response to the number of great sins, Imam Riḍā (P.B.U.H.) stated, “The greater sins are those, the performers

(P.B.U.H.

&

H.H.)

of which have been promised (Hell) fire.” Then he mentioned, “Disobedience to parents” as one of them. 1

1- Wasā’il al-Shīʿa, vol. 15, p. 318.

What is Disobedience to Parents?

Disobedience to parents means that the son or the daughter causes disrespect to parents by speech or actions or they do not obey them in matters which are within reason and matters which are not in any way against religion. 2

Benevolence to Par- ents is Wājib

The verses of the Qur’an

as well as the traditions of the Infallibles (P.B.U.T.) stress that benevolence toward parents is wājib. Here is one verse of the Qur’an and its interpretation by Imam

Ṣādiq (P.B.U.H.),

“Your Lord has decreed that you shall not worship anyone except Him, and [He has enjoined] kindness to parents. Should any of them or both reach old age at your side, do not say to them, ‘Fie!’ And do not chide them, but speak to them noble words.

Lower the wing of humility to them, mercifully…” (17:23-24) Imam Ṣādiq (P.B.U.H.) in- terpreted these

Lower the wing of humility to them, mercifully…”

(17:23-24)

Imam Ṣādiq (P.B.U.H.) in- terpreted these verses as follows, “‘Kindness to parents’ means, ‘Be good to your parents and if they are in need of something, procure it for them before they ask for it.’ ‘Speak to them noble words’ means, ‘If the parents beat you, say, “May Allah forgive you”’. ‘Lower the wing of humility to them, mercifully’ means, ‘Do not look at them with distaste. Do not raise your voice above theirs. When you walk with them do not precede them. When you go to a gathering, do not sit before they do. Never keep

your hand above theirs.’” 3

Consequences

Displeasing Parents

Several consequences have been mentioned for displeasing the parents in traditions, some of which

are to happen in this world and some in the Hereafter.

The

counted those who disobey their parents as the ones who “Allah will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection. Neither will He have mercy upon them, nor will He purify their sins and there is for them a horrible chastisement.” 4 The holy Prophet (P.B.U.H. & H.H.) said, “One who has

disobeyed his parents,

whatever (good) deeds he does, he will never inter the Heaven.” 5 He also has said, “There are three kinds of sins which are punished in this world, rather than being given respite till the Day of Resurrection. The first is disobedience to parents. The second is injustice upon men and third is thanklessness for favor.” 6

Imam

said, “The displeasing of parents causes decrease in sustenance and degradation (also follows).” 7,8
