Foreword
This document (prEN 15383:2005) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 155 "Plastics piping
systems and ducting systems", the secretariat of which is held by NEN.

This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.

This European Standard is a System Standard for manholes and inspection chambers made of plastics piping
systems using glass-reinforced thermosetting plastics (GRP) based on unsaturated polyester resin (UP), for
drainage and sewerage. This European Standard has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the
European Commission and the European Free Trade Association, and supports essential requirements of EU
Directive(s).

For relationship with EU Directive(s), see informative annex ZA, which is an integral part of this document.

This European Standard includes three informative and three normative annexes:
 ANNEX A: Guidance for the assessment of conformity (informative);
 ANNEX B: Test method for connections to sewer (normative);
 ANNEX C: Negative pressure test on units (normative);
 ANNEX D: Test method for gas-tightness of inspection chambers and manholes (informative);
 ANNEX E: Initial specific longitudinal compressive strength – test method (normative);

Products Directive (informative).

NOTE Separate ENV standard prCEN/TS 14632 [1], extended with annex A, covers the assessment of conformity.

Introduction
The performance of a sewerage network constructed with these products depends not only on the properties
of the product as required by this standard but also on the design and construction of the network as a whole
in relation to the environment and conditions of use.

4
prEN 15383:2005 (E)

1 Scope
This standard specifies the requirements for GRP-UP manholes and inspection chambers, with circular
chamber and shaft sections, for use within a drain or sewer system under gravity or at low head of pressure,
limited by non-pressure classification as defined in Clause 3.

This European standard covers components to be used in systems for the conveyance of one or more of the
following fluids:
 domestic wastewater;
 surface water;
 other waste waters (e.g. trade effluent).

Products covered by this standard are either complete manholes and inspection chambers or individual units
for the construction of manholes and inspection chambers, with an intended use in buried applications.

It specifies definitions, material specification and properties, types, characteristics, requirements, test methods,
marking.

NOTE Complete manholes or prefabricated units can also be used for other purposes such as pumping stations,
manholes for pipeline-equipment, backdrop manholes, ramp manholes, combined sewer overflow, storm water overflow,
items of drainage, housings for waste water treatment systems, items for sewerage treatment or sewerage disposal, when
corresponding additional requirements according to the relevant European Standards are fulfilled. If used in drinking water
systems, the requirements of the relevant standards for products in contact with drinking water shall apply to the
components in contact with drinking water.

5 Classification
Manholes and inspection chambers are divided into 3 loading classes as follows:
 Loading class I: Manholes and inspection chambers built of units that can not sustain axial compression
resulting from road vehicles in traffic areas (see 3.8.3). When used in areas of Group 2, Group 3, Group 4,
Group 5 and Group 6 (see Clause 6) a load-distributing slab shall be used (see 3.6.4).
 Loading class II: Manholes and inspection chambers built of units that sustains axial compression
resulting from road vehicles in traffic areas (see 3.8.3). When used in areas of Group 2, Group 3 and
Group 4 (see Clause 6) a load-transmitting slab shall be used (see 3.6.3).
 Loading class III: Manholes and inspection chambers built of units that shall sustain higher axial
compression than that resulting from road vehicles in traffic areas (see 3.8.3). A load-transmitting slab
shall be used (see 3.6.3).

6 Place of installation
The appropriate loading class of manhole or inspection chamber unit to be used depends upon the place of
installation. According to EN 124:1994, the various places of installation have been divided into groups
numbered from 1 to 6. Figure 6 and Figure 7 show the location of Group 1 to Group 4 in a highway
environment. Locations of Group 5 (areas imposing high wheel loads, e.g. docks, aircraft pavements) and
Group 6 (areas imposing particularly high wheel loads, e.g. aircraft pavements) relate to higher wheel loads
than those used in highway environment.

Key

regulations.

9.2 General composition

This standard covers components for manholes and inspection chambers made from GRP. Cylindrical
components shall be in accordance to prEN 14364:2002. Components made from other materials, such as
concrete slabs, metal or plastic ladders etc., may be incorporated provided they comply with a relevant
European standard, if available. If there is no such standard available they shall comply with national
standards or local regulations or provisions if they exist. They can be added if they have no negative influence
on the performance in use of the product.

9.3 Serviceability and durability

If components made from other materials are incorporated, they shall be suitably protected for the expected
service conditions.

If the manhole and inspection chamber are used in aggressive environment, such as sulphuric acid attack,
then all materials, such as concrete slabs, steel components, shall be verified for their serviceability and their
durability.

If sulphuric acid attack can occur (septic sewage), all concrete parts shall be protected with a GRP-liner that is
in close contact with the concrete part. The liner will be designed to sustain to external groundwater pressure.
Adhesion of the liner to the concrete part shall not be taken into account for the stability of the liner.

9.4 Design service temperature

Manholes and inspection chambers shall be suitable for a continuous water discharge temperature of 45 °C in
the case of DN’s less than or equal to 200, or of 35 °C for DN’s over 200.

9.5 General appearance and finish

All components shall be free of surface defects that may adversely affect the performance in use.

Burr that doesn’t harm the connection of the cover slab, the connection between manhole and sewer and/or
influences the flow is acceptable. Repair or touching up of manholes and inspection chambers during
fabrication may be done to meet the requirements of this standard.

26
prEN 15383:2005 (E)

9.6 Flexible connection

When designing the connections of sewers to manholes or inspection chambers the pipeline designer shall

13 Conformity evaluation

13.1 General

Conformity evaluation shall be as specified in Annex A.

NOTE 1 It is recommended that conformity to this European Standard should be demonstrated by means of product
certification by an approved certification body complying with the requirements of EN 45011. However, attention is drawn
to Table ZA.2 regarding the clauses to which the EU Commission’s decision on the level of attestation of conformity
applies for the purposes of CE marking, within the context of the Construction Products Directive (89/106). In order not to
submit the manufacturer to a double procedure, the Commission has declared that the more severe procedure, if applied,
can satisfy the less severe one reported and applying as described in ZA.2.

NOTE 2 When units are certified by an approved certification body (and in accordance with EN 45011) receiving
inspection by, or on behalf of, the purchaser is not necessary, except for the marking.

13.2 Product evaluation procedures

13.2.1 General

The procedures are as follows:

a) initial type testing of units (ITT);
b) process verification test (PVT);
c) further testing of samples in accordance with this European Standard.

13.2.2 Initial type testing and audit testing

Initial type testing and audit testing shall be undertaken to show conformity to this European Standard. Tests
previously performed in accordance with the requirements of this standard (same product of specified product
grouping, same characteristics, same method of sampling and same or more demanding test) may be taken
into account. Initial type testing shall also be undertaken whenever there is a significant change in design,
type of material or method of manufacture.

The initial type test and audit tests consists of taking samples (as indicated in Annex A) and subjecting them
to the relevant test(s). To satisfy the requirements of the initial type test and audit tests, all samples shall
conform to the requirements of this European Standard.

When the manufacturer’s test equipment is officially calibrated, initial type testing and audit testing shall
normally be carried out with that equipment.

13.2.3 Product verification tests

Product verification tests (PVT) shall be performed as described in Annex A.

14 Marking
Each unit, or where this is not practicable, each package of units, shall be marked indelibly and in a clearly
visible manner, by printing or formed directly on the units. Identification of the unit(s) shall be either on the
inside or the outside surface and made in such a way that no doubt is possible. Marking shall be done using
colouring that differs from the basic colouring of the product, in such a way that the marking does not harm the
requirements specified in this standard. Markings shall be readable without magnification.

Marking on manhole units or inspection chamber units shall include at least the following information:

36
prEN 15383:2005 (E)

a) the number of this standard for all units made of GRP or other European standard number for units made

Annex C
(normative)

Negative pressure test on units

C.1 Scope
This annex specifies the test method for the determination of negative pressure resistance of non-cylindrical
shapes of GRP-units for manholes or inspection chambers.

NOTE This test is equivalent to the vacuum test on flexible and reduced-articulation joints (ref. EN 1119:1996).

C.2 Principle
The test piece is connected on both sides with joints to end sealing devices. When under vacuum, the joint
and unit is monitored for leakage and damage.

C.3 Apparatus
C.3.1 End sealing devices of sizes and type appropriate to the components under test.

C.3.2 Supports to ensure the stability and make a safe test possible. Supports shall not modify stiffness of
the test piece or the end sealing devices.

C.3.3 Vacuum pomp capable of applying the required negative pressure.

C.3.4 Pressure gauges capable of measuring the negative pressures to an accuracy of ± 2 %.

C.4 Test pieces

Test piece and end sealing devices are assembled with joints and are positioned preferably vertical on the
same way they are used in the manhole or inspection chamber. If they are positioned horizontal, supports
shall not influence the ring stiffness of end sealing devices or test piece.

For the connection between the test piece and the end sealing devices the same joints for assembling the
units, according 10.5 and Table 7, shall be used.

The end-sealing device is assembled from a cap laminated on a piece of pipe

The cap can sustain the vacuum pa. The pipe has a length of 3 times the nominal size and a calculated
nominal stiffness.

pa = 24 × SN × (1-ν²) …(C.1)

where
ν is the transversal contraction value (Poissons ratio)

NOTE For the end-sealing devices, a pipe with a slightly higher stiffness of the connected unit may be used.

44
prEN 15383:2005 (E)

C.5 Procedure
a) Apply vacuum to negative pressure as indicated in Table 5. Seal and leave for not less than the in
Table 5 indicated test period;
b) Measure and record any change in pressure and compare the result with the requirement of Table 5.
Check for any pressure change greater than 10% of the applied vacuum during the test period;
c) Return the pressure to atmospheric pressure;
d) Inspect the joint for and record any observations of damage.

Annex D
(informative)

Test method for gas-tightness of inspection chambers and manholes

D.1 Scope
If requested gas-tightness of inspection chambers and manholes can be tested by negative pressure
resistance test.

NOTE: This test is equivalent to the vacuum test on flexible and reduced-articulation joints (ref. EN 1119:1996)

D.2 Principle
A tight cover plate using a standard sealing ring in accordance to 7.3 closes the inspection chamber or
manhole. Connection to sewers shall be closed using end-sealing devices. When under vacuum, the joints
and units are monitored for leakage and damage.

D.3 Apparatus
D.3.1 End sealing devices of sizes and type appropriate to the connection to sewers.

D.3.2 Supports to ensure the stability and make a safe test possible.

D.3.3 Vacuum pomp capable of applying the required negative pressure.

D.3.4 Pressure gauges capable of measuring the negative pressures to an accuracy of ± 2 %.

D.4 Test pieces

The inspection chamber or manhole is positioned preferably vertical on the same way they are used at the
construction site. Supports may be used to ensure the stability of the test arrangement.

End sealing devices on connections to sewers shall always be supported externally to avoid axial loading by
the connection to sewer on the chamber or shaft.

Cover plates on non-load-bearing chambers may be supported externally to avoid axial loading by the
coverplate on the chamber or shaft.

46
prEN 15383:2005 (E)

D.5 Procedure
a) Apply vacuum to negative pressure as indicated in table 7. Seal and leave for not less than the in Table 7
indicated test period;
b) Measure and record any change in pressure and compare the result with the requirement of table 7.
Check for any pressure change greater than 10% of the applied vacuum during the test period;
