PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

The problem to be considered is shown schematically in Figure 1.1. A cold fluid at 20°C flows into
the pipe through a large inlet, and mixes with a warmer fluid at 40°C that enters through a smaller
inlet located at the elbow. The pipe dimensions are in inches, and the fluid properties and
boundary conditions are given in SI units. The Reynolds number for the flow at the larger inlet is
50,800, so a turbulent flow model will be required.

2
RESULTS

1. Velocity 0f x=0.4, y=1.2

2. Velocity of x=2, y=1.2

3
3. Velocity of x=5, y=1.2

4. Velocity of x=0.4, y=5

4
ANALYSIS

 When the velocity of the large pipe is 0.4 m/s and the small pipe is 1.2 m/s, the xy plot of
velocity along the centerline of the outlet shows that the velocity increases then
decreases along the length. The maximum velocity is at around 6.75 m.

 When the velocity of the large pipe inlet is increased to 2 m/s and the velocity of small
pipe is the same, there is no significant change in velocity due to kinetic energy of the
large pipe being greater than the small pipe.

 When the velocity of the large pipe inlet is increased to 5 m/s and the velocity of small
pipe is the same, there is no significant change in velocity as in the last case due to kinetic
energy of the large pipe being greater than the small pipe.

 When the velocity of the large pipe is 0.4 m/s and the small pipe is 5 m/s, we observe an
unstable curve near the base of the larger pipe which is due to maximum experience of
turbulence caused by the flow from the smaller pipe.
