Short & Sweet

The purpose of an MLA formatted essay is to allow the reader to simply read, as opposed

to being distracted by the presentation of what is being read. This allows there to be a standard

for essay writers and keeps things in structurally sound. The Modern Language Association is

what the abbreviation MLA stands for. MLA formatting is the easiest for me, and seemingly

widest known form of essay writing in the United States.

9th Grade Language Arts Lesson Plan: Annotating Poetry

Overview
Students will learn how to use annotation with poetry. In class, they will be shown
some tools for annotating, why it is important and how to use it to make
connections within a poem. In this lesson, the students will annotate a poem and
make connections before reflecting on how this will make them a better reader.

Time Needed: about 1 hour

Objectives & Standards

Standard: 9 LA.2.1.3. – The student will be able to clarify an understanding of
text by creating outlines, notes, annotations, charts, and/or diagrams.

Standard: 9 LA.2.1.2. – The student will be able to apply reading strategies

to self-monitor for comprehension.

Materials Needed
1. Poem handout (Daffodils by, William Wordsworth)
2. "Making Annotations: User Guide" handout
3. Highlighters

Direction Instruction (this lesson plan follows a powerpoint)

1. Introduce the subject! "We're going to be learning how to annotate poetry,"
go on to explain that April is National Poetry Month, that’s why we’re doing this.
2. Engage the students by asking them to raise their hands if they like poetry.
Go on to ask if they have favorite poets, poems, etc. (Make sure you provide
enough time for the students to think and answer before moving on).
3. Next introduce the word "Annotate"; question the students about whether
they've heard of this word or not and if they know what it means.
4. On the "Using Annotation" slide, simply explain and summarize information
on the slide. Inform the students on how to use annotation. Pass out the
"Making Annotations: User Guide" handout.
5. Briefly talk about the different tools used in poetry and that these are
important things for the students to remember or look for while annotating.
6. Briefly show the annotation examples so that students can see that messy is
good. Go into brief detail on the Emily Dickinson poem, describing the line
highlighted + the annotation.
7. For the next slide, introduce the poet and the poem! The only information
needed is on the slide but expounding on the poet or poem is encouraged too.
Pass out the poem. Tell students to read through, put up the slide with the
graphic for annotating.
8. After about 10 minutes, ask (about 3) students if they'd like to share some of
the connections they made.
9. Have students answer the last three questions on the back of their papers,
then collect the papers:
-What did you get out of writing annotations?
-What did you learn about the text that you didn't see before?
Arnold 11

-How might this make you a better reader?

(this is checking for understanding).
10.For the bonus slide, simply ask if they know the answer to either questions.
-What poem includes the quote “April is the cruelest month” as their first line?
-Who wrote this poem?
(T.S. Eliot is the poet & The Waste Land is the poem)
