Answer all the questions

1. A force of magnitude 750 N is directed along AB where A(0.8,0,1.2) and

B is (1.4, 1.2, 0) . Write the vector form of the force. (2 ½ Marks)
F vector = mag of F * unit vector(λ)
F vector = (X2-X1)i+(Y2-Y1)j+(Z2-Z1)k = 0.6i+1.2j-1.2k
(λ) = F vector/mag of F = .6i+1.2j-1.2k/1.8
Fvector = 750*(.6i+1.2j-1.2k/1.8) = 250i+500j-500k

2. Two forces F1 = (-2i+3.3j-2.9k) N and (-i+5.2j-2.9k) N are concurrent at the point

(2,2,-5) m. Find the magnitude of the resultant these forces and the angle it makes with
positive x axis. (2 ½ Marks)

R = F1 + F2 = -3i+8.5j-5.8k
Mag of R = sqrt(32+8.52+5.82) = 10.718
θx = cos-1(Rx/mag of R) = 106.150
θy = cos-1(Ry/mag of R) = 37.520
θz = cos-1(Rz/mag of R) = 122.760

3. Determine the centroid of area shown in fig. below

12 cm
6 cm

12 cm

A1 = rect = 12 *6 = 72 cm2; A2 = triangle = 0.5*12*6=36 cm2; A3 = semicircle= 0.5 *π*62 = 56.54

A1 + A2 + A3 = 164.54 cm2

X1 =6 cm X2 = 8 cm (12-12/3) X3 = 14.55 cm
Y1 =3 cm Y2 = 8 cm Y3 = 6 cm
Xbar = (432+288+822.65)/164.54 = 9.372 cm Ybar = (216+288+339.24)/164.54 = 5.12

4. Four forces 32 kN, 24 kN, 24 kN and 120 kN are concurrent at origin and are
respectively directed through the points whose coordinates are A(2,1,6) B(4,-2,5) and
C(-3,-2,1) and D (5,1,-2). Determine the resultant of the system. (10 marks)
R = 115.288 kN

θx = cos-1(Rx/mag of R) = 6.280
θy = cos-1(Ry/mag of R) = 86.540
θz = cos-1(Rz/mag of R) = 84.790
