1. NSMU – what is it?

.1. International Faculty of General Practitioners

International Faculty of General Practitioners or in short International Faculty is the faculty,

where the majority of the international students study. At least they all start their medical studies
at this faculty. Later on it’s possible to continue at other faculties, according to student’s own
plans, study success, and level of Russian knowledge. The Faculty takes care of important
official matters, like visa formalities, registration, study plans, and helps with practicalities.
Rooms 1135 and1137. Open Mon – Thu 9:00 – 16:45, Fri 9:00 – 16:30. Lunch break at 12:30 –
13:00. Dean’s office hours: 14 – 16.

The education the NSMU offers is equivalent by international standards, so the Diplomas of the
Northern State Medical University are recognized all over the world. The University is
recognized by WHO (World Health Organization), ECFMG (USA), Medical Council of India (as
per MCI Rules). NSMU is member of AMSE (Association of Medical Schools of Europe). After
passing degree from NSMU students are eligible for USMLE (USA) or PLUB (UK) Exams. All
our graduates apply their knowledge and skills acquired at the University in the field of
healthcare. All the NSMU graduates pass different certification exams when applying for jobs at
clinical establishments of any country of the world.

Before entering the university, students complete the course of Russian and special subjects at
the Preparatory Department. During this first year foreign students start also practical lessons in
medicine. Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry, Anatomy, Latin and also Sports are included to the
study plan. (Lectures are hold in the university or in lecture hall in the place called
“Morfokorpus”, which is located at one of the city policlinics, address ave. Lomonosova 292).
From 1992 till 2007, more than 300 persons have graduated from the Preparatory Department.
95% of its graduates have entered the NSMU. English Medium is also available: in autumn term
2006 the first international group started their studies in English.

Student of the International Faculty get the education in general medicine. In their last year they
choose their specialization, which can be in the field of surgery, pediatrics, or other
specializations.

The period of studies at the International Faculty of General Practitioners is 6 years. On

graduation students get the qualification of “General Practitioner”. It is necessary to study 41
subjects, to take 32 examinations and 34 tests. To become a specialist, one has to go through the
initial one-year specialization in internship or 2-year advanced training at the Faculty of
Postgraduate Education at the NSMU. After that it’s possible to work in the professional line
they choose: as surgeons, therapists, obstetrician-gynecologists, pathoanatomists,
neuropathologists, psychiatrics, otorhinolaryngologists, or to become a manager in the public
health system.

Traditionally Russian teaching system in medicine has been highly estimated and to this
reputation has affected the strong connection of the theory and practice. Students got practical
experience during their study years in many of the city hospitals and policlinics, where the
student training is arranged. University buildings and clinics are provided with up-to-date
equipment: computer tomographs, films, angiographs, laser and ultrasonic units, endoscopy
equipment, equipment for radiological diagnostics and hyberbasic oxygenation. There are
genetic, immune, biochemical and clinical laboratories. These laboratories and equipment help to

3
train specialists of different professional lines to meet the needs of the health care systems. Since
1993 cardiac surgeries have been conducted using the apparatus of artificial blood circulation.

The foreign students who have had an opportunity to compare the level of teaching, conditions
of training and housing at the NSMU are on a high level compared to other Russian institutions
of higher education. Also the low level of criminality attracts students to choose northern city to
their study place. Foreign students will meet friendly teachers, students and citizens in
Arkhangelsk

.2. International Office

International Office (rooms 2231–2234) handles projects concerning professional contacts with
foreign partners. The university has exchange programs for students with the universities and
institutes of higher education in other European countries and in Northern America:

1) University of Tromso (Norway)

2) Umea University (Sweden)
3) University of Oslo (Norway
4) University of Oulu (Finland)
5) Catholic University of Lublin (Poland)
6) Medical Institute of Polytechnic University in Rovaniemi (Finland)
7) Institute of Health Сare, Research and Development in Copenhagen (Denmark)
8) Non-Governmental Childrens Fund “Rädda Barnen” (Sweden)
9) Higher School in Kiel, University of Applied Sciences (Germany)
10) Maine Medical Center (USA)

In general, for students the exchange programs come actual when they are at their 4th – 6th course.
And, on the other hand, the NSMU receives exchange students from partnership universities.
Exchange period can vary from few weeks to whole semester. From its side, the NSMU keeps up
the contacts especially with other institutions in Barents Sea region, which traditionally has been
important area for Arkhangelsk region.

To reach students who are interested in medical studies, there is representative film about the
university available in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. Most of the foreign students
coming to study at the NSMU have come through an agency in their own home country, which
have contacts with the university. This way the university can deliver accurate information to
different countries. For now there are partnership contracts with companies in Peru, Nigeria and
India, and in the future plans belong to open representative offices in China, Mongolia, Tunis,
Angola and Zambia.

.3. Department of Russian Language for Foreigners

In address Troitsky ave. 51, in 5th floor, is located the Department of Russian Language for
Foreigners. When you start your studies in the NSMU, you will study practically in this place
during your whole first year (Preparatory course - подготовительный курс). After this you’ll
apply and enter to the International Faculty and have courses together with Russian students.
According to study plan, studies in Russian Language last up to 4 th year course. The amount of
Russian studies varies in different year course:
280 hours lessons in 1st year course,

4
210 hours in 2nd year,
110 hours in 3rd year and
60 hours in 4th year. The result of the exam in Russian taken in the 4th year will be written to your
diploma.

Actually, Russian language is one of the most spoken languages in the whole world:
approximately 167 million people have it as native language, but just in Russia this is the only
official language. Russian belongs to Slavic language group, which is one branch of Indo-
European languages. Studying Russian Language is not only Grammar and Phonetics, but also
learning about Russian Culture and Society. The department organizes actively programme for
foreign students, so that they could easier adapt themselves to the new country. During the
academic year you will participate in excursions around Arkhangelsk region, visit cultural
organizations and schools, and have programme together with Russian students. Foreign students
have possibility to keep presentations of their own countries and cultures and this way make they
own country more familiar to the Arkhangelsk citizens.

Because you will spend most of your time in this department in the beginning of your studies,
the staff is focused on in tutoring as well. This means, that if you have some questions or
problems in adaptation in every day life in Arkhangelsk, you can ask for help from the staff. The
teachers have experience of many years in teaching foreign students.

Intensive and “tailor-maid” courses of the Russian language allow foreign students to learn the
program of the International Faculty within the relatively short period of time in case a student
cannot start his/her studies in time for some reason. There are library in the Department of
Foreign Languages, modern study books and material for studying Russian language. When the
studies of the preparatory courses of the first year are over, students take examinations. They can
be admitted to the 1st course of the university after they pass the required examinations (russian
language, biology, chemistry and math)

.4. Academic Year and Academic Culture

The academic year is divided into two terms. Normally, the autumn term begins on the 1 st of
September and lasts until mid-January. There is Christmas and New Year Holiday in the end of
December and the beginning of January. Autumn semester ends to examination session: in every
year course, you will have in February examination session, lasting approximately one week.
Right after this there is winter holiday which accurate dates also depend on your year of studies.
They may also be few tests or exams during the semester.

Spring term starts in the first half of February and lasts until the first half of June, without any
big breaks, except Russian national holidays, when there are no classes scheduled. Spring
semester, as autumn semester, ends to examination session. Summer holiday lasts 6 weeks in
July-August.

In the very beginning of your studies you will get a student card. About this takes care the
department for student’s documentation (room number 1124). With this card you will get
discount when visiting museums or other cultural attractions, like theatres. Preserve this card
carefully through your whole studies – every year in your card will be put markings which show
which class you are attending.

When studying at the International Faculty of General Practitioners, your fellow students will
mostly be foreigners. But you will attend on courses where you study also with Russian students.

5
Russian students are approximately at the age of 17 when they start their studies in university,
and at the age of 22 – 23 they already can finish their studies in the university. Attending to the
same classes is of course first of all interesting and exciting but also for great help: certain kind
of solidarity and helpfulness towards other colleague students may be for great help for foreign
students still stumbling with the language.

There are many types of teaching at the university, which may vary from large-scale lectures to
individual tutorials, with several other types in between. The amount of classroom time also
varies greatly from subject to subject. But individual work is the most important aspect of all
courses. Lectures of the classic form of academy teaching take place in large groups, sometimes
comprising hundreds of students. Lectures in general and theoretical topics help to structure the
courses and to describe to students the central aspects of the subject, present-day problems of its
specific areas, etc.

Classes are probably the most common type of teaching today, to a large extent having replaced
lectures. Classes are held for groups of approximately ten to twelve students, and for lessons in
practical subjects this is ideal group size. Laboratory classes are becoming increasingly common,
especially in natural sciences and technology. In a class students work alone or in small groups
on an experimental assignment and then generally submit a written report of the results.

Seminars are a type of teaching largely dependent on active student participation. Seminars are
held, for example, to go through project work. Group work is also quite common in some subject
areas. Student groups work independently on an assignment, but generally have access to a
teacher for guidance. Reports on group work may be either written or oral.

Tutorials are given to individual students or small groups. At a tutorial the teacher in charge of a
course helps to prepare the students for their oral presentations or reports, to plan their term
papers, essays, etc.

Each course and it sub-courses are normally concluded with a written or oral examination. An
examination may, however, take the form of an independent assignment such as a written report
or essay. Usually, the marks for examinations are excellent, good (fair), satisfactory or
unsatisfactory. A student who fell examination has the right to sit the retest.

There is chosen in every student class head of the group, to whom teachers or staff can take
contact, if it’s needed to inform actual news or changes to the whole group. There is also
regularly (once in a month) held meeting session, where practical or study issues can be
discussed.

All your grades will be written in your personal study book, which is kept in the dean’s office of
the International Faculty. You can ask about this from the secretary of the International Faculty.

“Academic freedom” is a concept not widely known or accepted in Russian institutions of higher
education. Your teachers have certain authority and your study program is set and planned by the
university. Every student of the certain year course at the certain faculty or department has the
same program. The advantage of this type of studying is, that you don’t need to worry weather
you have chosen right courses or not, and you will have clear timetable. Thanks to small study
groups, the teaching can be effective and you get to know your teachers and vice versa: teachers
can advice their students personally and give individual guidance when they know in which level
their students are or what kind of problems their may have with their studies or other topics.

6
Note that if there is in the schedule marked that lesson or lecture starts at 9 a.m., it means that
you really should be there on time, latest at 9 o’clock. You should have always acceptable reason
if you cannot attend to lessons. In the case of illness you should get the doctor’s certificate for it.
Keep also in mind that if you haven’t attended the lessons, you won’t have possibility to take the
exam and thus, get the markings of that course.

The university has its own magazine, “Medik-Severa”, which is published every month during
the academic year. It focuses on informing and telling about the happenings in the university, so
students and student life is the one important issue and source of material for the magazine.
Students can themselves send their articles or short stories to the magazine. “Ekologija
Cheloveka” is a scientific journal, published 12 times a year. There is the university publication
center, which publishes books, dissertations and researches.

Traditionally opening of the academic year is festive occasion. There are other traditions as well,
e.g. the International Faculty organizes with its students every year party to celebrate “the Day of
Faculty”.

.6. Student Union & Student Club

Membership of the Student Union in the NSMU is voluntary, but the membership is very
popular: approximately 96% of the students are members of the student union. Russian students,
who get financial support from the state and don’t pay for their studies (because of their Russian
citizenship), pay regularly a member fee. If foreign student is interested of the membership,
should pay every year x rubles to the Student Union. Then she/he will get the same benefits as
Russian students.

1
Student Union offers help and activities in different fields. One branch of the Student Union is
Sport club, whose services members of the Student Union can use. Members get tickets to
movies on a lower price. Further, every year excursions both in Russia and in foreign countries
are organized. These trips cost for student-members about 50% less than normally. And at last,
but not least, Student Union offers service, which is very important for the students finishing
their studies and planning their future careers. Student Union is specialized in career service: if
you wish to get information how to find work, you can ask for help in Student Union. They have
practical tips where to start looking for a job, how to form one’s resume correctly or how to
prepare oneself for interview. Generally, Student Union is working for the students. It supervises
student’s socio-economical rights and benefits, and makes it’s emphasize on students’ living
conditions, employment market and salary.

Student Club focuses on students’ social life outside academic sphere. Student-members organize
free time activities, like parties and different kind of occasions, e.g. “Knighting of students”,
“Spring of Dance”, song contests and spectacles. There is dance group as well as students’
amateur theatre. The theatre staff often goes on to different cities in Russia.

.9. Orient yourself into University

University consists of two buildings. The older one is built already before the Revolution and the
newer part in the 1980s. In the main, older part of the university there are located auditoriums,
lecture halls, sport halls, policlinic, laboratories, and studies of the staff, as well as bank, book
shop, cafeteria and lunch restaurant. Between the old and new buildings, in the 3 rd floor, is
located the scientific library. There are also Institute of Information Technology and
humanitarian departments in this annexation. In the new annex is situated the Faculty of Medical
Psychology and the Dental Faculty, and staff’s study rooms, like International office, as well as
rector’s office.

The system of the room numbers: room number 1234 tells that it is located in the university’s
older part (1), in second floor (2). Last numbers mean the precise room. If the last reading is
even or odd, it counters just on which side of corridor the room is. Room number 2345 tells that
the location is in the newer part of the university, in third floor.

In cabinets 1107 – 1109 there is doctor’s office for students of the NSMU. In cabinet 1103
students can enroll to psychological consultation. For foreign students the appointment to doctor
costs 120 rubles (consultation and receiving doctor’s certificate).

In cabinet 1104 is Drug store, open on Mon – Fri at 10–17.

Students usually have their meals at the lunch restaurant at the university. In hall 1100 is lunch
restaurant and canteen, open on Mon – Fri at 9–16. Closed during the weekends. There is also
small kiosk in the main hall.

You get to know many of the city policlinics and hospitals during your studies. The practical
studies in hospitals start in the second year at the university. The first hospital you will have
courses during your preparatory year is located in Regional Clinical Hospital in address pr.
Lomonosova 292, in “Morfokorpus”.

same block there can be students of opposite gender as neighbors. In the student dormitory no. 1
there are common kitchens and laundries, and there are arranged common room in the first and
third dormitories. Kitchen ware you should get yourself, and if you have your own computer,
also Internet connection you will pay yourself.

The distance from the student dormitory no. 1 (in address Vologodskaya, 7) is about fifteen
minutes walk (about 1,5 km) from the university. Student dormitories number 2 (Ulitsa Timme,
27) and 3 (Ulitsa Samoila, 9) are located a bit further, about 3–3,5 kilometers from the city center
and the university.

.2. Instructions and Rules

.2. Health Care, Vaccination and Insurance

It’s highly recommended that before coming to Russia you have been vaccinated, at least against
tetanus and hepatit. For many foreigners new type of food can cause troubles at the beginning,
since one’s body system is used to certain kind of diet. Careful tidiness can diminish harmful
symptoms. Do not drink tap water, it is not drinkable. The most secure way is to buy bottled
water, but in cases where this isn’t possible, water should be at least carefully boiled.

For students of the NSMU there are health care services in the university policlinic.

To get visa to the Russian Federation, one has to have travel insurance. Read carefully special
terms of your insurance company and what kind of health care or injuries it compensates and for
how long time.

In the university you can make the medical insurance, which costs $150-250 per year. It includes
polyclinic and dental assistance.

4. About Arkhangelsk

.1. Location and Transportation

The distance from Moscow to Arkhangelsk is 1258 km and from Saint Petersburg 1147 km. By
plane it takes less than two hours to get to “the capital of Northern Russia”. Central bureau for
air service is in address Voskresenskaya 116. Aeroflot-Nord is flying from and to Arkhangelsk,
its ticket office is in address Pomorskaya 7. International airport is located to near to
Arkhangelsk city, in Talagi, in twenty minutes driving from the city. You can get there by bus
number 12. In Moscow the domestic airport is Domodedovo, in St. Petersburg Pulkova 2.

To get in Arkhangelsk by train, it takes about 21 hours from Moscow and 24 hours from Saint
Petersburg. From Moscow the trains leave from the Yaroslavskij station, and from St. Petersburg
from Ladozhskij station. Railway station (address: 60-let Oktyabrya) square and Central bus
station 23 (Gvardeysky division, 13) are near to each other and are located on the other end of
Voskresenskaya Street.

It’s easy to find your way in Arkhangelsk, thanks to its clear city plan. Besides, distances are not
too long. For example, the length of the Voskresenskaya Street, which is one of the city’s main
streets, is about three kilometers of length. Troitsky Street is the other main street. There are both
towns and commercial busses, and trolleybuses. Yellow pick-up cars are collective taxis (or more
often “gazelle”), which have their certain routes: you hop in, pay your trip and ask chauffer to
drop you the certain stop place on the way. Municipal busses are a bit cheaper ones than private
transport alternatives. There are not anymore trams, which used to be the most northern ones in
the world. But anyway, the abovementioned transport variants are going quite often, most of
them in 5–15 minutes, so you won’t need to wait for your bus long time.

In book stores (e.g. the biggest book store Dom Knigi is located right in the centre, behind the
high/big office building, landmark of the whole city) or Tourist Information Center you can by
map over Arkhangelsk. There are no timetables yet of town transport net.
It’s handy to know certain elementary bus routes. Busses 77, 76 and 75 are going around the city,
they go along Troitsky and they stop nearby every student hostel.
Bus number 54 is going from bus and railway station, along Voskresenskaya and Troitsky until
the sea and river port.
If you need to get from the university to the department of Russian language, you can take
basically what ever bus going along the Troitsky. When heading “Morfokorpus” you can reach
there by bus number 12, or then use busses 77, 76 or 75 until Gagarina street to get nearby the
hospital area.

Public transportation starts to work around 5:00 – 7:00 o’clock in the morning and last shifts are
going around 22:00 – 24:00 in the evening, depending on the line. For more detailed
information, check the appendix.

Be careful when walking in the streets and crossing the roads! It’s unfortunately too common,
that car chauffeurs drive too fast, don’t keep driving lights on and don’t pay attention to
pedestrians: although traffic lights would be lightning green for you, make still once more sure,
that it’s absolutely safe to cross the road. During the dark time of the day it’s better to walk those
routes you already know (this is because there might by sometimes open drains on the roads).

2
Ordering a taxi and traveling inside the city area costs 50 rubles. But taxi’s waiting for
passengers straight in the railway station cost twice as much. Taxi you can order in numbers
below:

24-10-10,
21-92-19,
62-00-00,
62-55-55,
27-00-00,
27-70-07,

8-921-246-10-00.

.2. Climate

Because of the northern location, winter time lasts long, is snowy and cold. Summer time is mild
and sunny. The White Sea about 40 kilometers from Arkhangelsk makes the climate windy and
humid and it rains often. The weather can change relatively quickly. Get prepared for winter time
carefully. This means warm underwear, woolen clothes and good outer clothing, like warm
jacket, boots and headgear. Because of the near location to the White Sea, it is often windy.
Especially during the autumn season it rains a lot.

On average, the temperature in Arkhangelsk in January is -13 Celsius degrees and in July +17
Celsius degrees. But note, that these figures informs just the average temperatures; in winter time
(December – March) there can be as cold as -30 Celsius degrees. And in the summer time (June
– August) as warm as +25 Celsius degrees. And mean time – everything between or beyond these
temperatures! First snow usually rains in October, but usually it won’t last long time at once.

.3. Tourist Attractions

Arkhangelsk is one of the oldest Russian cities. It was founded in 1584 on the bank of the
Northern Dvina not far from the place where it flows into the White Sea. The importance of the
city has been remarkable: before the foundation of St. Petersburg Arkhangelsk was the only
“window” to Europe and the only seaport. The river Northern Dvina has been and still is very
important to the city. Surrounding river gives beautiful background to the city, it functions as an
important transportation route both of goods and passengers. Around the city and along the river
there is vast wetland area.

Nowadays Arkhangelsk is on of the largest scientific and cultural centers in the European North.
There are three universities: Pomor State University, Technical University, and Medical
University, and other institutions of education and research. There is International School of
Administration and College of Art and Music.

long traditions. These traditions and history you can get to know in different cultural institutions,
many monasteries of the region, as well as in different kind of museums.

region.

2
The city of Arkhangelsk is today rapidly growing and developing regional center. You can notice
this when walking around the streets: new buildings for business and shopping centers are built
all the time. Traditional and quite exceptional wooden architecture is reserved in well-
known/famous and open air museum Malye Karely, where you can find centuries old wooden
churches, houses and storages. But traditions and history are vivid part of the town picture of
Arkhangelsk. There are reserved and reconstructed wooden houses from 19 th and the beginning
of 20th century. Cozy houses are painted in Russian style using different colors and decorated
with woodcarvings. Next to these buildings are typical houses and buildings from the soviet era,
so the result is quite fascinating combination of old and new.

Arkhangelsk boasts woodcarving, bone-carwing, decorative painting on wood, birch-bark

processing, pattern weaving and embroidery, making clay toys and other folk handicrafts passed
on from generation to generation.

Location by the river North Dvina gives to the city special frames. The sea is
Historically soviet era is not so far from the today life in Russia. You can notice this in different
situations of smaller of bigger aspects. For example in measuring time you’ll here saying before
revolution. On the wide main square of the city you’ll find the youngest statue of V. I. Lenin in
the whole Russia.

located by the Severnaya Dvina outside the city. In the region there are military areas, where
there is restricted entrance to the foreigners. Other smaller or bigger towns in the region are
Severodvinsk, Novodvinsk, Kotlas,and Kargopol.

In Russian kitchen there are influences from surrounding nations and cultures. There are some
aspects taken from traditions from Ukraine, Caucasus region and Eastern part of Asia. Use of
meat, milk products and certain vegetables is elementary part of the diet. Smetana, creamy and
sour milk product, you can use practically with everything. Fat is not so strictly avoided. One
typical and delicious dish is pies with different fillings from of berries, fish, meat or vegetables.
And, of course, sea products are elementary part of Arkhangelsk menu. Different kind of dark
rye bread are elementary food of Russians’ nourishment.

The name Arkhangelsk comes from the saint. In the emblem of the city there are illustrated Saint
Archangel Michael.
Arkhangelsk has affected to the symbol of the whole Russia: the colors and the form of the
national flag are taken from the model Dutch sailors used in their ships when doing commercial
trips to Arkhangelsk.

public holidays post offices, banks, administrative and authority are closed.

The only officially valuable currency in Russia is ruble (RUB). To get the idea of the valuable of
the currency, you can check the current rate e.g. in the address of the Central Bank of Russia:
http://www.cbr.ru/eng/

the image of possible living costs.

2

(8182). If calling from other regions in Russia, region code should be chosen at first and then the
particular number you wish to contact.
Using mobile phone requires always the all codes. Inside Russia and using Russian number it is
possible to dial code 8 instead of country code (+7).

Important numbers below function in the whole country:

5. Russian Way of Life

.1. Holidays

If you have opportunity to attend Russian celebration – don’t miss it! In Russian company you
won’t have silent or boring moments. Toasts are one important part of the party, and only the
imagination can limit the topics of the speech – you can positively surprise your host by having a
speech of your own. In Russia are holidays and festive days for different reasons – non-formal
family anniversary, official state festivals or religious commemorations, festivities of different
groups, etc.

Public holidays in Russia are:

01.01.–05.01. New Year holiday. New Year is the most important festive in Russia, and it is
celebrated not just in New Years Eve, but on the next days as well. There will be a decorative
spruce on the central place of every city, town and village. The Russian counterpart for Santa
Claus, “Grandfather Frost” and come to visit and gives presents to children. Note that in the
university New Year holiday lasts until 10.01.
07.01. Christmas. Christmas is celebrated among family members and there are held ceremonies
in the churches.
23.02. Day of Defenders’ of Fatherland. This “Men’s Day” is kind of equivalent to Women’s day.
08.03. International Women’s Day. On this day husbands, sons and boyfriends congratulate their
important women in their life: wives, mothers, mothers-in-law, grandmothers, sisters and
girlfriends. Also male colleagues congratulate their female co-workers at the work.
01.05. Mayday. This festive doesn’t have anymore the same kind of strong political meaning as
it used to be – and parades have turn to be smaller and smaller. Today it seems to be a day-off,
when to start the season in the own summer cottage.
09.05. Day of Victory. This day is very important for Russians, since on this day, in 1945, ended
the Second World War, which required great efforts and sacrifices from Soviet side. On this day
Russians remember the veterans and contemporaries of the Great Patriotic War.
12.06. National Day. In 12.6.1991 was declared the foundation of the Russian Federation.

2
04.11. Day of National Unity. This official day-off in Russian calendar is the newest one,
although the roots of this day are already from the 17 th century: in 1612 ended so called Time of
Troubles and the basis for coming Russian state was settled.

If the weekday of above mentioned days happens to be during the weekend, the next Monday is
official day-off. This way Russians won’t miss any free days!

Besides these public holidays, which are official free days, there are plenty of other important
festive days, for example special days, when there are celebrated workers in different
professions. For us, the important days to remember are:
“Day of Medicine Workers”: 3rd Sunday in June.
“Day of Psychologist” is celebrated also annually.
“International Day of Nurses”: 12.5.

12.12. Day of Constitution. In 12.12.1993 was taken in to use the new Constitution of Russian
Federation. This is not anymore official day-off, as it used to be.

Every Russian town got its own day, when is celebrated its foundation. Arkhangelsk was
founded already in 1584. Day of Arkhangelsk is on 25 of June. People gather outside to walk and
see fireworks. Other remarkable day in the towns’ events calendar is the day of Navy, celebrated
on 30th of June.

There are no official Easter holidays. Easter time varies every year, but is usually held in April or
in the beginning of May. In Russia Orthodox church has the most important position among
Christian churches, and for orthodox believers the Easter is the most important festive of the
whole year. Other important religious festival is Shrovetide when, forty days before the Easter
and on the eve of great fast, there are held different kind of festivities for the people. In minority,
there are also Armenian, Catholic and Protestant churches. Other world’s major religions, like
Islam, Jewish religion and Buddhism are likewise presented in Russia. These religions
traditionally have stronger influence in the southern and eastern part of the country.

There is one peculiar aspect in the time calculation: nowadays the official calendar is so called
Gregorian calendar, but in tsarist Russia was so called Julian calendar in the use. The dates in
Julian calendar are two weeks later than in Gregorian calendar, which was taken in to use in
Soviet Russia soon after the revolution. Orthodox Church, though, didn’t change the calendar, so
religious events are still held according the Julian calendar. This is also why the Great October
Revolution was celebrated in 7th of November, and not in October, as one could estimate. This
also explains why you can hear mentions about “old” and “new” Christmas or “old” and “new”
New Year.

Important holidays of your own country may differ from the days and holidays of Russians.
International students represent many different cultures and religious, and, understandably, the
staff in the university doesn’t know all the different festive. But still, if you have an important
festive or national holiday coming and you wish to have day-off, please let the staff know the
reason. From the side of the university there is aim to handle these kind of things flexible.

.2. Russians about Foreigners, Foreigners about Russians

2
If you don’t know something or are unsure about something, do not hesitate to ask! Besides,
Russians themselves are talkative and like to ask from other people for example the right way.
Or, stopping a stranger in the street for asking just time is also quite common.

It’s important not just for your studies, but also for your adaptation in Russia to learn Russian
language. Nowadays there are English speakers all the time more and more, but in general young
people are ready to use foreign language. So, get ready to handle all your things in Russian.
Practically everything is in Russian, and information in English (or in other languages) is quite
hard to find.

But when Russians hear foreigners talking in Russian, they surely comment this in polite way
and are impressed, if you can use their language – no matter what the level of your Russian
knowledge is. And, naturally, it’s easier to create friendships when you have a common language.
This example tells also about the politeness of the Russians. Besides, they are helpful and
friendly, and this kind of notion one can make especially in Arkhangelsk, where the busy and
hectic lifestyle of big metropolitans hasn’t affected to the people’s attitude towards other people.
Unfortunately, racism is a problem in Russia, which causes everyday problems especially in the
biggest Russian cities, and this should be taken into account when traveling in e.g. St. Petersburg
or Moscow. In Arkhangelsk the situation for foreigners is much easier.

You will notice straightforward Russian behavior in a local bus during the rush hour: if you
cannot give your money to the conductor because of the crowd, it’s handier to give the money to
the person next to you or who is most near the conductor. In general, Russians are open-minded
people who like to chat with others. To this belongs also that they may quite straight make
comments, ask questions or start a conversation with you. To Russian politeness belongs open
concern about other’s well being, so you probably will hear advice concerning different aspects
of life.

Russians use often their patronymic. Using person’s first name and his/her patronymic is a polite
way, and when talking about or with some of your teachers, remember to use this form. Strangers
you naturally address formally, and this is common in every age group, even among young
people.

The NSMU tries to do it’s best to make you feel like home here in Arkhangelsk – and in Russia
as a whole. Sometimes there may be some amazing and strange things to understand in Russian
way of life, but there are many attractive and interesting aspects in Russian culture and life.

3
.2. What to do during the first days

First days in Arkhangelsk after your arrival are important and exciting – but also sometimes a bit
difficult ones: you’ll have plenty of things to do and to remember. This chapter is to help you
focusing on dealing with practical things and to understand what you should do at first.

1) Contact the International Faculty or the International Office. Before your arrival you’ll be in
touch with the university. If you have got the study place through your agency, make sure that on
your behalf there has been informed exact time of your arrival. Remember to take and keep with
you the address and telephone numbers of the university, just in case. If you travel alone, there
will be contact person in Moscow to help you to get in airplane or train to Arkhangelsk.

2) The more information you get for yourself about the country you are heading at, the better for
you. Inform your consulate in Russia that you are arriving. You might also get extra information
on their behalf, if you ask. It is advisable to get cash in rubles for the first days in Russia before
you arrive to the country, so the first thing to think about is not how and where to change money.
Still in your home country, make photocopies of your passport and visa and other documents,
just for yourself.

3) When you have arrived to Arkhangelsk, the representative (usually from the International
Faculty) will meet you in the airport or at the train station and takes you to your dormitory. Give
your personal data to administrative of the university right after your arrival to Arkhangelsk.

4) Registration. According to laws of Russian Federation, foreigners traveling to Russia should

do registration within three working days (Saturdays and Sundays do not count) after arrival to
the destination place. For this, give your passport and immigration card to the staff in the
International Faculty. If you don’t already have a copy of your passport and visa, ask to get one.

5) You should have all the required documents with you. These original documents (Certificate
from the secondary school and HIV-certificate) you give to the staff in International Faculty.
According to the Federal Law, every foreign citizen, staying permanent in Russia more than
three months, has to have a medical certificate confirming no HIV-infection. This certificate
shouldn’t be more than 1 months old.

6) Accommodation. Sign in to one of the student dormitories. You will get your agreement in two
pieces, in English and in Russian, as the university also will have. In the agreement there are
instructions and terms of payment and information about dormitory rules.

7) Sign the contract where you agree to participate to the payment-basis university studies. Read
the document carefully and make sure you understand all the articles in the agreement. If you
don’t understand all, ask. In this agreement is detailed information about costs and the dates
when and how to pay. You should pay for the first one year at once. You will get your examples
in English and in Russian, as the university on its behalf. In the agreement is also explained other
obligations and rights of the parties, for the student’s part, and the university’s.

8) For different documents (student card, study book, visa etc.) are needed plenty of
photographs. Altogether 11, size 3,5 x 4,5cm. Photographs need to be black-and-white, and no
glossy ones! (In case you don’t have proper photos, there is a photography studio in the
university area, entrance from the main yard of the university.)

3
9) Attend to the courses. If you don’t know the right place or where to go, ask in the International
Faculty. They have the time tables of every year course. At first you will start first Russian
studies in the Department of Russian language for foreigners.

10) Formulation of new visa for multiply entries takes approximately ten days.

11) You can get Russian mobile number when you got the registration to Arkhangelsk.
Remember to inform your telephone number to the International Faculty.

12) Get your own map over Arkhangelsk! It’s much easier to orientate in the city when you know
addresses. Although you can always ask for help from other students the staff, they won’t be
there necessarily every time to take you personally to new places. Note that you’ll have lectures
not only in the university, but around the city hospitals and policlinics. Prepare yourself to cope
independently!

.3. Problematic Situations

Of course we do hope that everything goes without problems, and your arrival and staying goes
as easy as possible. But you never know what can happen, and sudden situations may be more
problematic when you are in the new environment. This chapter is to give first hand help if
something happens. It is highly recommendable to read this through beforehand – just in case.

1) If you get stolen

2) If your documents get lost
3) If you are out of money
4) In the case of accident
5) If you have problems with your neighbor
6) If you are stuck with your studies
7) If you have mental problems
8) If you need urgently get back to your home country

1) In the case that you notice your purchase, mobile or something else important is stolen, you
should take contact with the police in number: 02. Depending on your insurance, it may be
possible to get compensation. For this is needed official document: passport or student card.

2) If you lost your identification documents (passport, visa, registration), let the international
faculty know about this immediately. The authorities (the police) may ask your documents, so
that’s why you should carry your visa and registration with you. It is highly recommendable, that
you take some copies of your documents, so that you will in any case be one version of your
documents to show. In the case of lost of your passport, take contact to your country’s consulate.
The personnel of your consulate will help and inform you how to get new passport.

3) In the case you cannot pay for the hostel, studies and living you should inform about this in
the International Faculty. The sooner you discuss the problem, the better. The staff is willing to
reorganize your payment program, but it doesn’t mean that you can forget the whole debt. And
note, that new payment schedule inquire real and acceptable reason.

4) The general ambulance number is 03. When you need to use the services of Russian
policlinics or hospitals, you should pay, weather they are municipal or private hospitals. This is
one reason why insurance is asked before getting visa. Municipal health care institutes are

3
cheaper than private ones. Remember to contact the International Faculty as well, or if you
cannot do that ask the hospital staff or your friend to do that.

5) Sometimes living with an other student and sharing limited area and time with new neighbor
can cause problematic situations. To avoid or diminish problematic situations you should in the
first hand agree together about your own common rules in your room and block (e.g. about
cleaning turns, using of own or other’s things) Conflicts can arouse from small things, when
different people are living long time together. It’s better to try to solve the problem first together,
but if it doesn’t help, you can ask for alteration in the office of student dormitory. The head of the
dormitory may try to change roommates.

6) Studying in some other language than your own mother tongue requires more self-discipline
and time than it would in your own mother language. But how difficult it sometimes may seem,
it’s still fully possible. Keep in mind, especially in the frustrating moments, that you will learn
not only the medicine but also Russian language at the same time – and learning new language
and culture is always useful. But if you have problems in keeping up with schedules or feel
stressed, you should discuss it with your teachers and agree about new timetable.

7) Living in new and strange environment can be sometimes hard. Students in the same situation
understand each other very well. If you get stressed you can turn to your teachers if you want to
talk about your problems. Teachers working with foreign students are used to these kinds of
situations and are ready to help. It’s also possibility to turn to professional psychologists, who are
helping students in their life situations.

8) Your visa is kept in the international faculty. In the case that you should immediately get back
to your home country, contact the staff in the faculty to get the visa and to inform the reason why
you should travel.
