The 147th annual Washington County Fair

Each summer, the Washington
County Fair brings community mem-
bers together for traditional favorites,
such as fair food and carnival rides, as
well as friendly competition and the
opportunity to see something new.
From Aug. 1 to 5, Washington
County residents can expect to see
their friends and neighbors compete
for blue ribbons in a variety of live-
stock, garden, art and cooking events,
which are judged throughout the fair.
This year, there are also plenty of
new entertainers to check out, such
as a Johnny Cash tribute band, a
magician and a “Wizard of Oz”-themed
comedy act, and, as in past years, there
are a number of thrilling automotive
grandstand events throughout the fair.

When you are at the fairgrounds to
pick up your season passes, you might
as well take advantage of the deal on
carnival rides too. You can purchase 10
rides for $20 on July 30 and 31 from
9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the fair office. You
can also get the discounted ride tickets
Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., but regu-
lar gate admission will be charged that
day.
Each one of these advance tickets
is good for one ride, and you can use
them at any time during the fair, but
they cannot be used on game booths or
concessions.
Gates open at 7 a.m. and close at 10
p.m. daily, Wednesday through Satur-
day, and close at 8 p.m. on Sunday.
Buildings open daily at 10 a.m. and
close at 10 p.m. Wednesday through
Saturday, and at 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Opening Day/Senior Citizen Day —
Wednesday, Aug. 1
This year, opening day for the fair
doubles as Senior Citizen Day, and to
recognize seniors, the admission price
is $2 for those ages 65 and older if the
tickets are purchased before 1 p.m.
Although the first morning of the
fair starts bright and early with a num-
ber of livestock events, the first unique
event of the day begins at 1 p.m. with
the Senior Citizen’s Program and
Awards.
During the program, a male and
female senior will each be honored for
volunteer work done in the commu-
nity. These seniors will also have the
opportunity to compete at the Minne-
sota State Fair to be named the Minne-
sota State Outstanding Volunteer.
Bingo will follow the Senior Citizen’s
Program and will be held every after-
noon throughout the fair.
Also at 1 p.m., Church of Cash, a
Johnny Cash tribute band, takes the
stage.

Dietsche, the fair’s entertainment man-
ager.
The traditional Opening Day Parade
will begin at 6 p.m. The classic line
up of old cars, tractors and floats will
cruise the streets of the fairgrounds.
According to Dietsche, lemonade and
cookies will be available at the main
stage tent for veterans from 7 p.m. to
7:30 p.m. during a Veterans Tribute.
Then, at 7:30 p.m., the White Bear
Lake Big Band will play military ser-
vice songs.
“We’ll recognize them for their ser-
vice, and White Bear Lake Big Band
is a great band to have for that and
they’re so happy to come out and do
that,” Dietsche said.

at 10 a.m., which is sure to get kids
singing and laughing along, and Alfy’s
World of Robotics Puppets offers a
mechanical twist at 11 a.m., with its
show of puppets that are all maneu-
vered via remote control.
At 10:30 a.m. Stillwater Area Early
Childhood and Family Education is
hosting at the mainstage tent a variety
of free activities for children.
“The prizes and stuff down there
are free, and it’s just simple games,
from a sucker pull to some crafts and
things like that,” Dietsche said. “Rain
or shine, we usually do it.”
Magnificent Bubbles is another free
event that is sure to delight. Join the
fun and help fill a tent with bubbles at
11:30 a.m.
“We just hand out bubbles and we
give them all kinds of different bubble
options,” Dietsche said. “We’re trying
to have free events that are fun.”
Advanced sales on carnival rides will
be discontinued, but from Thursday
until the end of the fair, you can buy
unlimited access to all rides for only
$22. The sale begins at noon and ends
at 4 p.m. and is suspended Saturday

ZacharyZ is a new musician at the
fair this year. He will be performing
classic rock at 2 p.m.
Family Fun Day isn’t just for families
with young children, but for families
with teens too. At 8 p.m. the teen divi-
sion of the talent show will begin, and
at 8:30 p.m. Dance and Entertainment
Studios will host a dance just for teen-
agers.
“We have things like glow sticks and
hats and things that are fun novelty
items that we give to the teens. They
get to keep them, and they dance and
have fun with their friends,” Dietsche
said. “If they don’t want to hang out
with Mom and Dad, it’s a good place
to go.”
Friday, Aug. 3
At 11:30 a.m., fairgoers can test their
luck in the Heads & Tails Contest, a
large group coin flip game.
Then at noon, those who are ready
to be amazed should be sure not to
miss the Magic of Matt Dunn, a popu-
lar show new to the fair this year.
Carnival rides start up at 1 p.m.
Unlimited access for all carnival rides
will be sold for $22 from 1 to 5 p.m.,

and with the ride special you will get
one raffle ticket for an X-Box drawing,
which will take place at 5:15 p.m. To
win the X-Box, participants must be
present at the time of the drawing.
At 2 p.m., the original puppet charac-
ters of Schiffelly Puppets will provide
comic relief while teaching life lessons.
“They’ve won nine times at the
regional Emmy Awards for their pro-
grams,” Dietsche said.
Another fun activity to add to your
fair experience is a helicopter ride
around the Stillwater area. Rides, for
an additional cost, begin at 3 p.m. and
continue until dark.
For those seeking musical entertain-
ment, “Elvis” will take the stage at 3
p.m., but get your seat early because he
always packs a full house.
The open division talent show will
start at 8 p.m. Tryouts for this year’s
show have already been completed, but
if you have a talent you would like to
share next year, keep an eye on the fair
website early in summer 2019.
