TIME T O
LUK BACK
It’s been quite a season for Luka Milivojevic. He’s hit double figures for goals for the first time, helped his nation
qualify for a World Cup, undergone more managerial upheaval, been involved in all sorts of penalty shenanigans
and captained Palace to Premier League safety despite a nightmare start. With the campaign’s curtain about to
fall, he talks Jonathon Rogers through all of it.
“ and
The most important thing for me is the team,
I would easily swap my 10 goals for us
staying in the league”
16
Crystal Palace v West Bromwich Albion // Luka Milivojevic
When I sat down with Luka Milivojevic for his first programme
interview in February last year, his standout quote was: “the fans
don’t know me now, but I believe in myself”. In just 14 months, his
impact has been so great that he has made one of the division’s
biggest tongue twisters a household name. Mission accomplished.
The Serbian is the personification of the Eagles’ miraculous
transformation from relegation certainties to top-half hopefuls –
dogged, gritty, never-say-die. He leads the team out of the tunnel,
and the squad’s statistics when it comes to passes, tackles, distance
covered and, remarkably for a holding midfielder, goals.
In any other season he would have coasted to the club’s Player
of the Year award, but Wilfried Zaha’s spellbinding displays saw
Luka settle for second place. Individual glory doesn’t bother a man
whose selflessness was shown by him literally handing Christian
Benteke the chance to end his goal drought from the spot against
Leicester City, having already become only the fourth player in the
club’s history to hit double figures in a Premier League campaign.
“It’s the first time in my career I’ve scored 10 goals in a
season,” he said. “I’m happy and surprised. I understand I’ve had a
lot of penalties to take, but they are not easy to score because there
is a lot of pressure and concentration, and goalkeepers prepare for
where they think you’re going to shoot.
“The most important thing for me is the team, and I would
easily swap my 10 goals for us staying in the league. I didn’t score
alone because someone gave me the ball or was fouled, but in the
end, someone has to get on the scoresheet and it’s been me. It
doesn’t matter – we are all together.
“Staying up this season is an amazing achievement because
of how we started. If we had had all our best players available
throughout the season, then we would be in the top 10.”
That optimism was being cautiously whispered between fans,
as well as some of the squad, way back in the halcyon days of
August. Frank de Boer’s arrival promised an exciting future as he
swept away the pragmatism of Sam Allardyce for a more attractive
approach. The Dutch legend suggested his tenure would be about
‘evolution rather than revolution’. It proved to be the opposite.
After 77 days of trying to force his methods on a squad
unaccustomed to his systems - including installing an uncomfortable
Milivojevic at a centre-back - the Dutchman was replaced by Roy
Hodgson, but the damage had been done with the beleaguered
Eagles pointless after four games.
Looking back to the season’s early weeks, Milivojevic said:
“Frank had some ideas, but maybe he didn’t have to change too
much and just add his style of football into the system we used
under Big Sam. He decided to play three at the back and it didn’t
have a lot of success, and after that we know what happened.

WHAT IS THE BEST GOAL YOU’VE SCORED WHAT’S THE GREATEST GOAL YOU’VE
IN YOUR CAREER? SEEN LIVE?
I’d probably have to go for the one at West Bromwich Danny Rose’s strike for Tottenham Hotspur against Arsenal
Albion. In the last minute I ran the length of the field, so [in 2010]. I was the 19th man in the squad and on his debut,
it was a special goal in an important game. Danny struck the ball brilliantly so that was incredible.
WHAT’S THE BEST GOAL BY A PALACE WHICH GOAL DO YOU THINK IS THE
PLAYER IN YOUR TIME AT THE CLUB? GREATEST OF ALL TIME?
Pretty much everyone has said it this season, but I’d say I’d say Robin van Persie’s volley against Aston Villa just for the
Wilf’s goal against Hull last season to make it 1-1. That was technique, plus it was in the game they needed to win to clinch
a good strike. the league. That was a special goal.

Pulis. However, after sacking former Eagles bosses Pulis and Alan Pardew, Darren Moore
couldn’t quite pull off a remarkable recovery, and now Albion will have to start the
rebuilding work again. Having bounced back to the Premier League within two years of
their three previous relegations, perhaps no club is better equipped to do so.

The former Three Lions keeper has missed just one league game all season for the
Baggies, and despite their lowly league position, the veteran shot-stopper has been
in excellent form and produced many top saves to help himself to 10 clean sheets
during a disappointing campaign.
After impressing on loan from Stoke City at Wrexham, Manchester United
snapped him up in 2005 and after gaining experience at Watford he made his Red
Devils bow three years later, having already been capped by England after winning
promotion with the Hornets. He was named man of the match as United won the
2009 League Cup, something he would also achieve at Birmingham City two years
later when they beat Arsenal in the final.

Today could be the Northern Ireland international’s Albion swansong, having been
linked with a summer move because of an apparent cut-price relegation release
fee clause in his contract, which has stirred up interest around the Premier League.
It is easy to see why, as Evans is the second most decorated Northern
Irishman in his nation’s history having won nine major trophies in his career at
Manchester United, including three Premier League titles, three League Cups
and a FIFA World Club Championship. After 198 appearances for the Red Devils
over eight years, he joined Albion three seasons ago where he has been a virtual
mainstay in the heart of their defence. He has won 68 caps for his country, and
appeared at Euro 2016.

His career started at Wycombe Wanderers back in 2008 before being given a

three seasons in west London. He also won the first of 11 caps for Scotland while

The Venezuelan striker is battling it out with Jay Rodriguez to be Albion’s top scorer
this season, having achieved that feat in each of his two previous campaigns with
the Baggies since his arrival for a then-club record fee of £11 million.
His career started in his homeland aged 17 at Aragua where he scored 15
times in 49 appearances. Stints in Spain at Las Palmas and Malaga followed before
hitting 53 goals in 113 games in Russia for Rubin Kazan and Zenit, where he helped
the latter to a league and cup double in 2015 before moving to The Hawthorns. He
boasts 66 caps for his nation, scoring 19 times and appearing in three Copa America
tournaments.

Take a trip down memory lane with these retro stickers depicting some of
West Brom’s blasts from the pasts, and some faces you may have forgotten.
RETRO BADGE
Although this version didn’t appear on the Baggies’ shirts until 2000, it had
been the official club crest since at least the 1960s and depicts a throstle
sitting on a hawthorne branch. Previously a number of different designs had
appeared on the playing kit, including West Bromwich’s coat of arms and a
simple WBA motif, while the current badge was instated in 2006.

CLUB CONNECTION
Today will see Roy Hodgson take on the team for whom he oversaw 54 matches
following his appointment in February 2011. He guided the Baggies away from
relegation trouble in his first few months at the helm before improving the club
to a top-half finish the following season, which saw him headhunted for the
vacant England manager’s job.
who am I?
Can you recall the name of this defender who spent three seasons at West Brom
after a successful loan spell? He is most noted for his time at Nottingham Forest
where he won promotion to the Premier League twice and was a part of the side
that finished third in 1994/95. He would also help Albion into the top-flight in 2002
before being released a year later.
DODGY HAIRCUT
When Jonas Olsson first arrived on these shores in 2008 he did so with neatly
cropped hair. Fast-forward nine years and it seemed as though he had still to
find a hairdresser in the West Midlands, with his flowing mane requiring the
aid of a hairband to keep it from getting in his eyes when heading the ball. He
currently plies his trade in his native Sweden for Djurgardens.
KITOFF
This season, we have been looking back at some of our opponents’
best and worst kits during their history, and comparing them to what
Palace wore at the same time. You might think that the Eagles’ kits will
win every time, but impartiality will rule here as much as possible with

The Guardian’s London Football Correspondent gives his take on
recent events surrounding the beautiful game around the world.
Hakan Sukur had it all. The striker nicknamed “the Bull of the
Bosphorus” was a record scorer for Galatasaray and Turkey, and a
driving force behind the national team finishing third at the 2002
World Cup, when he registered the fastest goal at an international
tournament after 10.8 seconds.
His post-playing career took him into punditry and politics as
an MP for the ruling Justice and Development Party, with Turkey’s
president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a guest at his first wedding. And
yet now, at 46, he lives with his family in exile, running the Tuts
Bakery and Café in Palo Alto, California, hiding in plain sight with
little hope of seeing his ageing parents again. “It’s my country, and
I love my people, even though their ideas about me are distorted
by controlled media,” he said. “Maybe in the future we will go
there and visit.”
Sukur had departed Turkey in 2015 after his relationship with
Erdogan was soured by his close connections with another guest on
his wedding day, the cleric Fethullah Gulen. The former striker had
resigned from the governing party in 2013 after the president moved
to close schools run by Gulenists, and was then indicted in absentia
for insulting Erdogan on social media three years later. When the
failed coup d’etat of the summer of 2016 was blamed on Gulenists “Last Friday my father says to my son on FaceTime: ‘I miss
