FIRST WORD August 14 & 15, 2010

First Baptist Church Naples

The new Quiet Time year begins August 29.
New Quiet Time guides are on sale in the bookstore now.
PreK-Elementary are $12.00 each and Middle School-Adult
are $14.00 each. Also coming soon: online Quiet Time
guide.
Devotion
It was a year ago this month that 1,800 of us began an exciting
journey of using the Word of Life Quiet Time Journal. It is the
first age-appropriate devotional guide that I have seen with
a long-range plan to read through the scriptures. Children,
youth, and adults have been blessed by this “One-Year Daily
Devotional”. To “devote” means to set apart for a special and
higher goal. Our goal is to know, love, hear, and worship God.
The Journal involves reading a brief passage of scripture and
commentary on that passage, asking key questions: “What is
the writer saying? How can I apply this to my life?” There is also an emphasis on
prayer for a nation or a people group, as well as a “Life Step” application. I have
learned something new each day. This encourages you to write out prayers, as
we “order prayer to God” (Psalm 5:3).
As we have read through various books such as the Psalms, Joshua, Revelation,
John, Proverbs, Hebrews, and 1 Corinthians, we have encountered the Living
Lord. We meditate on the truths and follow the example of Ezra who “devoted
himself to the study and observance of the law of the Lord and to teaching its
decrees and laws in Israel” (Ezra 7:1). I am asking that you “devote yourself” to
renew your commitment for this coming year beginning at the end of August.
May we not be lazy in our learning, lack passion in our pursuit of God, or be
condemned by Jesus’ words, “Have you not read?”
We are not trying to “dumb down” the devotional time nor are we seeking to put
God’s methods on the top shelf out of reach. My prayer is that you “Receive the
Word of God” (1 Thess. 2:13). In your reading, make sure that you are praying. In
your learning, make sure that you are living out His truth. Just as the Israelites
needed fresh manna in the mornings, so must we daily pray, “Give us this day
our daily bread.” The supply of yesterday has not carried over to today. Just
as I breathe fresh air moment by moment, I must draw from God’s boundless
resources on a regular basis.
Even if you were inconsistent in your discipline this past year, this is a great
opportunity to start over. Frankly, most of us miss a day or two or find passages
that we do not understand. Even Peter said that there were “some things hard
to understand in the epistles” (2 Peter 3:16). But “blessed is he who reads the
words … and takes to heart what is written” (Rev. 1:3).
Guest Reception
There is a guest reception in the Commons immediately following the Saturday

Prayer Surge is a church-

wide prayer emphasis.
Join us together as we
pray for...

Our SCHOOLS
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom
and instruction.” --Proverbs 1:7

Praying For Our Teachers:

Pray for their safety and protection. Pray that they place their faith and trust
in God. Pray that they have God’s wisdom and direction in making their
decisions. Pray that they have love and compassion for every child’s well
being. Pray that they are fair in their dealings with their children. Pray that
they administer discipline and correction as Christ would. Pray that they do
everything in their power to love and protect the children.
• Pray for COURAGE: To teach moral values as well as facts from a book.
• Pray for WISDOM: To correct students fairly without infuriating them.
• Pray for PRESEVERANCE: To keep teaching...and teaching until the
lesson is learned.
• Pray for LOVE: That keeps no record of wrongs and is not easily
angered.
• Pray for CREATIVITY: To inspire each child to dream big dreams for
themselves and to reach for the stars.
• Pray for GENTLENESS: That remembers children are human clay that is
easily molded.

Preschool Team
Guatemala
Mission Trip
Report
Twenty four of our people joined Orphan’s Heart (the international arm of
Florida Baptist Children’s Homes) to minister to 67 severely malnourished
children in the Children’s Malnutrition Center in San Juan, Guatemala. No one
was prepared to see children in the condition of Maria Acension (pictured).
This nearly two-year-old only weighs ten pounds and cannot stand or walk
due to malnutrition! Only two workers care for thirty infants, preparing
bottles, feeding, changing diapers and sheets, bathing, folding towels, and
washing dishes. As caring as they are, they cannot give the one-on-one
attention that these children so desperately need. Our team came alongside
the workers and cared for each child personally in every way, and many tears
were shed as we experienced the ravages of malnutrition. Pediatrician Dr.
Dulce Dudley examined each child in the center, administered necessary
treatment, and sent two critically ill children to the hospital. If she had not
gone on this trip, two precious lives would have been lost. Our men not only
cared for the children but also constructed a small house for an 82 year old
homeless woman. As many little eyes looked epectantly to us for help, the
words of Jesus rang in our hearts, “...whatever you did for one of the least of
these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.” --Matthew 25:40.

We are developing an ongoing relationship with this center through Orphan’s

Heart, and additional trips will be planned! For more information, check out
their site at www.orphansheart.org.
Bill & Ginny Hanson
in the
Missions Kiosk
Bill & Ginny Hanson are missionaries with the Association of Baptists for
World Evangelism (ABWE). As missionaries, they assist ABWE missionaries
with building projects globally. Presently, they manage 70 building projects
in 20 different countries. The need is great to have Bill & Ginny come
alongside missionaries to assist with their building projects. Through this
process, the missionaries do not lose focus and valuable time that is needed
in their ministry. They have demonstrated through this building process
that they can save approximately 30-50% on building costs, making sure
Donor’s funds are used effectively. The end result is people coming to know
Christ. Since 1999, God has led the Hanson’s to South Africa, West Africa,
Ghana, Togo, The Gambia, Philippines, Kosovo, Portugal, Bangladesh, and
various portions of South America. God has used Bill & Ginny effectively in
this unique ministry to build churches, schools, mission hospitals, church
camps, and other Christian related facilities globally. Their prayer as they
serve God is that people will be saved or grow closer to Christ through
the projects that God has them involved in. They currently have a financial
shortfall of around $1,600 monthly to effectively facilitate their ministry
around the world. If you have any interest in supporting them financially,
or praying for them, please contact the Hanson’s at billh@abwe.org or
239-494-4883. Financial gifts are fully tax deductable and can also be sent
directly to the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism, Attn: Mr. Glenn
Priddy, P.O. Box 8585, Harrisburg, PA 17105. Please mark on the check that
this financial gift is for Bill & Ginny Hanson, Account #10000.

deepest, heartfelt sympathy to the family of Gloria Hoysler
who passed away last week. She was an active member of
the Combs BLG.

Operation
Immokalee Project
Thanks to your generous gifts, families in
Kingdom Service was able to give over 90
backpacks filled with school supplies and
Bibles to the children in the Immokalee
Apartments. We had a great time serving
them, teaching them about King David’s
reign, and telling about Jesus’ love for
them. We were able to tell them about your love for them as well, and that
was unmistakable in the school supplies that you sent for them. Thank you
for being Jesus’ hands and feet and serving those you do not even know.
