Title: Cool, Calm, and Collected Lesson #: 4 of 5

Lesson Idea/Topic and Students understand the effect temperature has on the states of mater. They
Rational/Relevance: have been introduced to the idea of stability in relation to matter. This lesson will
introduce atoms as a building block of matter and instruct them on the behavior
of atoms within different states of matter to build an understanding of density.

Student Profile: This class is made up of 18 students. 3 of them are ELLS, and 2 are in an active IEP
related to developmental delays. The 2 students on IEP are limited verbally and
only speak in short 3-5 word sentences.

Content Standard(s) addressed by this lesson:

Science; Standard 1: Physical Science

Apply an understanding of atomic and molecular structure to explain the properties of matter and predict
outcomes of chemical and nuclear reactions.

Matter exists in different states such as solids, liquids, and gases and can change from one state to another by
heating and cooling.

Understandings:

Building blocks of matter

Behavior of atoms in different states of matter

Density in relation to matter

How temperature affects matter

Inquiry Questions:

Overarching

 What is matter? What are examples of matter?

 What are the properties of solids, liquids, and gases?

Topical

 How does temperature affect the density of matter?

 How does density affect matter?
 What does atom stability have to do with temperature?

Evidence Outcomes: (Learning Targets)

2

Every student will be able to:

Analyze and interpret observations about matter as it freezes, melts, boils and condenses.

List of Assessments:

 Students will be evaluated on their ability to demonstrate and explain how density relates to different
states of matter (Explain)
 Students will be able to explain how temperature affects the density of atoms in matter (Perspective,
Explain)

Planned Lesson Activities

Purpose of Lesson lesson will allow students to envision the stability of atoms and how atoms behave within
different states of matter.

Materials Materials needed:
Box of Cheerios, Fruit Loops, or any other cereal rings, paper cups access to YouTube.

Anticipatory Set The strategy I intend to use is:

Video (3 States of Matter for Kids-YouTube)

I am using this strategy here because:

The video is playful and introduces atoms within matter simply and in a fun way.

Procedures The strategy I intend to use is:

Direct Instruction-based model of teaching in a whole-class setting

I am using this strategy here because:

Although atoms and molecules are not abstract concepts, because we do not have the
tools to see them and the students might not understand the images of actual atoms if
they did see them, it is important to provide direct instruction to simply tell students what
they are and how they react in states of matter.

Explain that atoms are the

building blocks of matter, so
everything has it.

Recap the video by explaining

that atoms in a gas move all
over because they are unstable,
atoms in a liquid stay together
but are still unstable, and
atoms in a solid stay together
and are stable.

Closure The strategy I intend to use is:

Worksheet discussion.
I am using this strategy here because:
Discussing the worksheet will allow the teacher to recognize if the concept of atoms within
matter was grasped and how its density dictates the state the matter is in was understood
by the students.

Assessment Checking the worksheet below for accuracy should ensure that students are beginning to
understand the relation of density to states of matter. Discussing the worksheet should
leave no doubts.

They are expected to understand the relationship between density and the different
states of matter.
