Comparativos

Los comparativos sirven justamente para comparar una misma cualidad o característica en dos
sustantivos.

Reglas:

Para formar el comparativo, se deben seguir las siguientes reglas:

 Se agrega al adjetivo "er"

Regla: Adj + er + than

Ejemplos:

small – smaller

A mouse is smaller than a cat.

Fast – faster

A car is faster than a bicycle.(Un carro es más rápido que una bicicleta)

cold- colder

Canada is colder than Brasil.(C es más fría que B)

 Si el adjetivo ya termina en "e" se le agrega "r"


Nice - nicer

A dog is nicer than a cat.(Un perro es más agradable que un gato)

Large - larger
My house is larger than hers. (Mi casa es más grande que la de ella.)

 Si la palabra termina en vocal + consonante, se duplica la consonante.

Regla: Adj + consonante + er + than


big – bigger

This elephant is bigger than a cow.(Este elefante is más grande que una vaca)

Fat - fatter
I am fatter than my dad.(Yo estoy más gordo que mi papá)

 Si termina en "y" se cambia por "ier".

Regla: Adj + ier + than


happy – happier
María is happier than Juan.

esy – esier

Ride a bycicle is esier than drive a car. (Montar una bicicleta es más fácil que conducir un auto)

Funny – funnier
Mike is funnier than Isaac.

 Cuando el adjetivo tiene más de tres sílabas, el comparativo se forma usando la palabra
"more" adelante.
Regla: more + adj + than
Expensive - more expensive
Las Vegas is more expensive than Phoenix. (Las vegas es más caro que Phoenix)

Confortable - more confortable


This couch is more confortable than a chair.(Este sofá es más confortable que una silla)

Irregulares

Regla: Adjetivo irregular + than

Existen algunos adjetivos irregulares y los más usados son los siguientes:

good >> better

Mario is better than Marco in soccer. (Mario es mejor que Marco en el futbol)

bad >> worse

-You are a bad student, but she is worse than you are. Tú eres un estudiante malo, pero ella es peor de lo que
tú eres

far >> farther / furth

Luis's house is farther away than José's. La casa de Luis está más lejos que la de José.

Comparatives
The comparatives serve just to compare the same quality or characteristic in two nouns.

Rules:

To form the comparison, the following rules must be followed:

 It is added to the adjective "er"


Rule: Adj + er + than

Examples:

small - smaller

A mouse is smaller than a cat.

Fast - faster

A car is faster than a bicycle.

cold- colder

Canada is colder than Brazil.

 If the adjective already ends in "e", "r" is added


Nice - nicer

A dog is nicer than a cat.

Large - larger

My house is larger than hers.

 If the word ends in vowel + consonant, the consonant is doubled.


Rule: Adj + consonant + er + than

Fat - fatter

I am fatter than my dad.

 If it ends in "y" it is changed to "ier".

esy - esier

 When the adjective has more than three syllables, the comparative is formed using the word
"more" in front.
Rule: more + adj + than

Las Vegas is more expensive than Phoenix.

Comfortable - more comfortable

This couch is more comfortable than a chair.

Irregular

Rule: Adjective irregular + than

There are some irregular adjectives and the most used are the following:

good >> better

Mario is better than Marco in soccer.

bad >> worse

-You are a bad student, but she is worse than you are.

far >> farther / furth

Luis's house is farther away than José's.
