Definition of Security

Security is the safeguarding of life, the protection of property of all kinds from loss through accident,
theft, fraud, fire, explosion, damage or waste and incorporating all aspects of loss
preventionSecurity and protection system, any of various means or devices designed to guard
persons and property against a broad range of hazards, including crime, fire, accidents, espionage,
sabotage, subversion, and attack.

Definition of a Security Guard

A security guard is defined as:

Any person who is paid a fee, wage or salary, to perform one or more of the following functions:

 Prevention or detection of intrusion, unauthorized entry or activity, vandalism or trespass on


private property.
 Prevention or detection of theft, loss, embezzlement, misappropriation or concealment of
merchandise, money, bond, stocks, notes, valuables, documents or papers.
 Protection of individuals from bodily harm.
 Adherence to, and enforcement of, established company rules, regulations, policies and
practices related to crime reduction.
 The reporting and apprehension of violators.

Duty Equipment

1. Notebook and pen for the immediate recording of information relative to an incident so as not
to be dependent on memory.
2. Clock/wristwatch to record the times of events and incidents.
3. Waste bin to keep the area tidy and clean.
4. Telephone/Cell phone to receive incoming calls and to make outgoing calls if necessary to call
emergency services. There should be the list of emergency hotlines posted inside the guard
house.

General Orders of a Security Guard

1. To take charge of the post and all company properties in view and protect/preserve the same
with utmost diligence.
2. To walk in an alert manner during tour of duty and keeping always on the alert, observing
everything that takes place within sight or hearing.
3. To report all violations of regulations and orders he is instructed to enforce.
4. To relay all calls from post from more distant to the security house where he is stationed.
5. To quit his post when properly relieved.
6. To received, obey and pass on to the relieving guard all orders from company officers or
officials, supervisors, post-in-charge or shift leader.
7. To talk to no one except in the line of duty.
8. To sound or call the alarm in case of fire or disorder.
9. To call the superior officer in any case not covered by instructions.
10. To be especially watchful at night and during the time of challenging, to challenge all persons on
or near his post, and to allow no one to pass without proper authority.
11. Monitor and authorize entrance and departure of visitors and other persons to guard against
theft, crime and maintain security of premises.
12. Write reports of daily activities and irregularities, such as equipment or property damage, theft,
presence of unauthorized persons or unusual occurrences.
