BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES

Gerecil Baylon Billones was born on September 29, 1997

in Brgy. Lat-asan, Panay, Capiz. She is eldest among the

five children of Mr. Roger A. Billones and Mrs. Arceli B.

Billones.

She graduated her elementary education at Sapian

Elementary School, Sapian, Capiz in the year 2010. For her

secondary education, she enrolled at Sapian National High

School, Sapian, Capiz and graduated in the year 2014.

With her determination to help her family and eagerness

to obtain a degree, she pursued her tertiary education at

Capiz State University, Mambusao Satellite College,

Mambusao, Capiz taking up Bachelor of Arts, major in

English.

Presently, she is a fourth year college student and

hopes to graduate this March 2018.

Vina Marie Bruño Marcelino was born on May 22, 1997 in

Brgy. Poblacion Sur, Sigma, Capiz to Mr. Moises T. Marcelino

and Mrs. Rosemarie B. Marcelino. She is the youngest

daughter among the three children of the couple.

She graduated her elementary education at Sigma

Elementary School, Sigma Capiz in the year 2009 with honors

and obtained her secondary education at Vicente Andaya Sr.

National High School, Sigma, Capiz in the year 2013.

With her earnest desire to hold a degree, she enrolled

at West Visayas State University, Lapaz, Iloilo City taking

up Bachelor of Arts, major in Journalism, but because of her

eagerness to be an AB English student like her brother and

determination to be a professional someday, she then

enrolled at Capiz State University, Mambusao Satellite

College, Mambusao, Capiz, taking up Bachelor of Arts, major

in English.

During her last year in college days, she served as

Vice President in the Linguist Society, Bachelor of Arts

Department, and Future Leader of the Philippines.

Presently, she is a fourth year college student and

hopes to graduate this March 2018.

Steven Maungca Marcelino was born on March 26, 1997 in

Brgy. Tugas, Mambusao, Capiz. He is the youngest son among

the two children born to Mr. Dioneto D. Marcelino and Mrs.

Mercy M. Marcelino.

He finished his elementary education at Ilawod,

Elementary School, Mambusao, Capiz as first honor during his

Grade two up to Grade five and graduated in the year 2010.

For his secondary education, he enrolled at Mambusao East

National High School, Mambusao, Capiz and graduated in the

year 2014.

With his desire to obtain a degree, he enrolled at

Capiz State University, Mambusao Satellite College and took

up Bachelor of Arts, major in English.

Presently, he is a fourth year college student and

hopes to graduate this March 2018. His dream is to become an

officer in the military field someday.

ABSTRACT

Billones, Gerecil B., Marcelino, Vina Marie B. and

Marcelino, Steven M. Capiz State University, Mambusao

Satellite College, Mambusao, Capiz, March 2018. Self-Esteem

and Public Speaking Anxiety of English Major Students.

Adviser: Prof. Felyn Mae G. Yap

The study was conducted at Capiz State University

Mambusao Satellite College and Burias Campus during academic

year 2017-2018 to find answers to the following questions:

What is the level self-esteem and public speaking anxiety of

English major students as a whole and when classified

according to according to sex, age, year level, course

pursued, monthly family income and membership in

organization?; Are there significant differences in the

level of self-esteem and level of public speaking anxiety

when grouped according to sex, year level, course pursued,

monthly family income and membership to organization?; and

Is there a significant relationship between level of self-

esteem and public speaking anxiety of the respondents?

The researchers gathered data from 88 randomly chosen

college students during the school year 2017-2018 using a

research questionnaires adapted from Heatherton and Polivy

(1991) and McCroskey(1970).

Data were analyzed using both descriptive statistics

and inferential statistics. Results were interpreted at 5

percent level of significance.

As to the personal characteristics of the respondents,

the largest percentage of the respondents were females, 18

years old and above, fourth year college, taking up Bachelor

of Secondary Education, P10,001 and below and joined 1

membership in organization.

The respondents were found to have “average” level of

self-esteem and public speaking anxiety when classified

according to variables, in terms of sex, age, year level,

course pursued, monthly family income and membership in

organization they had an “average” level of self-esteem.

There is significant difference between level of self-

esteem of English major students when grouped according to

sex, year level, course pursued and membership in

organization.

There is significant difference between level of

public speaking anxiety of the respondents when grouped

according to sex and year level.

Finally, there is a significant relationship between

level of self-esteem and public speaking anxiety of the

respondents.
