1.2 Calendar Time Request

The Calendar Time Request function updates the TG time and date.

Prerequisites

The Operation and Maintenance (O&M) link between the Base Station
Controller (BSC) and Service Object Central Function (SO CF) is established.

Initiation

The function is initiated five seconds after the Operation and Maintenance Link
(OML) for CF has been established, and when RU mode is switched from
local to remote.

Description

All main RUs handle a real time clock that is used internally within the RUs as
the system time. The system time is updated by the Calendar Time elementary
procedure on the Abis interface. Calendar Time is distributed to all main RUs.
System time is then updated for those RUs. Calendar Time is periodically
requested and updated while a layer 2 communication link is established. The
request interval is 4 hours.

Termination

The Calendar Time Request function is terminated when OML for SO CF is

released and stopped and when RU mode is switched from remote to local.

1.3 Changes between Local and Remote Mode

This section describes switching RU mode between the states local and remote.

The following functions are included:

• Change RU to local mode, see Section 1.3.1 on page 3

• Change RU to remote mode, see Section 1.3.2 on page 5

1.3.1 Change RU to Local Mode

Changing an RU from remote to local mode means to release and stop layer 2
communication links on the Abis interface and to disable Managed Object
Transmitter (MO TX) and Managed Object Time Slot (MO TS), if enabled.

1.4 Loop Control

The Loop Control function tests the transmission network by looping all traffic
on one TS back to the BSC.

Prerequisites

The prerequisites for the function are the following:

• The MO state should be Disabled

• The RU should be in remote mode

Initiation

The function is initiated by the Loop Control command on the Abis interface.

Description

The Loop Control procedure is a part of the automatic loop test of speech/data
links. The Loop Test can be opened or closed on command from the BSC.
When the test loop is closed, all traffic received by the TS (speech and data) is
looped back to the BSC to test the transmission network.

Termination

The function Loop Control is terminated when a Loop_Control_Complete

message is sent on the Abis interface.

1.5 Max Cooling (RBS 2101, 2102, 2202 only)

The Max Cooling function controls the fans to make them perform maximum
cooling when supervised values have reached certain levels.

Prerequisites

TRU is either local or remote mode.

Initiation

The function is initiated by the Internal Configuration function in the Start and
Restart sequence.

108/1551-LZA 701 0001 Uen E | 2010-08-06 7

Operation and Maintenance Support

Description

After initiation, the TRU temperature and the current transmitter maximum
output power are continuously supervised. This supervision is performed
for each TRU. Depending on the supervised values, the general fan speed
regulation is superseded by the Max Cooling function. The Max Cooling function
is carried out per cabinet. Max Cooling can have the following two states:

• ON = Maximum cooling

• OFF = General fan speed regulation

Maximum Cooling means that the fans are controlled in order to perform their
maximum available cooling.

General Fan Speed regulation means that Maximum Cooling is switched off
and the fans are controlled by a local algorithm.

The Maximum Cooling states are calculated from the supervised entities in the
following ways below.

Max Cooling is in the ON state if at least one of the following conditions is

fulfilled:

• At least one of the supervised TRUs has a temperature that exceeds the
Critical Temperature (CT)

• The maximum output power of at least one transmitter is limited because of

high temperature handling

Max Cooling is in the OFF state if both the following conditions are fulfilled:

• All of the supervised TRUs have a temperature that is a constant value

lower than the CT

• None of the transmitters has its maximum output power limited by high
temperature handling

Max Cooling controls the fans in the following cases:

• At function initiation

• During Max Cooling state change

• After Energy Control Unit (ECU) reset

The Max Cooling state is not updated more frequently than every 30th second.

If Max Cooling fails, the fault is logged, but no further action is taken within the
scope of this function.

1.6 RSSI Temperature Compensation

The Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) Temperature Compensation
function compensates for the loss in the RX (Receiver) path that depends on
temperature.

Prerequisites

The RU must be on.

Initiation

The function is initiated by the Internal Configuration function in the Start and
Restart sequence.

Description

The loss in the RX path varies with temperature. For a more accurate
estimate of the loss, the receiver temperature is measured continuously. The
temperature level is used to update the RSSI temperature compensation value.
The RSSI compensation value is updated at most every 10th second.

Termination

The function terminates when the execution of the RBS software related to the
Transceivers (TRXs) terminates (power off, reset).

1.8 Terminology
Extension Cabinet
In a multiple cabinet configuration, the Extension
Cabinet is the cabinet without the SO CF. The Extension
Cabinet is connected to a master cabinet and cannot
operate without the master cabinet.

Operation and Maintenance Support

Master Cabinet In a multiple-cabinet configuration, the Master Cabinet

is the cabinet with the SO CF. Here, a Master Cabinet is
considered to be equal to a stand alone cabinet.

MO Managed Object

The BSC manages the O&M of the RBS through the

Abis O&M interface. The RBS equipment is seen as
MOs by the BSC. This is a means of describing the
RBS in a function-oriented way, and a logical model
of the RBS in terms of MOs, is built in the BSC. All
O&M actions are based on this logical model structure
created in the BSC. An MO does not necessarily have
a one-to-one relationship with a physical unit in the
RBS and the MO comprises either both hardware and
software or software only.

SO Service Object

A Service Object is an abstract subclass of MO. An

SO instance carries service functions for a set of MO
instances, including itself. The service functions include
Layer 2 termination and Layer 3 distribution. They
may also include hardware supervision and software
handling.
