1.- Read about this ancient board game and underline the verbs in the past.
This is an ancient board game for two players. It originated in China more tan 2,000 years ago. This
game was very popular among both the common people and the aristocrats because it was a
strategy game with very simple rules.
People played on a square board that had horizontal and vertical lines that crisscrossed. They
played this game with black and White stones called “markers”. Each played got the same number
of markers.
Each time one line touched another they formed an intersection or point. The players took turns
placing stones on the intersections. They built their positions on the board by placing a new stone
at each turn. Once a stone was placed on an intersection, it was never moved. The main goal of
the game was to control the most points on the board.

The Spanish were among the first Europeans to explore the New World. By the late 1500s, Spain's
American colonies made it the richest country in Europe. At the same time, people from other
European nations such as England, France, and Sweden began to claim land, too. These first
colonies in North America were established along the Atlantic Coast.
The English government wanted to establish colonies in North America, and, in 1607, a group of
English settlers arrived and built Jamestown, the first permanent settlement in North America. It
had taken them many weeks to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The Pilgrims, who had been persecuted
for their religious beliefs, arrived in 1620 and founded Plymouth Rock. Other English communities
were established all along the Atlantic Coast, from Maine in the north to Georgia in the south.
These English settlers belonged to diverse social and religious groups.
As more and more people arrived in the New World, there were many disputes over the territory
of different countries. In 1664, the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam was taken over by the English
and renamed New York. The struggle for land continued for more than one hundred years nad
there were numerous conflicts in the 1600s and 1700s. Soon, the two countries with the largest
presence were England and France. The two nations fought for control of North America. This was
known as the French and Indian War (1754-1763). England won the war and got control of Canda,
as well as control of all the English colonies.
By the time Britain had won the war, there were already thirteen English colonies on the East
Coast. These colonies were: Masschusetts, New Hamshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York,
New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delawere, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and
Georgia.
