KINGS held a faculty workshop on June 12 and
13th. On the first day of the workshop, President Ahn
shared the new goals and vision for KINGS with the
professors, and discussed plans for the school’s de-
velopment. On the second day, the professors had an
energetic discussion about reforming the trimester
system, as well as setting a new curriculum for the
NPP department, and the addition of a new depart-
ment to the KINGS program. They also gathered the
opinions of the faculty and student recruiting depart-
ments on these and other issues. This workshop was
a good opportunity to display the academic culture of
KINGS in terms of striving to achieve a goal, adapt-
ing to change, and preparing for the future.

The Korean Nuclear Society (KNS) Selects Its Scholarship Student for 2018
The Korean Nuclear Society (KNS) has selected Md
Tanvir Hasan, a member of the class of 2019 from
Bangladesh, as its scholarship student for 2018. The
Korean Nuclear Society (KNS) offers scholarships
to college students majoring in nuclear engineering
every year. Candidates for this scholarship must have
excellent grades, a proven record of promoting com-
munication and rigorous personal performance, and
a solid track record displaying leadership and team-

work among the student body in the field of Nuclear
Power. KINGS accepts applications and makes rec-
ommendations from that pool of applicants who are
personally reviewed by the Chair of the Department
of NPP. Md Tanvir Hasan was determined to be the
best candidate from among a number of excellently
credentialed and accomplished applicants. The award

Nuclear Safety Lab Participates in
CUPID Users Training Workshop
In the wake of Fukushima accident, controlling the
hydrogen risk has become a priority for the safety of
nuclear power plants. To mitigate this risk, a number
of approaches have been proposed. Some examples
are containment inerting or venting, use of passive
auto-catalytic re-combiners, or igniters. However, for
these measures to be effective, a thorough analysis of
the hydrogen dispersion and associated phenomena is
required during both the design phase and the mitiga-
tion phase during a severe accident.
Currently, the nuclear safety lab is investigating
the complex phenomena associated with severe ac-
cidents, particularly with regards to hydrogen risk.
To understand and predict the local behaviour of
steam-hydrogen releases in nuclear reactor con-
tainment, computational fluid dynamics software
packages like CUPID are used. CUPID is a multi-
phase, multi-component, and multi-dimensional
CFD software package developed by KAERI (Ko-
rea Atomic Energy Research Institute) to tackle
thermal hydraulic analyses for nuclear systems de-
sign and safety assessment.
On May 4th, the Nuclear Safety Lab headed to
Daebuk Science Town in Daejon, for the CUPID
Users Training Workshop organized and hosted
by KAERI. There were about 20 participants from
different companies and universities. KINGS was
represented by six individuals. Four were students
from the Nuclear Safety Lab: Mr. Jinwoo Kim, Mr.
Daegwang Hong, Ms. Cidem Cildag, and Mr. Don-
ghyun Cho. The remaining two participants were
professors: Prof. S.Y. Lee and Prof. Aya Diab.
Given the length of the trip, the team from KINGS
hit the road as early as 5:30 in the morning to reach
the destination by 9:00 am. The workshop took
place over the course of an entire day, starting at
9:30 and ending at 17:50. The workshop was ex-
ceptionally well organized and illuminating, and the
team members felt the visit was totally worthwhile.
They felt it was a great opportunity to network with
colleagues at KAERI. Prof. S.Y. Lee’s profound
knowledge and many connections definitely contrib-
uted tremendously to the project progress.
Given the full schedule of the day and the time they
spent together, the team as a whole felt it was a great
opportunity to develop a stronger personal and pro-
fessional relationship. They wanted to convey their
sincere gratitude to the students in the Nuclear Safety
Lab, for bearing the hardships of learning, the work-
load involved in practicing with CFD tools, and for
waking up so early for the workshop. The members
of the lab always showed leadership and responsibil-
ity, working smoothly even under the project some-
times stressful conditions. They also wanted to thank
Ms. S.M. Shin, for arranging all the administrative
work related to the Workshop and the bus driver, Mr.
Dae Joo Kim, for driving them safely to and from
KAERI site in Daejon. Direct interaction and learn-
ing from the CUPID code developers is a valuable
opportunity made possible through the support of
KINGS.

was a great moment because we had the

Sometimes one computer is not enough
to get the job done. We need to spread
the tasks in our team to manage the
work schedule and finish on time. But,
we have to keep something in mind;
whatever we are studying or working,

time with our friends. One of the best
ways to do this is eating Samgyeopsal.
Korea is a unique place, we can feel the

a great adventure. CCP had officially
started and we needed to be ready.
This is a main point in the program of
KINGS, because when students make
strong bonds, then friendship can grow.

Our first stop was the Hyundai Au-
tomobile Factory located in Ulsan.
The facility is considered one of the
World’s largest Manufacturing plants.
This plant can churn out a vehicle every
12 seconds and it has its own sewage
treatment plant and cargo ship pier. Ul-
san is one of the most important cities
in Korea because is a key point in the
economy of the country.

We needed some stress relief, and
writing ATVs and playing survival
games were just what we needed for
this. These games tested our adaptabil-
ity to new challenges and our ability as
human beings. From the smiles in the
picture, you can observe that the result
was a great time had by all.

The second day of CCP was a chal-
lenge. We did not have a Korean friend
with us to translate every single word
to our driver. Despite this situation, we
managed it and we were able to com-
municate; we spoke English and under-
stood his Korean language.

If you want to enjoy the view of the
beautiful mountains in Korea, we truly
recommend you take a tour in a cable
car.
Palgongsan National Park offers a
great tour in the Gatbawi District. If
you are worried about the money, you
just have to keep 1,000 KRW in your
pocket and enjoy a round trip.
We had a great time!

I have visited sites and factories that
store wine in a traditional way. But I
had never thought about a Wine Tunnel.
The wine is made from the Persimmon
fruit. Drinking wine inside of a tunnel
gives a special sensation and makes a
great moment among friends. If you do
not drink alcohol, you can find choco-
lates and other delicious treats made
from the persimmons; you just need to
go to Chengdo district.

A boat is one of the vehicles that you
do not need a license for driving. You
can live the experience and try your
skills as the captain of the boat in
Chengdo. Do not forget to wear a life
jacket, because safety is first. Without
safety, there is no future!

After having some wonderful experi-
ences in building a lot of good memo-
ries; we wanted to show our appre-
ciation to our friends, colleagues, staff
and the distinguished executives from
KINGS for the good moments that we
had during CCP. We prepared and gave
a presentation that demonstrated what
the CCP program means to us.

Leadership is one of the skills that
needs to be developed every day. It
does not matter the situation or cir-
cumstances; when we are responsible
for friends or colleagues, we need to
preserve the harmony and the equilib-
rium in a team, to achieve the goals. 10
students were the team leaders during
CCP program, and they showed excel-
lent leadership skills.

As 2nd-year students, we were very
lucky to be selected for the CCP pro-
gram. During our trip, we recorded our
wonderful experiences and prepared
a video that showed the spirit of our
team. We shared this video in our pres-
entation. During the Awards Ceremony,
we were chosen as the winners, which
was a wonderful surprise.

During the vacation, the international
students in KINGS attended the Hu-
man Resource Development (HRD)
Conference. This event was organized
by KHNP company in cooperation with
IAEA, at Gyeongju. One of the main
targets was to meet the challenges to
ensure the Future Nuclear Work Force
Capability.

At the HRD Conference, KINGS had
the opportunity to share with the Inter-
national Participants what happens at
our institution. Our school is unique in
the world, and this message was spread
by Miss Kim Min-Hye, Miss Kim Na-
young, and Gino at the exhibition place.

During the conference, we needed to
find someplace to eat. For some peo-
ple, it could be hard to find a suitable
option something that we found every-
one enjoyed was Shabu Shabu; a meal
with a lot of good things going for it.
It’s not spicy, not sweet and has great
ingredients. You can cook this soup by
yourself. My Kenyan friends and I re-
ally enjoyed this dish. We said that we
need to go out to eat this more often.

panded our knowledge and horizons.

Hello everyone. We represent the Construction Management Group (also known as PEP-2 Lab)
under the supervision of Prof. Eric Yee, Prof. Wooyong Jung, and Prof. Myungsub Roh. Our
team consists of Byeonghui Song, Mark Gino Aliperio, Unhyeok Jang, Eghwubare Akpoguma,
and Sangho Jeong. We believe in teamwork, strength in unity, and the value in maintaining a bal-
ance between learning and having fun together.

In the previous trimester, our team explored the state-of-practice in contract management, pro-
ject scheduling and delivery, progress control, and cost estimation, as well as their potential ap-
plication to the construction planning of the APR1400 and APR+ systems. These preparatory ac-
tivities are required before the successful implementation of a nuclear power plant (NPP) project
can be achieved. Moreover, there are also a number of project planning activities performed to
help avoid potential problems in construction. Even with careful planning, construction defects,
or discrepancies can still occur. These disagreements in project delivery are typically handled
through litigation or arbitration. That’s why for this trimester, our lab will explore dispute resolu-
tion and will participate in a sample NPP construction case study. Lastly, for the third trimester,
we will identify new construction techniques and technologies that can be integrated in NPP
projects and their potential impact on the construction process of APR1400 and APR+ systems.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude to KINGS LIFE for this

Time and opportunity have enabled us to come to-
gether as a single family entity, full of zeal and vig-
our, to champion the course of our institution. At our
individual levels, we left our countries not knowing
that we would meet ‘strangers’ with same educational
ideological objectives and thereafter fit together with-
in a unique system as a united entity, notwithstanding
our diverse socio-cultural and political backgrounds.
Today, I say with great confidence that I feel secure
in my newly found outfit that has proven beyond any
reasonable doubt to consistently be a service to my
socio-cultural and educational aspirations.
The first 2018 trimester was a beehive of activities:
boot-camp sessions, writing and submission of as-
signments, mid and end term examinations, labora-
tory simulations, writing of lab reports, the election
of the President of Students’ Council, among other
activities. I’m happy to report that we undertook a
peaceful and a well-structured election process and
the students bestowed upon me, through popular vote,
opportunity to be their leader. I express my profound
gratitude for the overwhelming support I was given
to be the students’ mouthpiece in both administrative
and non-administrative affairs. I subsequently con-
firm with great humility my acceptance of the task.
Onwards, we will move together!
I appreciate the former Student Council leadership
for the remarkable achievements they made. In the
spirit of continuous improvement, I subsequently
wish to spearhead a raft of administrative issues, all
geared towards bettering our lives in KINGS as well
as enabling realization of the broader institution’s
mandate. As the students’ leader, here are my priority
agenda during my course of tenure in office:
1) To work hand in hand with the new KINGS
President in his noble task of implementing
both short-term and long term KINGS’ devel-
opmental agenda
2) Developing and Refining a KINGS Students’
Constitution that will guides operational
frameworks for students
3) Advocacy for practical capacity building
through improving the institution’s linkages

is uniquely the best! Together, let us work to maintain
or even better the reputation of our great institution.
As my slogan went: Onwards Together! We hope
to bring everybody on board through a model of of
stakeholder driven, servant leadership to move our
great institution forward as a whole. As the institution
counts on my team, I count on all KING’s stakehold-
ers for partnership and all-round support. Henry Ford
once said “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping
together is progress. Working together is success.”

A Thank You Letter
to Our Professors
Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai once said “One
child, one teacher, one pen, and one book can change
the world.” Rightly so, for without a mentor over our
heads, a guide to distinguish right from wrong, we
would all be bodies without spirit. While growing up,
the only person we tend to respect after our parents,
are our teachers. It is therefore important to realize that
all our KINGS professors are dedicating substantial
amounts of their time and energy to shape our school
into a globally eminent one by nurturing leadership-
level NPP professionals. The most compelling evi-
dence is their continuous efforts to introduce an in-
novative method like team teaching and team learning
that could help us to handle the national nuclear power
projects in near future. Henceforth, we are very grate-
ful to all the KINGS professors who are mentoring us
to pursue the dream of becoming the next generation
top engineer.
So I’d like to say thank you to directly our professors.
Your valuable contributions, guidance, and encourage-
ment have given new impetus to our work.
I would especially like to recognize a sincere, ingen-
ious, and wonderful person who is also an esteemed
educator, my supervisor Prof. Hak-kyu Lim. I send

KINGS Residents Participated
in Readiness Drills
for Radioactive Disasters
KINGS participated in the Radioactive Disaster
Protection Training held in the UNIST gymnasium
on May 16. On this day, 400 people, including staff
from the Ulju Police Station, the Onsan Fire Station,
the Ulsan Branch of Korea Red Cross, Seosan-my-
eon, Onyang-eup, Onsan-eup, and the KINGS stu-
dents, faculty and staff participated in the training
exercise.
During the practice drill, the Victim Management
System facilitated by a number of Radiation Con-
sultants was in full operation so that the residents
were familiar with the procedure for moving to their
designated shelters in the event of a radiation emer-

Brazilian Delegation
Visited KINGS
A delegation from Ministry of Mines and Energy
(MME) and Electronuclear of Brazil visited KINGS
campus on May 3. They listened to a presentation on
the KINGS curriculum, discussed the current status
of the nuclear industry with President Ahn and sev-
eral professors and toured the campus. Afterwards,
they met with a Brazilian student attending KINGS
and shared his campus life at KINGS.
Brazil is considering resumption of construction
on Angra #3. Moreover, Brazil is moving forward
with plans to build new nuclear power facilities that
will generate an additional 10,000MW from two
sites (Pernambuco, Minas Gerais). It is hoped that
this visit will demonstrate the excellence of Korean
NPP technology, and provide an important opportu-
nity for Korea and Brazil to trade NPP systems and

Special Lecture on Teaching Methodology:
4th Industrial Revolution and
Future Education
KINGS held a special lecture on teaching meth-
odology on May 21, 2018. Im Jin-hyouk, a dis-
tinguished graduate professor in the IT school at
POSTECH, delivered a lecture on the fourth Indus-
trial Revolution and future education. He identified
problems about the current status of education and
introduced possible solutions, such as MOOC and
flipped learning, which are representative methods
of self-directed learning.
President Ahn said that he would compose a task
force to develop KINGS own teaching methodology.
Through these efforts, his vision is to make KINGS
a unique and special university.
KINGS plans to hold this kind of special lecture
regularly to help professors develop and improve
a diverse array of teaching methodologies for their

Conference in Gyeongju, Korea
KINGS participated in the “Third International
Conference on Human Resource Development for
Nuclear Power Programmes: Meeting Challenges to
Ensure the Future Nuclear Workforce Capability”
held in Gyeongju, Korea from May 28 to May 31 ,

As one of the exhibitors of the conference organ-
ized by the IAEA and hosted by KHNP, the school
used the opportunity at its exhibition booth to dem-
onstrate its education program and admission policy
to the participants from IAEA member states and
other international organizations.
In addition, KINGS professor Chang Choong-
Student Counselling in KINGS
On April 4, 2018, team of student affairs welcomed
the experienced counselors from the Torch Trin-
ity Counseling Center located in the Torch Trinity
Graduate School. They visited the KINGS to con-
duct its counseling program, 21 ONE-ON-ONE, at
16:00 to help all of the new international students
settle well in school by asking psychological inquir-
ies and detecting if any of them have ever suffered
from internal challenges with the result of the Per-
sonality Assessment Inventory they filled out in the
new student orientation 2018 last February. In the
result of the survey, 67 percent of students who par-
ticipated answered it was of help. /Lee Hwan-teak
koo made a presentation titled Project Base Team
Learning and Team Teaching in Practical NPP En-
gineering Education on May 28 at the first session
on Workforce Planning. Additionally, many students
from KINGS attended the conference and improved
their understanding of human resource development
for nuclear power programs.
Meanwhile, KINGS, in partnership with KHNP,
held an international student competition in con-
junction with the conference for students aged 14-
18. The purpose of the competition was to foster
the younger generation’s interest in nuclear sci-
ence and technology. KINGS had been working in
close cooperation with KHNP since last December
on the administrative arrangements to make sure
the competition was a success. The school not only
publicized the competition to all national secondary
schools in Korea, but also prepared Korean culture
tours for the finalists of the competition.
