En la sección precedente, el límite de una suma se
utilizó para definir el área de una región en el plano.
La determinación del área por este medio es solo una
de las muchas aplicaciones que involucran el límite
de una suma. Un enfoque similar puede utilizarse
para determinar cantidades tan diversas como
longitudes de arco, valores medios, centroides,
volúmenes, trabajo y áreas y superficies. La
siguiente definición honra el nombre de Georg
Friedrich Bernhard Riemann. Aunque la integral
definida se había utilizado con anterioridad, fue
Riemann quien generalizó el concepto para cubrir
una categoría más amplia de funciones.
Nuestra definición de integral definida nos exige que f sea continua en a, b .
De hecho algunas funciones discontinuas son integrales. Por ejemplo es fácil
demostrar que la función f x = x , es integrable en cualquier intervalo
cerrado. Pero a pesar de no ser necesaria, la continuidad de una función es
condición suficiente para su integrabilidad y enunciaremos esta importante
propiedad, sin demostración en el siguiente TEOREMA. Si f es continua en
a, b , entonces también es integrable en a, b .
