Unlike many of the Buses we feature, the
interesting thing about this Camper is that it
hasn’t just been completed! It’s not fresh out of
VW Downunder’s workshops, in fact it’s far from
a recent restoration. It was done over five years
ago and has been used to travel far and wide
since. This is the reason we became interested
in the vehicle and decided to cover it in the
magazine. After being completed, the Deluxe
Campmobile started a new chapter in its story
with a couple in France, Francoise and Flora.
Whilst they clearly looked after the ’78, it was
used to tour around Europe and returned back to
VW Downunder annually for maintenance. To be
registered in France and meet with regulations,
the camper had to go through the stringent
Contrôle Technique test, basically the French
equivalent of our MoT. The good news is the VW
aced the test and has recently done the same
again. Well, what did you expect?

A new chapter
The work carried out by VW Downunder was
clearly done to stand the test of time. A fully
stripped and sand blasted under carriage,
coated with non-porous POR15 keeps moisture
away from the metal and inhibits the rust, the
body was restored inside and out, although we
must report the exterior had picked up a few
war wounds on its travels across Europe. As
health issues gave Francios and Flora no option
but to pass the ’78 on, it was sold back to VW
Downunder and to make it perfect once more
it was given a new coat of paint. The Deluxe
Campmobile was ready for its next chapter, and
you won’t believe this… the new owners are a
couple that live in France and they are already
planning on touring Europe in their new Bus.

udi Yumos is the proprietor of the

skilled fabricators and mechanics
turn his visions and ideas into rolling works
of art. 47-year old Yudi is responsible for
many other wild creations, including a
41-window limo-Bus and some amazing one-
off Porsche replicas, and the impressive 1750
square-metre Yumos Garage has built quite a
reputation for creating some superb Samba
re-creations in recent years, too. Starting
with Brazilian-built Bay Window, Yumos cut
away the front end and fit their own Split
screen front-end panels and Samba window
sections... It’s a huge job, but the finished
faux-Sambas are simply amazing.
However, this project is a little different,
and came about following a sad incident
regarding a ’77 Bay window show Bus, which
was destroyed in a road accident on the way

Opera¢ng around the Ridgidome Quick Erect System, the Dub Hub is not only excep¢onally quick and easy to erect but
also offers complete flexibility, thanks to its modular design. The door panels on both the leº and right hand side of

Once again, when travelling overseas you need to include some basics
such as a warning triangle, hi-vis jackets for all passengers, spare bulbs /
fuses, roadside breathalyser kits, headlight beam adjusters / stickers, a GB
badge, a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher etc. We’d also suggest you pack
a good quality jack (and check that your spare tyre is in good order), a fairly
comprehensive toolkit and a bag of service items (fanbelt, distributor cap /
rotor arm, points, condenser, ignition leads etc).
And don’t forget some kind of emergency cover (AA / RAC / Green Flag etc),
and be sure to check that your vehicle is fully covered in every country you
visit before you set-off. Oh, and it would make sense to check that you are
covered for recovery to home rather than just ‘to a local garage’ just in case
things go very wrong and you find yourself stranded overseas with a very
broken Camper (and a huge repair bill…).

Money / budget
Whilst it’s difficult to predict
exactly how much your road trip
is likely to cost, you should at
least try to account for fuel, food,
accommodation and related expenses
to cover the entirety of your trip.
And don’t forget to add a decent-

cover unplanned expenses such as
running repairs, punctures and other
emergencies.

So, what’s been happening lately?

Lots of the same really. We’re now in our eleventh
year of trading but we’ve still got the same drive
and passion that we’ve always had. The workshop
has changed a bit since the last time we were in
the magazine. We’ve expanded to give us more
room and create dedicated areas. On the one side
we have the bodyshop and final assembly areas
- the clean zone - and on the other we have our
fabrication and mechanical side, where we carry out
all of the messier work.

is a shared project and was always going to be sold when
completed, so we began looking at sales and auctioneers well
ahead of when we thought the Bus was completed. We had
aimed for an auction in October, but issues with finishing the
Bus meant we eventually went with a December auction, which
was less successful than we’d hoped.
I would definitely say that time of year has a major impact
on success and sales prices – the winter months, especially the
run-up to Christmas and January are the worst times to try and
sell a vehicle by any method. Take our results as a lesson and,
if you can, plan ahead for a Spring or Summer sale.
There are several classic car auctioneers in the UK. At the
end of this how-to, there are several companies listed in most
areas of the UK – proximity to where you live will likely be a
factor in your decision, as transport costs may be prohibitive
otherwise. As we are based in Southsea on the south coast, we
chose to sell at a Barons auction at Sandown Park in Surrey –
home of the VolksWorld Show.
It goes without saying that you should carefully read through

HOW TO

05 Decide on guide
price and reserve
amount
Perhaps the most
important step when it
comes to selling your
Bus at auction, the
guide price and reserve
amount will have an impact on whether your Bus actually sells
and the amount you need to get from it.

Guide price
The guide price actually has no real link to the actual price that
it will sell for at auction. Auctioneers are a little sneaky when
it comes to guide prices, as they like to keep guide prices on
06 Fill in online Form and pay entry fee
Different auction companies will run different systems,
the low side, in order to attract bidders who think they may be but when it came to Barons Auctioneers, there was an online
able to get a bargain. In general, the higher the guide price, form to fill in with all the pictures, details, guide price and
the less interest there will be on the day of the auction. For a reserve amount, after which you’ll need to enter your card
first-time auction seller, this can take some getting your head details and pay for the entry fee in advance. Most auctioneers
around, as you wouldn’t normally advertise a car for less than have standard and premium entries – the difference being
you intend to sell it for. that a premium entry will benefit from being listed in any press
related to the auction ahead of time.
Reserve price It goes without saying, that if you’re consigning your Bus
If you’re ballsy, or just need to get a car sold at all costs, then quite late in the day, then a premium listing is a bit of a
you can opt for a no reserve auction. The pitfalls of this are waste of time, but do question the auctioneer exactly what a
obvious, as once the hammer falls, your car will have to be standard and premium listing includes and base your decision
sold even if it is for an amount much lower than you expected. on that at the time.
The good thing about no reserve auctions though, is that they
attract bidders who know they can buy a car with their bid –
often these are the auctions where bidding wars ensue. For
the less ballsy (or more sensible) it’s worth setting a reserve
price so you don’t lose your life savings if bidding doesn’t go
according to plan.
When setting your reserve price, you’ll need to take into
account what you need to have you have paid the listing fee
and seller premium – the net amount once all deductions
and transport costs have been taken off. It’s worth noting
that prospective bidders won’t see your reserve price before
bidding, so a higher reserve won’t put buyers off like a high
guide price will. This being said, the auctioneer you are using
will advise you on what they think the guide price and reserve
should be but do feel free to stick to your guns and go with
your gut.
When it comes to figuring out your reserve price and guide
prices, it can be helpful to go through details of past auctions
and viewing online pricing and results – this will give you an
idea of historical results.
07 Promote on social media
Although each auctioneer has their own ways of
promoting their sale and the vehicles that are being sold, it
can’t harm matters to do some of your own promo stuff on
the internet in the run-up to the sale. If you think about it,
just one extra person at an auction can make the difference
between a bidding war and great selling price, or a no sale.
If you have your own social media channels, or some friends
on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter then it’s good to get some
pictures and the sale date out there.
A word of caution: Here’s where communication about
explicit details with the auctioneer pays dividends. In our case,
we didn’t realise that Barons would be putting up a classified
listing on eBay for the reserve price, so we did our own. What
this resulted in, was two virtually identical eBay classified
listings for the same Bus but with different prices and seller
details. The problem with this is that people are all too aware
of internet scammers and this may have affected the credibility
of our Westy – we’ll never know for sure, but it definitely might
have put some people off attending or bidding.

88 CAMPER&BUS
10 Auction sales – How it works
When it comes to your Bus being sold, it will likely be
presented on a TV screen next to the auctioneer’s podium.
On the podium itself will be the auctioneer in the centre, with
other staff members to the side, who will be dealing with
internet and phone bidders and communicating this to the
auctioneer.
When it came to the sale of our Westy, unfortunately, there
were some issues; not only was the Barons website down for
internet bidders on the day of the auction, but someone also
forgot to change the TV screen over from the previous lot,
which doubtless led to some bidder confusion. Although the
Westy got bids up to £21,500 it didn’t meet reserve.
If your vehicle doesn’t meet reserve, sometimes a bidder
will approach the auctioneers and try to make a deal. What
08 Transport your Bus to auction
There are a couple of options when it comes to actually
you need to be aware of, is that even if you sell your vehicle
privately up to 14 days after the auction end, the auctioneer’s
getting your Bus to and from the auction. If you are planning may charge you seller credit, as assumptions will be made
to drive it, it goes without saying that you should have that the buyer gained interest through the auction. Check the
adequate insurance cover – agreed value policies usually don’t terms and conditions carefully of the auctioneer you are using.
cost more than a regular classic car insurance policy and are
well worth the extra time it takes to provide the insurer with
pictures and details of your prize possession.
If you decide to transport the Bus to auction instead, it may
be tempting to just hire a trailer and take it yourself, but be
aware that, unless you have goods in transit cover, if there is
an accident you may end up losing the Bus and not being
covered by insurance. It’s often better to employ a reputable
company with goods in transit cover.
As with most insurance companies, Barons required the
Bus to be at the venue 1-2 days ahead of the auction ideally
and to be taken away the same day as the auction if not sold.
Many auctioneers will allow you to deliver your vehicle on
the morning of
the sale, but be
aware that your
Bus will miss out
