James Peene, editor of the magazine has a few words

ello, and welcome to the June issue.
I can say that, because my ramblings
have been moved from the back of the
mag to the front. So, hello there.
The last month has pretty much flown by.
Since busting a gut for the bumper Spring
issue, I’ve mostly been about the DIY. Sadly,
not on any of my VWs, but frantically (for me)
trying to get my new house ready for everyone
currently living in it, and the Peene bean
growing ever larger in my girlfriend.
As you can see, my trusty ’68 Deluxe has
been pressed into action for multiple dump
runs as I’ve ripped out acres of old carpet and
demolished shed loads of hideous wardrobes
in the pursuit of making my new abode a fit
place to bring up a shiny new Peene.

Your pride and joy is our delight to share, so here they are
1990 Type 25 Syncro, Dai Williams
D
ai Williams has owned his 1990
Syncro for around 14 years and it’s
powered by a 2.5-litre Subaru engine,
which he did himself, along with installing
an LPG conversion, too. Quite a bit of
bodywork modification, in the form of wheel
arch stretching, lifting and widening, plus
extending the rear swing arms, was required
in order to shoehorn in the large wheels. These
are 15 x 10 Mach 5 wheels, which are made
primarily for Land Rovers, but Dai contacted
the manufacturer and they made him 10
wheels especially to fit his Bus - the only 10
ever made for a Type 25. They are shod with

31x 10.50 -15 tyres, which are far bigger than
you can fit on the Type 25 normally.
An additional hatch was grafted in from a
Single Cab to accommodate loads of camping
gear etc. Other modifications include fitting
Austin Maestro front headlamps and a winch,
which required a bespoke bumper.
The running gear also features Volkswagen
Sharan rear discs and calipers from Holman
Engineering.
“I understand that the first owner was a
guy in Brighton, West Sussex, who bought the
Type 25 from Volkswagen and had the roof

The interior that’s in the Bus now, was
installed by a friend of Dai’s from Sheffield,
Dubterior and it was the first conversion he
completed. The top is Wenge and the rest is
all maple. It comprises of some lovely curved
sections and there’s also a full complement
of LED lights fitted in the roof, floor and even
the engine bay. The front Recaro seats are
from a Rover 820 Vitesse. Dai uses his Bus a
lot and has- completed a trip to the Pyrenees,
Germany, Spain and explored most of Europe
and without any problems at all.

Whitestar - can you guess what colours they
came in?
The Multivan kit was courtesy of
Westfalia and consisted of a rock ’n’ roll
bed, table and a special order cool box. This
one has a non-original Westy pop-top, too.

with a Bus build in mind and
the result is the Bus here.
Let’s begin by saying that
it is very difficult to import
a car into China. If you can
get an agreement to do so,
you will be levied with 112%
tax on the purchase price of
the vehicle. This has led to
many of the more westernised
affluent Chinese people

importing classic cars on the
black market from Japan and
using them illegally at night.
Fortunately for Mark, his
customer is more legitimate
and, through links with the
government, has gained a
trade licence to import Buses.
Test-ying
The test Bus, Ying, is the one
you see here and has been
restored to stock condition,
excepting the extensive use of
the vibrant hues so popular in
China. The Bus itself is a ’67,
which Mark bought as a lot
of three Buses from a family
who lived in the sticks in
northern California. Having sat
for around 20 years, the Bus
needed a little help but wasn’t
really too bad compared to a
lot of Buses out there.
The customer chose an
option one restoration
package, with the added extra
of an SO42 pop-top conversion.
When it came to the body
restoration, the body was fully
vapour blasted, so it could
be taken back to bare metal.
Vapour blasting is a lot kinder
to the steel and results in a lot
less chance of warping large
panels than sand or iron oxide
blasting.
Although Mark has
always favoured vapour
blasting, the company are
now experimenting with
Phosphoric acid dipping,
which gets into all the cavity
sections and leaves no stone
unturned. Subsequent Buses
to this one have been dipped
using a local company, but
Mark is hoping to be able to
handle the process in-house
by the end of the year – the
company are moving to a
1950’s Brick built 27,000 sq ft
factory in July this year, which
will have space for all this.
With Ying’s bare shell back
from the blasters and coated
in Epoxy primer while the
repairs were carried out, the
metal repair could be carried
out in earnest. Ying was put
on a 360-degree rotisserie
and, being a California Bus,

the guys got lucky with the
amount of new metal needed
– it was limited to a few small
localised repairs.
With the body now 100% rust
free and coated in epoxy, it was
now time to coat the underside
with UPOL Raptor truck bed
liner, which was tinted to
match the intended VW L20B
Brilliant Orange paintwork.
Morecambe and Wize have
been using Raptor since it was
launched onto the market and
are very impressed with how
tough and impervious to stone
chips it is. After this was dry,
the hours of body working the
Bus could ensue, before the Bus
went into the in-house body
shop for a few coats of L20B
Brilliant Orange on the lower
half and L90D Pastel White on
the upper half.
Less is more
When it comes to added
bling, Ying is nowhere near as
adorned as some Buses we’ve
seen, having painted overrider
bumpers and some Deluxe
trim fitted for a bit of added

interest. There are no stainless
safaris or pop-outs either,
but this gives the Bus a more
simplistic and original look,
which really suits it, especially
with the SO42 pop-top.
After this, the refit could
begin, with the 16-strong team
focusing on the mechanical
side of the build first. The
Bus has been given a nut and
bolt mechanical restoration
– 95% of the components
are replaced in these builds,
with 5% constituting rebuilt
original parts. The only things
that are not handled in-house
on this side of the builds, are
the engine and gearbox – the
gearboxes are supplied by
Rancho and the engines by
The VW Engine Company in
London – Morecambe and Wize
have had over 50 engines from
this company now, which Mark
uses as they have a similar
customer-oriented approach to
his own company.

is a completely stock 1500
single port, correct for the
1967 model year and built
up with all new ancillary
parts, including an alternator
conversion, Bosch blue
coil and Pertronix Ignitor
electronic ignition. This is
fitted to the aforementioned
rebuilt original split Bus
transaxle, complete with
new reduction box bearings
and seals. With all of the
rolling stock taken care of, the
original 14” steel wheels could
be painted in Pastel White,
before being mounted with
new 185 R14C tyres.
Tailor-made
With the rolling stock taken
care of, the Bus could now
move into the interior shop
for a full refit; the interior
cabinetry for all Morecambe
and Wize Buses is CAD
designed and laser cut,
ensuring perfect quality each
and every time. With Ying, a
fairly light environmentally
sourced Beech ply was chosen

to complement the interior
fabrics and overall look.
Similarly, when it comes
to upholstery, Mark’s brother
Tom, formerly a tailor on
Savile Row, has worked very
hard to ensure the upholstery
has no stretching, wavy piping,
or other commonly seen
issues. There are even things
like tapers on some of the
curtains to match the contours
of the Bus and magnets sewn
in, so they sit against the
window apertures and don’t
let the light in.
The finished result, while
very bright, also maintains an ▲ Fresh 1500
air of originality, especially with from the VW
the stock ride height and tyres.

ack in 1978 this Westfalia Camper was
the top of the range offering in the
United States. You could have chosen
from three models, all sold under the
name Campmobile. There was the P21 Standard,
which came painted in mono-tone Pastel White
with orange plaid upholstery, and was basically
a two-berth Camper with a solid steel roof.
Buyers could add an optional raising-roof with
double bed, should they wish, but doing so
would have resulted in having the same vehicle
as the second model VW of America offered, the
P22 Pop-Up Top Campmobile. Although P21 with
optional roof would have still been Pastel White,
the P22 came in L63H Sage Green with a green
plaid cloth interior. Finally, there was the range-
topping P27 Deluxe Campmobile in L13A Dakota
Beige (a colour only offered during 1978) with a
beige and brown plaid interior.
If you opted for the top dog Campmobile you’d
have an electric refrigerator, rather than a cool
box (which relied on the addition of ice to do its
stuff), an exterior ‘city water hook-up’ (found
under the gas vent on the panel on the driver’s
side long panel, a storage box / buddy seat,
upholstered in matching plaid and designed to
fit between the cab seats. The buddy seat could
be moved and used as an additional seat when
parked up and dining. The Deluxe also got a
twin burner gas stove, although it was optional
on the P21 and 22 Campmobiles. Last on the list
of extras you’d have found in the Deluxe was a
snack table in the cab for driver and shotgun.
Turning time back
Thanks to experience gleaned from the
quarter of a century it had been designing
and manufacturing Campers for Volkswagen,
Westfalia was peerless. The Deluxe Campmobile
was not just superb in use of the space available,
it was also unrivalled in terms of quality. We
were, therefore, very happy to find this example
retains the full original interior. Forty years have
passed since Westfalia made the furniture and,
thanks to the tone of wood laminate used for
the cabinets (dressed with black fittings) it has
a characteristically ’70s look to it. It must be like
being inside Jim Rockford’s trailer on the Pacific
CAMPER&BUS 31
coast, or every office Colombo visited each time
you climb inside this Camper. The bold Westfalia
-specific plaid upholstery and silver birch wood
roof panelling bolsters the appearance.
Oh, just one more thing… We’ve investigated
the subject of the laminate and the closest
match we found was Colonial Cherry by
Formica. Interesting, no?
Spec check
Originally sold in California, where it remained
until 2011, this four-berth Westfalia P27 could
also sleep a child across the cab seats. The rear
seat served three roles; a passenger seat whilst
driving, a bench when static or dining and it
folded down to become a double bed. The front
passenger seat swung around to face the rear
when camping. The main kitchen area offered
four storage sections for food and crockery, a
plastic fresh water tank and two drawers for
utensils and cutlery. A sink and the gas stove
are fitted in the top of the unit, concealed by a
folding lid that doubles as a work surface when
closed. For safety, the inside of the lid has a
metal inner panel to protect the laminate from

any risk of fire when the stove is in use. The
unit also features a pronounced upright door
just behind the drivers cab seat, which you’ll
probably be surprised to hear is where the spare
wheel is stored!
Talking of storage, pretty much every possible
nook and cranny that could utilised has. Let’s
start outside; the front of the pop-top roof is
actually a recessed luggage carrier, with tie-
down hoops, offering an area measuring 44 ¼ by
22 ¼ inches. Raising the roof and unzipping the
front of the canvas provides access for loading
and unloading luggage.
Insider info
Inside, Westfalia provided storage under the rear
seat, which you can get to either by lifting the
hinged seat base or via the fold down flap under
the seat. There’s another storage locker mounted
above the rear seat, an upright cupboard and
three vertical stowage bins which are situated
at the very back of the unit. Of course, you can
also use the luggage area behind the rear seat.
Finally, there’s a fold out / storable dining table.

vehicle and two on a fold out bed up in the roof
when raised.
Return crossing
Some 33 years after leaving Germany for a life in
California, this trusty Westy was shipped back to
Europe by importer Michael O’Malley of Osterley
Classics. Paul Mullinger, the man behind
Essex-based specialists; VW Downunder (www.
vwdownunder.co.uk) jumped at the chance of
buying the ’78 once it arrived in Blighty, because,
as he puts it: “Very solid, original and low
mileage Buses like this don’t come up for sale
very often, and they make great resto projects.”
The VW Downunder team restored the
Camper with one eye on originality and the
other on improvement; as Paul explains: “We
made a few modern updates because let’s face
it, it’s great driving a classic VW camper but if
you could have one or two features like power
steering and servo assisted brakes, then why
wouldn’t you have them?” So, take it as read that
this Westy now sports a power steering kit from
Lite Steer and a complete new and improved
“Solid, original and low mileage Buses like
this don’t come up for sale very often”
braking system. But the list certainly doesn’t
end there, as pretty much every component has
been restored or replaced, but that’s the norm at
VW Downunder.
Other upgrades include rear 3-point seat belts,
fresh upholstery with high-density foam, the
best quality roof canvas, inner roof lining, iPod
stereo and speakers, plus a 2kw Webasto petrol
heater for those cold winter nights.
An AFC fuel injected 1970cc Type 4 engine
would’ve powered this Campmobile when it
rolled off the production line in 1978. The 2-litre
lump made 67bhp at 4,200rpm and was the
ultimate unit in the evolution of the air-cooled
Type 2. Performance, in terms of top speed came
in at 75mph, but fuel and economy weren’t
words you could use together without bowing
your head. At best, you might see 25mpg on a
run and around town you’d be lucky to realise
20mpg!
A fully rebuilt 2-litre unit from the VW Engine
Company (www.thevwenginecompany.com),
fitted with carburetors rather than fuel-injection
assures this ’78 will keep pushing forward
reliably for many years to come.

 Unlike many of the Buses we feature, the
interesting thing about this Camper is that it
hasn’t just been completed! It’s not fresh out of
VW Downunder’s workshops, in fact it’s far from
a recent restoration. It was done over five years
ago and has been used to travel far and wide
since. This is the reason we became interested
in the vehicle and decided to cover it in the
magazine. After being completed, the Deluxe
Campmobile started a new chapter in its story
with a couple in France, Francoise and Flora.
Whilst they clearly looked after the ’78, it was
used to tour around Europe and returned back to
VW Downunder annually for maintenance. To be
registered in France and meet with regulations,
the camper had to go through the stringent
Contrôle Technique test, basically the French
equivalent of our MoT. The good news is the VW
aced the test and has recently done the same
again. Well, what did you expect?

A new chapter
The work carried out by VW Downunder was
clearly done to stand the test of time. A fully
stripped and sand blasted under carriage,
coated with non-porous POR15 keeps moisture
away from the metal and inhibits the rust, the
body was restored inside and out, although we
must report the exterior had picked up a few
war wounds on its travels across Europe. As
health issues gave Francios and Flora no option
but to pass the ’78 on, it was sold back to VW
Downunder and to make it perfect once more
it was given a new coat of paint. The Deluxe
Campmobile was ready for its next chapter, and
you won’t believe this… the new owners are a
couple that live in France and they are already
planning on touring Europe in their new Bus.

this hand-built Camper. Paul Knight
checks out the story behind this
amazing creation

Y
udi Yumos is the proprietor of the
infamous Yumos Garage in Semarang,
Indonesia, where his team of highly
skilled fabricators and mechanics
turn his visions and ideas into rolling works
of art. 47-year old Yudi is responsible for
many other wild creations, including a
41-window limo-Bus and some amazing one-
off Porsche replicas, and the impressive 1750
square-metre Yumos Garage has built quite a
reputation for creating some superb Samba
re-creations in recent years, too. Starting
with Brazilian-built Bay Window, Yumos cut
away the front end and fit their own Split
screen front-end panels and Samba window
sections... It’s a huge job, but the finished
faux-Sambas are simply amazing.
However, this project is a little different,
and came about following a sad incident
regarding a ’77 Bay window show Bus, which
was destroyed in a road accident on the way

 “It almost looks as if it could
have been factory built”
home from the Jogja event in
2013. Tragically the driver lost
his life in the accident, and
his family eventually decided
to part out the remains of
the Bus, which is where Yudi
stepped in with a unique
plan. He explained: “I decided
that I would like to create a
new project based around the
chassis of the Bus, which could
be displayed as a tribute at a
future Jogja event.”
And so, when the smashed
Bay ’shell arrived at Yumos
Garage, the bodywork was cut
away from the chassis and
Yudi soon began to sketch out
some designs. Once he was
happy with the proportions
and the overall concept, Yudi
then created a full set of
accurate scale-drawings to
ensure that his team would
have no problems realising his
dream. The plan was to create
a snail-shaped Camper body,
which would be 15cm longer
than a stock Bus and 30cm
wider overall. Incidentally, the
hand-made body would also
be dropped over the chassis by
10cm, thereby visually lowering
the finished vehicle.
The finished plans were
handed to the fabricators, who
set about creating a skeletal
framework from 5cm x 3cm
steel box sections, before
shaping up and fitting Split
screen front-end sheet metal to
create the cab. Of course, this
was no simple task, but these
guys really know their stuff,
hence it wasn’t long before
the rear end body panels were
being formed, pressed and cut
from 2mm aluminium sheet.
The body sections were TIG-
welded together and include a
neat, pressed upper side panel,
which breaks up the slab sides
and also provided the perfect
place to add a ‘Yumos’ logo.
A lot of thought went into
the bodywork of The Snail and
we just love the huge ‘pop-
up’ roof and those neat side
doors, which not only provide
great access to the engine bay
(when servicing etc), but are
also louvered to ensure that
the 1835cc motor receives cool,
fresh air at all times. Other
neat tricks include a hand-
made rear bumper and superb
pop-out side windows and
frames, all made in-house, of
course. The use of stock Type
2 fuel flap, side door handle,
engine lid and rear lights really
makes this project work – in
fact, it almost looks as if it
could have been factory-built.
Yudi mixed the brown and
off-white paint for this project
himself and also designed
the graphics and upper-body
detailing, which work so well
on this retro-styled creation.
And, with the paintwork

completed with the addition of
Deluxe belt line trim, ‘trucker’
side mirrors (required to
see around the wide body!),
a Cyclops spot lamp on the
cab roof, Safari front ’screens
and fresh trim and seals
throughout.
The Snail was then handed
to the Yumos mechanics,
who fitted a servo to fresh
brakes and overhauled the
running gear from front
to rear. Incidentally, as the
body was dropped 10cm over
the chassis, the suspension
required minimal ride-height
adjustments to stance The
Snail ‘just so’.
Of course, stance is only half
of the equation, as it takes
the right choice of wheels and
tyres to really hit the mark.
Fortunately, Yudi had the

perfect rims to hand – his own
Yumos-made Fuchs replicas,
which measure 6x15 up front
and 8x15 out back! Fitted with
186/60R15 front and 205/75R15
rear tyres, The Snail not only
looks the part, but also rides
and handles great (well, for a
vehicle of this size, that is!).
The Type 1 motor features
a counterweighted 69mm
crankshaft with 92mm barrels
and pistons, which results in
a capacity of 1835cc. An Engle
W110 camshaft operates a set
of 1.25:1 rockers atop reworked
040 cylinder heads, while the
compression ratio is set at a
sensible 7.5:1. A pair of Weber
ICT carbs supply the fuel while
a CDI ignition kit provides the
spark. Spent exhaust gases
are handled by a Thunderbird
header, which is hooked up to
a pair of Yumos-made stainless
steel silencers that exit via cut-
outs in the rear roll pan.
Incidentally, the engine
bay also houses a leisure
battery and a mains hook-up
distribution unit, which powers
all the interior goodies (whilst
also charging both batteries).
Moving inside The Snail, it
soon becomes clear that this
thing is fully loaded! Yudi had
his carpentry team tackle the
amazing cabinets, interior
panels and trim while his
fabricators handled the rock
and roll bed framework and
also the roof bed supports etc.
The spec is simply amazing
and includes luxuries such as
a microwave, blown heating /
air-con systems, hot and cold
running water, fridges (yes,
more than one!), a champagne-
bucket chiller, a drinks bar
and a whole load of LED

This Bus is a master-class in turning a negative into a positive. We’re sure the owner of the
donor vehicle would be happy to see the remains of their pride and joy, not only roll again,
but be reborn as something as unique, and down right brilliant as The Snail. As you can see,
it takes a heck of a lot of work to build something like this, but we’re glad Yumos did.

digital tacho and oil pressure/
voltmeter gauges. Sitting inside
The Snail, it’s hard to believe
that it was once a Bay window
as the doors, the Safari ’screens
and even the RHD dashboard
(complete with Deluxe-spec
Kienzle clock) are all Split-spec.
Oh, and speaking of the
dashboard, did you spot the
Retro-sound head unit? This
Bluetooth-ready unit controls a
comprehensive sound system,
which includes two amplifiers,
6 component speakers and a
subwoofer. But there’s more…
this cool Camper also includes
two discreet LCD TV screens
(14-in and 17-in), which can be
folded away when not in use.
Yudi explained: “The front
seats are from a modern
Japanese car and the bottom
squabs have been slimmed
down to achieve the correct
seating position.” Working
with a coachtrimmer in
Thailand, Yudi picked a
combination of Saddle-Brown
and cream vinyl for the
seats and cushions, which is
complimented by the mid-
brown square-weave carpet
with cream edging. Meanwhile,
the interior woodwork was
stained and finished with
some neat walnut tops with
aluminium edging and Perspex
covers. And, with some funky
floor tiles and gingham-check
curtains to finish things off,
there’s no denying that this is
one incredibly classy Camper!

cool Bus and a gamble that
really paid off. We need to go
back to January 2014 when I
spotted an advert for the Bus
on the SSVW website…
“The Bus was in Belgium at
the time and the advert was
written in French. The few
photos that accompanied the
post showed a fairly sorry
looking Barndoor Panel Van
that was sat on the floor with
no running gear and lots
of missing parts. I couldn’t
understand much of the
wording of the advert, but my
eagle eyes spotted the early-
style bulkhead and early-style
tool chest area under the seat.
I quickly realised that I was
looking at quite an early 1951
Barndoor, and definitely one
worth saving.
“I made a quick call to my
good friend Stephan, who hails
from Belgium himself, and he
rang the owner on my behalf to
try and buy it.
Pub talk
“The problem is that Belgium
has three official languages,
and a number of local dialects.
Typically, Stephan and the
seller were from different
parts of the country and so
the conversation wasn’t the
easiest. Oh, and I’d caught
Stephan in the pub after work
which muddled things a little
more…
“The end result though was
that my good friend managed
to secure the Bus for less than
I’d suggested trying, and my
wife Mo and I were soon on a

 ferry on our way to Belgium to
bring it back.
“Collecting the Panel Van
was another difficult task, as
I speak little French and the
seller and his father spoke no
English. We managed though,
and soon the Bus was dragged
from the garage, loaded on our
trailer, and we were on our way
home.
Number crunching
“Once we’d got around the
corner from the sellers house I
pulled in and cleaned the VIN
number off that is stamped in
the engine compartment. It
reads 20-12583, which means
it was built in the first week
of May 1951 and that makes it
one of the earliest Barndoors
in the world to be made with a
rear window. What a result!!!
“Nothing else was known
about the history of this

languishing in Belgium, but
that was enough good news
for me.
“The Bus ended up staying
with me for a year, during
which time I sourced some of
the missing parts, including
doors, dash pod, deck lid etc,
and I also got the Bus sitting on
the correct 1951 running gear.
“Sadly, I then decided that
I had too many projects on
the go and sold the Bus to a
very enthusiastic chap called
Craig who spent the next year
or so completing much of the
welding it required.
“Eventually, due to more
changes of circumstance, the
’51 ended up with another
Barndoor enthusiast called Phil
Jones up near Manchester.
“Phil finally got the old
girl on the road, registered,
repainted with “aged” faux-
patina paint, and running on
a lowered Barndoor beam and
Beetle rear end.
“Finally, a deal between
Phil and Paul Irving last year
saw the BD end up in the
Irvs Restos stables where the
period signwriting was applied
before Irv sold the Bus to its
current owner, Andrew.
“It’s had quite a few owners
along the way, but sometimes
that’s how these restorations
go, with each owner adding his
or her mark. At least the Bus is
not only saved and living here
in the UK, but is also out and
about being enjoyed.”
Garage resto
Phil filled us in a little more of
the Bus’s recent history, saying:
“Craig had done a lot of work
to it, but I just did the relevant
welding it needed and finished
it to make it usable. I’m a joiner

by trade but restore VWs as a
hobby. I try to a do a month’s
worth of work in a week with
my cousin Bobby Wilcox (of
Milk and Two renown) - we just
go into the garage, work on
cars and get drunk.
“It was just a bit of a garage
resto on a buckled and
beaten up old Van and I put it
back to Commercial spec as
sympathetically as I could.
“I love BD Panel Vans as
they’re bare bones - as bare as
you can get. I’ve got a Barndoor
Deluxe and they’re just a
different world.
“I finished it and made it
what it was and drove around
in it for about six months. I did
the shows in it and then did a
deal with Irv for another Bus.
It’s been from Dorset to Barrow

in Furness and ended up with
the right people.
It was Irv who added the
period-style livery. He says:
“It’s something people either
love or hate. Some say I
shouldn’t have done it but I
think it adds character. The
sides were so rippled and I
saw an old picture of the logos
and thought it looked brilliant
so decided to experiment by
adding it to the ’51. It adds
character and looks cool and
there’s no other reason for it
than that.”
Detail frenzy
Whatever your thoughts on
this Bus, we think it’s amazing
another Barndoor is out and
about being enjoyed. It has
the obvious cool factor and
the Blah-door / Barn Door ▲ The devil is in

If you’re new to the world of road trippin’ or are perhaps concerned that you’ll
be woefully unprepared for your first European tour, fear not! Here’s our guide
to preparing your VW for an epic adventure and also a handy collection of top
tips to ensure you have everything in place before you hit the road!

very good road trip starts with
a master plan… and we’re
not just talking about a well-
planned route or itinerary–
far more important than that is a
checklist of essential equipment and
a thorough health-check for your VW
Camper, too. Therefore we’ll be listing
some important pre-trip tips before
moving on to a comprehensive guide
to preparing your VW for a major trip
and ending with a handy checklist,
just to make sure you didn’t forget
anything whilst packing!
Paperwork and
documentation
If you’re planning to travel overseas,
you must remember to include
your passport, driving license,
plus your vehicle logbook and
insurance documents, too. Also, a
printed copy of any ferry crossings
and/or pre-booked campsites or
accommodation is important just in
case you have technical issues with
your Smartphone or, heaven forbid,
lose it along the way.
Have you checked that your
insurance covers your needs?
Not all policies cover overseas
travel (without prior notice etc)
and some specify limited travel
periods. Also, many classic/
specialist policies include a limited
mileage clause (and some require
secure overnight parking etc), hence
you should call your insurance
broker / company and explain
your plans before setting off and
assuming you are covered…
You should also keep a list of
useful contact numbers for your
insurance company, breakdown
cover and emergency contacts etc in
the glove box, too.

Trip
Once again, when travelling overseas you need to include some basics
such as a warning triangle, hi-vis jackets for all passengers, spare bulbs /
fuses, roadside breathalyser kits, headlight beam adjusters / stickers, a GB
badge, a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher etc. We’d also suggest you pack
a good quality jack (and check that your spare tyre is in good order), a fairly
comprehensive toolkit and a bag of service items (fanbelt, distributor cap /
rotor arm, points, condenser, ignition leads etc).
And don’t forget some kind of emergency cover (AA / RAC / Green Flag etc),
and be sure to check that your vehicle is fully covered in every country you
visit before you set-off. Oh, and it would make sense to check that you are
covered for recovery to home rather than just ‘to a local garage’ just in case
things go very wrong and you find yourself stranded overseas with a very
broken Camper (and a huge repair bill…).

A well prepared
co-pilot
It may sound stupid, but there’s
nothing worse than finding
yourself lost with a co-pilot that
cannot use a map (and has no
idea where you’re supposed be
anyway!). A proper road trip is
all about good company, and the
right partner / crew will make
life a whole lot easier than trying
to navigate, drive and well, cope
with everything alone!
Before you set off, run through
the plans, take a tour of the
Camper to ensure everyone
knows where to find the
essentials, check the route on
a map together and hand your
trusty co-pilot a spare set of keys
(just in case!).
Money / budget
Whilst it’s difficult to predict
exactly how much your road trip
is likely to cost, you should at
least try to account for fuel, food,
accommodation and related expenses
to cover the entirety of your trip.
And don’t forget to add a decent-
sized contingency / back-up fund to
cover unplanned expenses such as
running repairs, punctures and other
emergencies.
If you’re planning to use a credit or
debit card to cover expenses, be sure
to check that your card is approved /
eligible for overseas travel (in every
country you plan to visit) before
you leave. You should also purchase
enough currency to cover unexpected
issues regarding declined credit cards
and other issues.
Navigation materials
Yes, most people will have either a
GPS or some kind of route-planning
app on a Smartphone, but please
don’t leave home without a proper
map. Sometimes GPS coverage can be
patchy, mobile phone roaming / data
issues crop up and tech can fail (or be
stolen / lost), hence a proper map is
an essential backup.
Incidentally, there are lots of great
apps available for digital devices;
hence it’s well worth researching
things before you set off. And don’t
forget to search for city guides (or
simply purchase some good travel
guides from Amazon!)
Drive smart
If you’re planning to drive through
Europe make sure you look up the
speed limits and road regulations for
each and every country you visit. Also,
if you plan to visit major cities (Paris,
Brussels etc) then you should be
aware that some vehicles may require
a pre-paid ‘sticker’ / may be subject to
an emissions-related charge etc.
And don’t forget to carry some
Euros if you’re likely to use a toll
route (and small change is always
handy for ‘toilet breaks’ – typically 20-
50 cents – at service stations etc).
Medical supplies &
toiletries etc
If you have specific medical
requirements, make sure you have
everything you need before leaving
home. And don’t forget things like
glasses, painkillers, bug repellent (and
cortisone etc for bites), sun cream,
hand sanitizer, travel sickness pills,
antihistamines / hay fever remedies
etc – a well-stocked first aid / medical
kit is essential. And we’ve lost count
of the times we’ve met fellow road
trippers that have simply forgotten
basics such as toothbrush, toothpaste,
soap / shower gel, deodorant or even
a hairbrush…

kitchen towel and tissues (as well as
some plastic bags to contain ‘soiled’
tissues) when packing for your
adventure.
Seasoned travellers never leave
home without a pack of baby wipes
and kitchen/detergent wipes, so
consider those as essentials, too.
And don’t forget washing up liquid,
a sponge, dish cloth / tea towel.
Food and water
Even if you have on-board water
tanks, a good supply of bottled water
is essential. Sure, water-purification
tablets will treat your stored water,
but they can also make your water

Pots, pans, cutlery, bowls
and plates
You don’t need to go crazy, but don’t
overlook items such as a kettle,
saucepan, frying pan, cups/mugs,
plates, bowls and knives, forks and
spoons etc. A simply washing up bowl
is also a great idea!
taste a little ‘bleachy’ hence we
prefer to use the water tanks for
general duties (and stick to bottled
water for hydration purposes).
The subject of food really comes
down to your storage and cooling
options, but we’d certainly suggest
a selection of ‘road snacks’ and
sandwiches as essentials. All too
often people assume that the
weather will be great and therefore
load up a coolbox or fridge with
BBQ perishables, however, if the
weather is terrible or you find
yourself at the side of the road and
unable to use the BBQ you packed,
then a selection of tinned food and
dried products (rice, pasta, noodles
etc) could just save the day (And
don’t forget the tea, coffee, sugar
and dried milk, too).

Things to do
A football or Frisbee can be fun in the sun, but don’t
forget to pack playing cards, colouring books, board
games, books/magazines etc, just in case it rains.
Portable DVD players, iPads / tablets, laptops and
MP3 players are a great idea, but make sure you pack
the necessary chargers and cables for any electrical
accessories (and make sure you don’t run your vehicle
battery flat when powering/recharging all that tech…).
Oh, and a good range of MP3 playlists (or CDs etc) is a
great idea, as everyone loves a road trip sing-along!
And don’t forget to pack a camera and spare memory
cards / batteries so that you can upload your highlights to
social media when you get home…
Torches, lamps, tape, rope
and all that stuff
It can be dark on a campsite in the
middle of the night so make sure that
you pack not only lanterns / lamps
but also a few torches (head torches
are great if you’re trying to change
a tyre at the side of the road in the
middle of the night). Other essentials
include cable ties, rope / string, a good
knife, a rubber mallet and pegs (if you
have an awning etc).
This subheading could also cover
items such as camping chairs, table(s)
and awnings/gazebos (useful both for
shade from the sun AND shelter from
the rain)
Wet / cold weather gear
Shorts, flip-flops and T-shirts are
great in the summer, but don’t forget
to pack comfortable walking shoes,
wellington boots, a poncho / rain
coat and a few sweatshirts, hats and
even blankets for those chillier nights
around the fire!
Suitable clothes
Comfortable clothing is far more
important than fashion when you’re
travelling, so think carefully when
packing for your road trip. Our top
tip is to pack light, but cover all bases
– hot weather, cold weather, wet
weather etc, and don’t forget to pack
underwear, too!
A woolly hat and gloves are as
important as sunglasses and a sun
hat, so take time out to consider
all options (and remember, you can
always wash / dry clothes on the go).
Be prepared (for
unexpected stops!)
Include some leeway for a little sight-
seeing or the occasional adventure /
stop-off. Plan an element of flexibility
into every stretch of your adventure
and avoid trying to cover more miles
than you’re likely to achieve. The
last thing you need is a stressful or
demanding schedule. A road trip
should be relaxed and enjoyable.
Sleep tight
Air beds, sleeping bags, pillows,
blankets, duvets… (You’d be amazed
just how many times we’ve met
people that have forgotten the
sleeping essentials!)
ROAD TRIP Preparation
Before you set off on a road trip,
consider the condition of your trusty
steed, as the last thing you need is a
string of breakdowns! If you’re not
very mechanically minded, perhaps
you should consider booking the
Camper in with your preferred
mechanic for a check-over or, if you’re
looking for a little peace of mind and
confidence in your beloved Camper,
you could look into attending one
of the excellent T2D Boot Camp
weekends, which will not only help
you to understand how your VW
works, but will also teach you enough
to fix minor issues along the way…
after all, little bit of knowledge can go
a long way.
But, if you have a basic
understanding of things, here are
some pre-trip tips…
Front end first
Make some basic external checks to
ensure that nothing is loose. We’re
talking about bumpers, roof racks,
hubcaps and even wheels. Yep, pull
the hubcaps off and check that all
your wheel nuts are tight and, if your
Type 2 has the early, wide 5 drum
brakes, then grab a torch and just
peer through the inspection holes
in the front of the brake drums to
make sure there’s material on your
brake linings (screeching brakes
after 50 miles would be a major
inconvenience!). If yours is a later
mode, the inspection holes are behind
the wheels hence you will have to
crawl underneath and remove the
dust plugs to peer inside the brakes).
If you have discs on the front (or rear),
then the brake pads should be easy
enough to see – if any of them look
low, fix the brakes before you leave!
Steering
If you haven’t already, now is a good
time to jack the Bus up and check
each corner at a time. Up front you
should listen for grinding or noise
when you spin the wheels and the
wheels should spin freely, of course.
Grab the wheel a 6- and 12-o-clock
and try rocking it back and forth.
Excessive movement could be a
simple case of adjusting the wheel
bearings but it could be a sign of
Tyres
Next check the condition of your tyres – and not
just the tread! Cracks and splits in tyre side walls
are not uncommon on a heavyweight Camper…
in fact, if you were really being picky, you should
also check that the tyres are load-rated for a
vehicle of this size and weight.

Let’s start with
the easy stuff…
Grab a friend and check that all
your lights are in good working
order and fix any issues before you
leave. Also, pick up some spare
bulbs and, while you’re at it, some
bullet fuses, too (as something as
simple as a blown fuse could leave
you stranded in the dark!).

grease gun (this may be a job for a
mechanic as not many garages even
sell them any more!), then now is
probably a good time to ‘grease your
nipples’ on the front beam and also
the king- and link-pins, too.
Next, try moving the steering from
lock to lock – if you hear any clonks or
detect excessive movement, it’s time
to check out the steering joints and
also the centre pivot on the beam. If
all seem good, it’s time to check the
steering box for play – this is a bit
beyond pre-road trip fixes though,
and is more likely to be something
your MoT tester or mechanic might
have mentioned if there were some
signs of wear etc.
While you have a torch in hand,
visually inspect things such as the
brake hoses (for splits / cracks or even
signs of contact with wheels etc) and,
if you have a basic tool kit to hand,
it certainly wouldn’t hurt to just
check that the various nuts and bolts
(dampers, etc) are all snug.

Around the back
Moving to the rear, we’re checking for
much the same kind of stuff as the
front (wheel bolts, tyres, brake wear,
bearing play etc) and also leaks from
the rear hubs (behind the wheel) etc.
If you see any transmission fluid leaks
at the hubs (swing-axle vehicles),
then you need to replace those seals
and possibly the rear brake linings (as
the fluid often penetrates the linings
as it runs down from the hub) before
you leave. Check the condition of the
axle gaiters, too (at the other end of
the axle tubes / where the axle meets
the transmission). If these are split of
Fluids
If you think your vehicle may be low on transmission fluid, now is the time
to top it up. The filler plug / screw is on the side of the gearbox and if you
can feel the oil just below the level of the plug when you poke a finger
inside, you’re in good shape, however, if you can’t feel any transmission
fluid, then you should fill it until it reaches around 5mm below the level
of the filler plug. If you want to drain the fluid (not a bad idea, as you can
keep an eye out for ‘shimmering metallic particles (like glittery oil!) or tell-
tale metal debris, but again, this is perhaps something to add to your next
major service rather than just before a holiday.
If your Type 2 has an IRS rear end (i.e. equipped with CV joints rather
than straight axles), then you can visually check for damage to the CV
boots and also ensure that all of the fixing bolts are tight (and in place!).
The easiest way to check for extremely worn CVs is to find a large car park
and drive the van (slowly) at full lock. If you hear any clicking or clunking
noises (maybe have your friend sit in the rear and listen carefully), then it
might be time to change those CV joints.
Have a look at the dampers etc and, if you can see the clutch cable
conduit (above the gearbox) with your torch, just keep an eye out for a
frayed cable. And, if you spot washers and /or nuts beneath the clutch
cable adjusting screw, then you may be looking at a previous owners ‘quick
fix’ for a stretched cable.
Check things such as heat exchanger cables (i.e. do they operate the
flaps correctly?) heater hoses and also the exhaust system for leaks.

here is to treat your Camper to a
proper service and tune up before
you set off on any adventure. We
won’t go into detail covering DIY
servicing here (maybe we’ll cover
that in a future article though),
but you should first start with a
visual inspection for oil leaks etc.
Inside the engine bay should be
dry, however common problem
areas include the breather hose
(next to the oil filler cap), which
should be connected and fitted with
hose clamps, and also the areas
around the dipstick and behind
the crankshaft pulley. Excessive
oil around the pulley / dipstick
by (excessive pressure inside the
case caused by worn piston rings
etc). While you’re looking at the
pulley, try pulling it back and forth
– if you detect noticeable movement
(referred to as excessive end-float),
this is also a sign of a worn / high-
mileage engine BUT that doesn’t
necessarily mean that your engine
is about to expire! If your engine
runs well, has decent oil pressure
and isn’t losing or burning lots of
oil, it may well go on for many years.
However, if you’re concerned, we’d
certainly suggest having a reputable
VW garage check it out (if only for
peace of mind before you set off).
Peering beneath the engine you’re

leaking, then you should have them

replaced (as it will eventually lead to
low transmission fluid and potential
gearbox damage, not to mention a
messy leak).
It’s not uncommon to find leaks
(and wheel /bearing movement) on
reduction boxes (as fitted to Split-
screen models) and if your Bus is a
little ‘moist’ in this area, then it would
certainly be worth at least topping up
the reduction box fluid and keeping
an eye out for future leaks.
However, many Campers today
have been modified with straight-
axle conversions (i.e. the removal of
the reduction boxes, which lowers
the vehicle) or via an IRS conversion
(using parts from a later, Bay window
vehicle), hence reduction box issues
are only a concern for stock Splits.
ROAD TRIP Preparation

caused by a leaking rear main oil
seal (also common in vehicles with
excessive end float, as mentioned
above). If you spot a lot of oil here,
it might be worth having the seal
replaced before you leave, as heavy
leaks can penetrate the clutch disc
and cause slippage, not to mention a
worrying loss of oil, too!
Check around the oil sump plate
and drain plug as well as the rocker
covers (there’s one on each cylinder
head i.e. the far left/right of the
motor!). Fixes here are relatively
quick and easy to fix so don’t panic if
you spot a little seepage.
Inside the engine bay you should
next check that the foam/rubber
engine bay seal between the body and
the engine tinware is in place. If it’s
split or sections are missing, then you
risk allowing hot air from beneath the
motor to make its way into the engine
bay and lead to overheating.
Next, how about the air hoses
and pipes, is everything where it
should be and in tact? Pay particular
attention to the fuel pipes and hoses
and ensure that there is a proper fuel
pipe clip or jubilee clip at every join.
Check the clips and hoses are tight
and that they are not cutting into
the hoses and be sure to take a close
look at the entire length of each fuel
pipe – checking they are not brittle, engine (rather than the radio, for

do is to make you worry or question the reliability of your VW (hey, these
things are famously reliable!) hence, if you have any concerns or questions
we’d suggest enlisting the help of VW workshop, who will be happy to check
things over and prepare your beloved VW for a problem-free road trip and a
summer of adventures!

both myself, and this magazine as a result.
The last time we featured this family-run workshop
was back in 2013, so it’s high time we checked in
again to show what’s new in their world. We spoke
to father and son Alan and Phil Sutton, and the rest
of the crew, wife Chris and daughter Kate, fabricator
and body man Simon Meakin and apprentice
Jordan to get the low down.

So, what’s been happening lately?

Lots of the same really. We’re now in our eleventh
year of trading but we’ve still got the same drive
and passion that we’ve always had. The workshop
has changed a bit since the last time we were in
the magazine. We’ve expanded to give us more
room and create dedicated areas. On the one side
we have the bodyshop and final assembly areas
- the clean zone - and on the other we have our
fabrication and mechanical side, where we carry out
all of the messier work.

We’re always investing money back into the

own panels quicker than we used to, which speeds
up the fabrication work. It means we can produce
things like our own rear lower quarters and upper
roof corners for Buses. We’ve a new bead roller so
we can make pressings for floor sections, tubs and
bespoke panels from scratch. Being able to work
quicker has the advantage of passing on a better
job, and savings to the customers.

MoT work right the way up to a full nut and bolt

A lot of people think we’re just about the body,
prep, paint and restoration side of things but we
also do interior fitting and all aspects of trim work.
Plus, we also carry out a lot of mechanical work. We
have a two-post lift and all the equipment to do
whatever you need, like lowering and suspension
work, brake upgrades, wiring and service work. We
enjoy a steady flow of smaller jobs coming and it’s
something we enjoy and are keen to do more of.

Pretty much. Dad (Alan) has always been a petrol
head and hot rod lover and I (Phil) developed a

Philadelphia, USA. Its speciality was supercharging,
and doing so on VWs was something it proved
rather good at.
The Judson family became involved with
engineering in the 1880s, although back in those
pre-Volkswagen days, it was focussed on farming
machinery. But, as technology advanced, so did
Judson’s interest, eventually encompassing infra-
red detectors, engine synchronisers, aviation and
aerospace products and even parts for missiles and
satellites. It also built its own engines early in the
20th century, under the names Judson-Wood and
Judson-Stover.
It was William Haddon Judson, born in 1914,
who was responsible for developing superchargers,
aided by his brother Charles Avery Judson.
William was the inventor and engineer, Charles
was responsible for the PR and administration of
their family firm. Initially named Judson Brothers,
it changed its name to the Judson Research and
Manufacturing Company in the early 1950s and
started marketing sliding vane-type superchargers
for Ford V8s and British MGs.
In 1956, Judson came up with a supercharger for
another popular European import, Volkswagens.
These were then flooding into the USA in
ever-increasing numbers and Judson’s new
product proved an instant hit with owners. What
distinguished it from the many other mechanical
modifications available was how easy it was to fit
- more or less bolt-on, with a little expertise - plus

its very affordable price tag. The
advertising was pretty good too, OF

carried out by the Williams and
Avery Advertising Company - which
was just the two brothers by another
name. It appealed to owners wanting
a bit more pep in their performance
and would help Judson achieve a market
dominance envied by its rivals. Some ads referred
to ‘Super Beetles’ well before the advent of
the 1302 and 1303 models, while others lured
customers with alleged ‘hair-on-the-chest’
performance. Tempting indeed. The brochures
weren’t always strictly truthful, with some of the
first ones for Volkswagens proclaiming ‘thousands
of happy owners’, even though the supercharger
kits had only just been launched. Still, advertising
standards were a bit more lax back then.
The success of the Volkswagen supercharger,
along with Judson’s range for other European
models from MG, Triumph, Austin-Healey, Renault,
Mercedes and Renault, allowed it to open a new
factory in Conshohocken, to cope with increased
demand. That said, employee numbers never
exceeded 10, although there was a hard work
ethic with a rule of no talking except at breaks
and William often telling staff to ‘put the cigarette
down; I’m paying you for two hands, not one!’
Judson sold its devices direct from this plant
to owners, as well as via specialist retailers. It

was less successful than we’d hoped.

on success and sales prices – the winter months, especially the
run-up to Christmas and January are the worst times to try and
sell a vehicle by any method. Take our results as a lesson and,
if you can, plan ahead for a Spring or Summer sale.
There are several classic car auctioneers in the UK. At the
end of this how-to, there are several companies listed in most
areas of the UK – proximity to where you live will likely be a
factor in your decision, as transport costs may be prohibitive
otherwise. As we are based in Southsea on the south coast, we
chose to sell at a Barons auction at Sandown Park in Surrey –
home of the VolksWorld Show.
It goes without saying that you should carefully read through
the fees and costs section of any auctioneer’s website and
don’t be afraid to clarify things with the auctioneers by phone
if there’s anything you’re

Guide price
The guide price actually has no real link to the actual price that
it will sell for at auction. Auctioneers are a little sneaky when
it comes to guide prices, as they like to keep guide prices on

that prospective bidders won’t see your reserve price before
bidding, so a higher reserve won’t put buyers off like a high
guide price will. This being said, the auctioneer you are using
will advise you on what they think the guide price and reserve
should be but do feel free to stick to your guns and go with
your gut.
When it comes to figuring out your reserve price and guide
prices, it can be helpful to go through details of past auctions
and viewing online pricing and results – this will give you an
idea of historical results.
07 Promote on social media
Although each auctioneer has their own ways of
promoting their sale and the vehicles that are being sold, it
can’t harm matters to do some of your own promo stuff on
the internet in the run-up to the sale. If you think about it,
just one extra person at an auction can make the difference
between a bidding war and great selling price, or a no sale.
If you have your own social media channels, or some friends
on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter then it’s good to get some
pictures and the sale date out there.
A word of caution: Here’s where communication about
explicit details with the auctioneer pays dividends. In our case,
we didn’t realise that Barons would be putting up a classified
listing on eBay for the reserve price, so we did our own. What
this resulted in, was two virtually identical eBay classified
listings for the same Bus but with different prices and seller
details. The problem with this is that people are all too aware
of internet scammers and this may have affected the credibility
of our Westy – we’ll never know for sure, but it definitely might
have put some people off attending or bidding.

 10 Auction sales – How it works
When it comes to your Bus being sold, it will likely be
presented on a TV screen next to the auctioneer’s podium.
On the podium itself will be the auctioneer in the centre, with
other staff members to the side, who will be dealing with
internet and phone bidders and communicating this to the
auctioneer.
When it came to the sale of our Westy, unfortunately, there
were some issues; not only was the Barons website down for
internet bidders on the day of the auction, but someone also
forgot to change the TV screen over from the previous lot,
which doubtless led to some bidder confusion. Although the
Westy got bids up to £21,500 it didn’t meet reserve.
If your vehicle doesn’t meet reserve, sometimes a bidder
will approach the auctioneers and try to make a deal. What

There are a couple of options when it comes to actually
