Artifact #2: Literacy Parent Newsletter

This artifact shows my ability to create a form of communication between teacher and

parent(s) or guardians. The literacy parent newsletter artifact was designed with the intention of

having a means of communication with teachers and parents. The communication between home

and school environment is critical to student success. In the newsletter, parents learned about the

reading program that the students have been participating in. Parents were also aware of the

weekly word wall words that students work with along with dates to remember, homework for

the week, and additional literacy resources that can be used to help their children.

The importance of literacy within the home is also crucial to their success as it allows

students to succeed at school in various subject areas. Teachers and parents need to collaborate

together to ensure their children are getting the most of their time reading together and

completing tasks. This monthly newsletter is used to increase communication and allows parents

to stay in the loop with what their children are learning. This also allows the opportunity for

parents to extend their children’s learning by continuing the work at home.

Connections to Standards

INTASC Standards

Standard #10: Leadership and Collaboration

“The teacher seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility

for students learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school

professionals, and community members to ensure learner growth, and to advance the

profession.”

expectations and ongoing communication to support learner development and achievement.

NYS Code of Ethics for Educators

Principle 5: Educators collaborate with parents and community, building trust and

respecting confidentiality.

Educators partner with parents and other members of the community to enhance school

programs and to promote student learning. They also recognize how cultural and linguistic

heritage, gender, family and community shape experience and learning. Educators respect the

private nature of the special knowledge they have about students and their families and use that

knowledge only in the students’ best interests. They advocate for fair opportunity for all children.

The Ontario Ethical Teacher Standards

Trust: The ethical standard of Trust embodies fairness, openness and honesty. Members’

professional relationships with students, colleagues, parents, guardians and the public are based

on trust.
