Course Objectives
ME203.CEO.6:To design solid and hollow circular shafts for mechanical systems.
Course Outcomes
ME203.CO.1: To recall the fundamental concepts including static equilibrium, geometry of deformation,
and material constitutive behavior
ME203.CO.2: To explain the concept of resistance, deformation and different stresses
ME203.CO.3: To use concept and formulae of Bending and Shear stress in beams and other structures
for solving numerical
ME203.CO.4:To compare shear forces and bending moments for different beams under various loads.
ME203.CO.5: To check and suggest suitable material for given structure
ME203.CO.6:To design solid and hollow circular shafts for mechanical systems.
Theory:
Normal & shear stresses on any oblique plane. Concept of principal planes, derivation of
expression for principal stresses & maximum shear stress, position of principal planes & planes
of maximum shear. Graphical solution using Mohr’s circle of stresses. Principal stresses in shaft
subjected to torsion, bending moment & axial thrust (solid as well as hollow), Concept of
equivalent torsional and bending moments.
Theories of elastic failure: Maximum principal stress theory, maximum shear stress theory,
maximum distortion energy theory, maximum principal strain theory, maximum strain energy
theory – their applications & limitations.
Unit 3. Shear Force & Bending Moment (6 Hrs.)
Shear forces & bending moment for statically determinate beams due to concentrated loads,
uniformly distributed loads, uniformly varying loads & couples, Relationship between rate of
loading, shear force and bending moment. Positions of point of contra shear & positions of
points of contra flexure.

Unit 4.Bending Stress and Shear Stress in Beams
Relation between BM & slope, slope & deflection of determinate beams, standard loading cases
using Macaulay’s method and Moment Area method, deflection due to shear.
Buckling of columns: Concept of buckling of columns, Euler’s formula for buckling load for
column with hinged ends, concept of equivalent length for various end conditions, Limitations of
Euler’s formula, Rankine’s formula ( Only theoretical treatment)
Stresses, strain & deformations in determinate shafts of solid & hollow, homogeneous &
composite circular cross section subjected to twisting moment, derivation of torsion equation,
stresses due to combined torsion, bending & axial force on shafts. Strain energy due to bending
and torsion
Computational methods for stresses and strains
Introduction, Stress and Equilibrium, Boundary Condition, Strain – Displacement Relations,
Stress-Strain Relation, Potential Energy and Equilibrium: - Rayleigh-Ritz Method, Galerkin‘s
Method.
Finite Element Modeling -One Dimensional Problem, Assembly of Global Stiffness Matrix and
Load Vector, Properties of Stiffness Matrix, Finite Element Equations.
Introduction to Strain gauges.
Practical/Tutorial:
Tension test for ductile and brittle material on Universal Testing Machine.
Determination of stresses in beams for different end conditions using strain gauges.
Computational stress analysis of (1D) axially loaded structural member using any FEA software.
OR
Shear force and bending moment diagrams for beams with different end conditions.
Note: Practical No 3 from both Part B and Part C should be performed by Project Based Learning (PBL)
