Consonances: Unison, 3rd, 5th, 8va, and intervals made up of these and the octave

Perfect: Unison, 5th, 8va


Imperfect: 3rd, 6th

Dissonances: 2nd, 4th, diminished 5th, tritone, 7th, and the intervals made up of these and the octave

Three motions:
direct: parts go in same direction
contrary: when one part ascend, the other descend, vice versa
oblique: one part moves, the other remains stationary

4 fundamental rules for motions:


I. perfect → perfect = contrary / oblique
II. perfect → imperfect = direct / contrary / oblique
III. imperfect → perfect = contrary / oblique
IV. imperfect → imperfect = direct / contrary / oblique

Points to note:
● Contraty & oblique should be used as often as possible
● imperfect > perfect
● begining & ending must be perfect
● If 2nd last bar is in lower part → Major 6th
● If 2nd last bar is in upper part → Minor 3rd
● counterpoint must be in the same mode as the cantus firmus
