Overview

Topic: Importance of Cross Cultural Training

Setting: 803rd Quartermaster Company

Audience: Soldiers of the 803rd Quartermaster Company

Focus Statement

In our society it is common to work with people from different cities, states and countries.

Knowing how to work with people from a different background than you can improve not only

your social relations but can increase your knowledge of a new culture, as well as ensuring that

the work environment is civil and operations run smoothly. Cultural appreciation and awareness

is important in a work setting in order to ensure all employees are treated with respect and trust

amongst each other.

Instructional Objectives

 Participants will be able to list 2 benefits of working with someone from another culture

when asked to do so from the presenter.

 Participants will be able to demonstrate how to politely introduce their self to someone

new to the country when asked to do so from the presenter.

 Participants will identify 2 issues one may face when visiting a new country when asked

to do so by the presenter.
 Participants will discuss experiences they have had working with foreigners in a small

group discussion.

Content Outline

 Discussion (5 minutes)

1. Begin by discussing benefits of working with people of different nationalities and

cultural backgrounds.

2. Have audience then discuss with the person to their left and right about their own

ideas of working with people of different nationalities and cultural backgrounds.

3. Select three to four participants to list two benefits. (Encourage participants to say

something different from previous answers.)

 PowerPoint (15 minutes)

1. Open the floor and ask the audience what cross cultural training is or means to

them.

2. Discuss the importance of cross cultural training from a military and civilian

perspective.

3. Ask participants to estimate how many immigrants they believe are currently in

the U.S.

4. Ask participants to guess which country the U.S has the most immigrants from.

5. Discuss food restrictions some countries/religions may have compared to

Americans. (I.e. pork, fish, meat in general.)

 Small Group Discussions (5 minutes)

1. Ask the audience to break up in to groups of 4-5.

2. Have small groups identify a speaker for the group.


3. Give the audience 2 minutes to discuss how to introduce themselves to someone

from a different culture/country.

4. After two minutes is up, have speakers from each group “introduce themselves”

to the presenter. (Encourage participants to say something different from previous

answers.)

 Check On Learning (5 minutes)

1. Ask what Cross Cultural Training is.

2. Ask what possible reasons immigrants may come to America for are.

3. Ask the importance of Cross Cultural Training.

 Closing Discussion (5 minutes)

1. Ask participants to identity issues one may face when coming to America from

another country.

2. Ask participants in the audience to share their experiences they have had working

with someone from another country, or working in another country.
