Introduction

1 INTRODUCTION
REFCON enables an operator to automatically monitor and control thousands of reefer containers through a
single computer system. This makes REFCON the ideal solution wherever complete monitoring of reefer
containers is required – whether on board a vessel or in a container terminal.

REFCON is an integral reefer container monitoring system, which uses the reefer container’s own power
cable to transmit data between the container and the computer monitoring system on the vessel or in a
container terminal.

Modern reefer containers are controlled by a micro-processor which, sends and receives information via a
modem installed inside the container. The modem uses the power line to communicate with the master
modem installed on the vessel or terminal. The master modem passes data between the power line and the
computer monitoring system using RS 485 protocol.

REFCON is a reefer containers monitoring system based on the ISO-10368 standard. The standard
specifies a method for the reefers containers and REFCON to communicate using the power cables. The
method is called Power Cable Transmission (PCT) and is a high frequency signal transmission.

The two main hardware components of the system are the computer running the REFCON application and
the modem substations (REFCON Substation) that collect data from the reefers via the power cables. The
two system components are usually connected via a serial RS485 network, but other types of network like
LAN, fibre and wireless can be used.

The REFCON PC is usually connected to the customer LAN, giving access to valuable information and
control. One of the benefits is that many users (client PC’s) can operate REFCON at the same time.

Even though most reefers have the communication modems installed some reefers, usually old, do not have
the ability to communicate via the power cables. Using the handheld device option, the REFCON Data
Collector (RDC), it is possible for REFCON to monitor any reefer container that is unable to communicate via
the power cables. Simply download the desired reefer containers to the handheld RDC, and use the list to
examine the relevant condition data, thus avoiding pen and paper for manual inspection. The RDC comes
with a docking station, which automatically transfers all new data into REFCON.

This document describes the hardware parts of your REFCON system. You will in general find:

 System specifications and requirements.

 Functional descriptions.
 Installation instructions.
 Wiring diagrams and specifications of hardware settings.

Further information and specific details are listed on the homepage, myrefcon.com

System Requirements

2 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
As a general rule all installations have to be according to highest industrial standard.
Further information and specific details are listed on the homepage, myrefcon.com

Cables
All cables have to fit the situation mechanically, environmentally and electrically. Requirements
 All RS485 cables should be in accordance to an approved international RS485 standard, but with
2
minimum 0,5mm wire gauge and total cable length less than 1000 meters.
 All LAN cables should be in accordance to an approved international LAN standard.

EM Noise Limits
As the REFCON system and the reefers use high frequency signals to communicate on the power cables it
is essential that electrical noise on the power grid is limited.
 It is required that the noise on the power grid is within limits specified in the TC104/SC2/WG1
standard.

3 SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS
The system specifications describe the particular REFCON system and its components. The chapter starts
with a system overview drawing explaining the interconnection of main components. A more detailed
description of the interconnection of peripheral equipments then follows. The chapter closes with a
description of all particular system components including wiring diagrams and installation details.

Configurations Table

RMM Master DIP Switch Node Settings

REFCON Substations include RMM masters that require unique addresses. These
addresses are referred to as nodes and have to be preset before use. Each RMM
master has an 8 pole dip switch that is used to code the node settings. The rocker
switches are numbered with a label from 1 to 8. The rocker switch is ON when the
rocker end facing the numbers is in downward position. It is common practice to
denote the ON position as 1 and the OFF position as 0.
The example on the left shows the dip switch coded to node 25 (10011001).

Inductive Signal Coupler for new building – ISC35NB

(7801-001)

Description
The Inductive Signal Coupler (ISC) is designed
to inject and tab the data signals from power
distribution cables in ISO 10368 reefer container
monitoring systems.
The power cable is fed through the hole in the
ISC. This must be done before mounting the end
of the cable.

- Designed for new installations

- No galvanic connection to power cable
- Designed to be stripped directly to the power cable – but can also be mounted on walls or mounting plates which
are parallel with the power cable
-Cable length 2m
- Equipped with standard RJ45 connector at the end of the cable for easy installation
- Inner diameter of 37 mm to accept most common power cables
- Housing resistive to oil mist
- Designed for both low data rate and high data rate systems

RMM Master mkIII and mkIV

Introduction

This document is a common description of the latest versions of the RMM Master Modem manufactured by
YORK Marine, Controls. The description is formed as a datasheet containing both a verbal description of the
unit and technical data.

Description

The RMM Master Modem is a dual datarate powerline master modem designed for remote reefer container
monitoring systems. The RMM Master Modem serves as data transfer media between a central host
computer (the REFCON server PC) and remote monitoring modems located at the reefer containers.

Note 1: The output impedance is defined as the load varies between 220 and 18. As the load becomes lower than 18, the output
impedance increases to protect the output amplifier from overload.
Note 2: The output impedance is defined as the load varies between 3k and (15+j15). As the load becomes lower than (15+j15), the output impedance increases to protect the output amplifier from overload.

LED indicators
POWER Green LED, indicating that power is supplied to the unit.
RESET Red LED lights up if an internal HW Reset occurs.
ACTIVITY Green/Yellow LED, flashing when High/Low Data Rate activity is detected at the powerline.
Green: High Data Rate activity. Yellow: Low Data Rate activity.
RMM Master MkIV only:
If the ACTIVITY LED flashes yellow regularly while the USER LED shows EPROM mode
(slow flash), it indicates that software download is in progress.
TRANSMIT Green/Yellow LED, flashing when High/Low Data Rate is transmitted over the powerline.
Green: High Data Rate transmission. Yellow: Low Data Rate transmission.
USER Green LED, flashing controlled by software. Slow flashing indicates EPROM mode, ready
for download or downloading. Fast flashing: The application is running.
RS485 Green/Yellow LED, flashing when the UART is receiving/transmitting data.
Green: RS485 RxD. Yellow: RS485 TxD.
