21 KEYS TO HEALTH AND

HEALING-PARTS -1 and 2
Introduction

I mentioned last week that there are 21 keys to

staying healthy and restoring health. I will do
some detailed teaching as the weeks go on. But
here are some thoughts and suggested readings
on the subjects

I have included the web links to each one for

convenient use.
Here’s what I want each of you to do:

a. Please look up each subject

b. Take notes on how each one of these keys
work to preserve health and promote
healing. For example, “Water hydrates the
tissues and lowers or regulates body
temperature. Therefore, water is vital to
maintain health because it keeps us from
overheating. This includes the overheating
factors of inflammation.”
c. Think of a case where a key would help
you or someone whom you know
d. Write it down. You should have a wide
ruled notebook with a flexible or spiral
spine for easy access and carry for class.
You will need more than one as time goes
on.

Second Class-Theories of Medicine
Introduction
Every culture and age has theories of
medicine. In order for us to understand
natural healing, we must understand the
various theories of healing and health over
the ages.
There are Three Main Areas of Civilization
that influences our methods of healing. There
are certainly more than that, such as the
Native American Healing Cultures but these
Big Three are the ones that helped shape
medicine in our cultures the most. We will
study the Native traditional healing in the
fall.

THE WESTERN PHYSICAL

SYSTEMS
-21ST CENTURY
Western Medicine- Old School
This theory originated with the famous
Hippocrates of the Greeks. Later, others
developed further, in particular-
Aelius Galenus 129 AD – c. 200/c. 216),
(aka) Galen of Pergamon:
Greek physician, surgeon and philosopher
The system was called Galenism and dominated
all Western Medicine for over a thousand years.
This system of medicine focused on "Humors", those fluids
affected by the emotions and the thoughts:
Temperament
Humou Elemen Qualitie Ancient Temperamen

hopeful,
Blood spring air liver and sanguis sanguine

Black gallbladde cold and melaina quiet,
autumn earth melancholic
bile r dry kholé analytical,

calm,
brain/lung cold and phlégm thoughtful,
Phlegm winter water phlegmatic
s moist a patient,

Blood[+] FIRE
The blood was believed to be produced exclusively by the liver and gave someone
courage.
Yellow bile[+] AIR
Excess of yellow bile from the spleen was thought to produce aggression, and
excess anger reciprocally gave rise to liver derangement and imbalances in the
humors.
Black bile[+] EARTH
The word "melancholy" derives from Greek μέλαινα χολή (melaina kholé)
meaning 'black bile', from the belief that an excess of black bile caused depression
from the gallbladder.
Phlegm[+] WATER
Phlegm was thought to be associated with apathetic behavior, as preserved in the
word "phlegmatic" from the brain and the lungs.

MODERN EUROPEAN BASED MEDICINE:

The flow of the energy was linear like an arrow.
Once the Doctrine of Humors was discredited in the late 1700’s, a new theory
based upon mechanical science arose in its place. The foremost person behind this
idea was Rene Descartes (Ran Nay Day Cart). He proposed the famous
saying, “Cogito Ergo Sum” I think, therefore I am.
Rene Descartes (1596-1650)
Descartes was a good man who was highly ethical and passionate about reason. He
was also a devout Christian who reconciled Faith and Science quite easily. He did
not believe that smart people were better than others and he understood that the
human intellect was limited but useful.
However, while his idea that the human existence can be proven by our ability to
reason has led to a lot of breakthroughs and heartache, it also brings in the idea that
intellect is the basis for reality and self worth. What happens if YOUR thinking
style or speed doesn’t measure up to the level society proposes? Are you then less
than human? If you cannot think, do you even exist?
We can now see why so much of modern medicine:
1. Dismisses life after death. If we ARE our brains, we must cease to exist once
the brain stops.
2. Argues for “pulling the plug” once the brain has died.
3. Terminates unwanted unborn children before birth since their brain activity
cannot be accurately measured
Modern Medicine also thinks in terms of the body as a machine. If one part wears
out, just put in another one.

MODERN WESTERN MEDICINE IS INFLUENCED BY OLDER THOUGHT, EVEN

IN SOMETHING LIKE DNA AND RNA

These 12 Systems are the outward, material

expressions of you as a person. These are
expressions of your unique DNA and RNA
WHAT IS DNA
"Deoxyribonucleic acid is a molecule that carries
the genetic instructions used in the growth,
development, functioning and reproduction of all
known living creatures"
This is the physical components of your JING
Chi-the stuff you got from your ancestors
expressed in physical cells.

Our Ancestors knew the symbol for it as the same symbol for the cycle of
life: Ancient Egyptian Neh-Eh Symbol for “Eternity”
The European Symbol for Infinity-Moebius Strip
-No Beginning and No End

RNA or ribonucleic acid acts as a messenger

between DNA and the protein synthesis complexes
known as ribosomes, forms vital portions of ribosomes,
and acts as an essential carrier molecule for amino acids
to be used in protein synthesis.

DNA says Let there be cells and RNA connects the

proteins that makes the cells. DNA-RNA-

TWELVE SYSTEMS OF THE BODY

These are a system of parts (organs) by which the body functions.
Let’s look at them all in detail

1)Integumentary System
Components: Skin and associate structures, such as
hair, fingernails and toenails, sweat glands, and oil
glands

FUNCTIONS: Protects body: helps regulate body

temperature; eliminates some waters; helps make
vitamin D; detects sensations such as touch, pain,
warmth, and cold

2) Skeletal System
Components: Bones and joints of the body and their
associated cartilages.
FUNCTIONS: Supports and protects body: provides
surface area for muscle attachments; aides body
movements; houses cells that produce blood cells;
stores minerals,lipids
3) Muscular System
Components: Specifically, skeletal muscle tissue--
muscle usually attached to bones (other muscle
tissue include smooth and cardiac) and Tendons.

Function: Participates in body movements, such as

walking; maintains posture, produces heat

4) Nervous System
Components: Brain, spinal cord, nerves, and spinal
sense organs, such as eyes and ears

FUNCTIONS: Generates action potentials (nerve

impulses) to regulate body activities; detects changes
in body's internal and external environments,
interprets changes, and responds by causing
muscular contractions or glandular secretion
5) Endocrine System
Components: Hormone-producing glands--pineal
gland, hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thymus, thyroid
gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, pancreas,
ovaries and testes--and hormone-producing cells in
several other organs.
FUNCTIONS: Regulates body activities by releasing
hormones (chemical messengers transported in blood
from endocrine gland or tissue to target organ.
6) Cardiovascular System
Components: Blood, heart and blood vessels: veins
and arteries
FUNCTIONS: Heart Pumps blood through blood
vessels; blood carries oxygen and nutrients to cells
and carbon dioxide and waste away from cells and
helps regulate acid-base balance, temperature and
water content of body fluids; blood components help
defend against disease and repair damaged blood
vessels.

7) Lymphatic System
Components: Lymphatic fluid and vessel;
FUNCTIONS: Returns proteins and fluid to blood
carries lipids from gastrointestinal tract to blood;
8) Immunity System
Components: spleen, thymus, lymph nodes and
tonsils; cells that carry out immune responses (B
cells, T cells and others).
FUNCTIONS: contains sites of maturation and
proliferation of B cells and T cells that protect against
disease-causing microbes.
9) Respiratory System
Components: Lungs and air passageways such as
the pharynx (throat), larynx (voice box), trachea
(windpipe), and bronchial tubes leading into and out
of lungs.

FUNCTIONS: Transfers oxygen from inhaled air to

blood and carbon dioxide from blood to exhaled air;
helps regulate acid-base balance of body fluids; air
flowing out of lungs through vocal cords produces
sounds.

10) Digestive System

Components: Organs of gastrointestinal tract, a long
tube that includes the mouth, pharynx (food tubes),
stomach, small and large intestines, and anus; also
includes accessory organs that assist in digestive
processes, such as salivary glands, liver, gallbladder
and pancreas.

FUNCTIONS: Achieves physical and chemical

breakdown of food absorbs nutrients; eliminates solid
wastes.

11) Urinary System

Components: Kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder and
urethra

FUNCTIONS: Produces, stores and eliminates urine;

eliminates wastes and regulates volume and chemical
composition of blood; helps maintain the acid-base
balance of body fluids; maintains body's mineral
balance; helps regulate production of red blood cells.

12) Reproduction Systems

Female
Components: ovaries and associated organs--uterine
tubes, uterus, vagina and mammary glands.

FUNCTIONS: Gonads produce oocytes that unite to

form a new organism; gonads also release hormones
that regulate reproduction and other body processes;
associated organs transport and store gametes;
mammary gland produces milk.

Male
Components: Testes and associated organs--
epididymides, ductus, deferens, seminal vesicles,
prostate and penis

FUNCTIONS: Gonads produces sperm that unite to

form a new organism; gonads also release hormones
that regulate reproduction and other body processes;
associated organs transport and store sperm

So, how does this energy of the Body flow and

interact with the Psyche or Soul and Spirit?

These body systems and parts produce substances

that influence the mind and the emotions.

The mind and the emotions in turn influence the

body.
How the psyche and the body interact with each
other is understood in different ways, according to
each region and culture:

The Systems of Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine is more than 5,000 years old. The

earliest herbal text, The Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic, is also
known as Plain Questions and the Canon of Acupuncture. The
book summarizes and systematizes the previous millennia of
herbal experience and deals with the anatomy and physiology of
the human body. This work lays the foundation for TCM.
The Twelve Meridians
Twelve was a sacred number in many cultures as Three-the flow of
Creation times the basic Four Directions equals out to Twelve.
The Meridians combine the physical systems of the Body with the
emotional and mental system of the Soul.
The Basic Practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine:
Eight extraordinary meridians[+]
The eight extraordinary vessels are (奇經八脈; qí jīng bā mài)
1. Conception Vessel (Ren Mai) - 任脈 [rèn mài]

2. Governing Vessel (Du Mai) - 督脈 [dū mài]

3. Penetrating Vessel (Chong Mai) - 衝脈 [chōng mài]

4. Girdle Vessel (Dai Mai) - 帶脈 [dài mài]

5. Yin linking vessel (Yin Wei Mai) - 陰維脈 [yīn wéi mài]
6. Yang linking vessel (Yang Wei Mai) - 陽維脈 [yáng wéi mài]

7. Yin Heel Vessel (Yin Qiao Mai) - 陰蹻脈 [yīn qiāo mài]

8. Yang Heel Vessel (Yang Qiao Mai) - 陽蹻脈 [yáng qiāo mài]

In LISHE medicine, the Eight Extraordinary Meridians link up to the Seven Chakras or
energy centers with the Governing and Conception Vessels flowing together as one with two
representations.

East Indian Chakras

Each Chakra psychologically mirrors a physical area connected with the

Endocrine and/or Nervous System.

AFRICAN MEDICINE
The medicine of the Middle Kingdoms' used the symbols of the
West Africans or the Ancient Egyptians to understand the
various physical/psychological systems and symptoms of illness.
Imhotep the Egyptian
Imhotep was the world’s first physician, and the architect who built Egypt’s first
pyramid. He is undisputedly the world’s first doctor, a priest, scribe, sage, poet,
astrologer, a vizier and chief minister, to Djoser (reigned 2630–2611 BC), the
second king of Egypt’s third dynasty.
Most of the medicinal techniques we use now had their origin in Egypt.
The famous Edwin Smith Papyrus Is named after the dealer who
uncovered the original manuscript. This work details these ancient
practices. If you would like to read about any of these cures, go to:

In West African Medicine the healers have Eight Spirits that manifest through
certain organs or illnesses. Each one has a special food, organ, color, season, day
and herb.
