ABSTRACT

This report is a summer training report submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirement for the
degree of Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering as per norms of NATIONAL INSTITUTE
OF TECHNOLOGY RAIPUR. It consists of brief study and description of materials, equipment and
procedures used at construction sites I visited under the supervision of Er. Pradeep Parvate who is
presently Sub-Engineer in Public Works Department and my training supervisor. Author put his best
to elaborate the actual site conditions, and problem faced at site and the tactics used to deal with
them.

Training at construction sites give an opportunity to implement the principles and knowledge
practically. The experience that one gets wonderful because what one studies in books is different
from what one fact in the field. It helps a student in getting acquainted with the manner in which his
knowledge is being practically used and this is normally different from what one has learnt from
books. Hence, when one switches from the process of learning to that of implementation his
knowledge, he finds an abrupt change. This is exactly why project during the B.Tech. Curriculum
becomes all the more important.

I’ve been to two construction sites. One was at the New Circuit House Campus, Raipur where a
Walk Way Bridge was under construction connecting the New Circuit House Building to a
Conventional Hall under construction located in same campus. The other was a proposed
Auditorium inside the premises of Pt. Girija Shankar Mishra Govt. Higher Secondary School
located at Raipura, Raipur.

At the first site i.e. Walk Way Bridge at New Circuit House Campus, when my training was started
the estimation & designing part was already completed. The Construction was on midway. Here, I
had the opportunity to get an insight to how the construction work is executed by interpreting the
drawings & plans and guidance from my supervisor. The choice of section of the bridge, spans, size
of columns, type and size of footings, reinforcements used, curing method used etc. were the
observations made out by me. Another very important aspect in this project was the selection of
entry and exit locations for this walk way bridge in the already constructed buildings so that it serves
its purpose effectively without disturbing any working in either of the buildings. Till the last day of
my training, the construction of the bridge was completed and its side and roof glass cover frame was
being erected.
The next site was that of auditorium at Raipura where the layout work was already completed and
the laying of PCC bases for footing was on progress. This was a bigger project with substantially
high amount of capital, area, workforce, machinery and experts involved. Here, I gained an
understanding of importance of layout, site markings, levelling of ground surface before
commencement of the work, checking the measurements and alignments at regular intervals and
improvisation in site. By the end of my training period, the sub-surface work was completed with all
footings and columns and the plinth beams were being casted. The guidance I received here from the
site engineer, contractor and sub engineer was helpful in understanding the application of the theory
and methods and techniques used in construction. By interacting with some of the labours, I also
learned the local names of some engineering elements which are used by them. This makes
communication of the design to the labours easier and gives them a sense of a naïve environment.

The main objective of this report is to present a systematic text on the Execution of construction
work based on the Indian Standard codes. Author has also discussed the real various procedures
involved before the actual start of construction of building, the legal procedures, precautions which
should be taken, importance of quality control. I have also included the dimensions of various
structural members present at the site.

In spite of every care taken, it is possible that some errors might have been left unnoticed. The author
sincerely welcomes the constructive criticism for improving the report.
