Objectives of the study

 to determine how much cost is saved when using asphalt mixture instead of concrete.

Asphalt and Concrete pavements

Asphalt

Road pavement can be made by asphalt or concrete. According to Asphalt pavement Association

of Michigan, hot mix asphalt (HMA) is a combination of approximately 95% stone, sand and

gravel and bound together by a 5% asphalt cement known as bitumen. The bitumen is melted

together with other aggregates at Hot Mix Asphalt facility and delivered by truck into the site.

The trucks dump the HMA mixture to the hoppers located at the paving machines, after that the

asphalt pavement will be compacted by a roller.

Concrete

Comparison

Asphalt pavement is more economic in terms of money and time than concrete pavement.

Considering the economic factors such as materials like the rebars for concrete pavements, man

power and specially the time of consumed when waiting for pavement to be usable.

Concrete is better in terms of strength and durability, it can handle extreme loads without

deformation. In a narrow road like alleys and street roads which doesn’t need strong pavements

because the moving loads are not that heavy unlike on major roads, asphalt is more efficient,

consider the financial resources and time that will be saved if asphalt mixture will be used

instead of concrete mixture.
