list/invoice copy shipped with the instrument. Unless LeCroy is notified promptly of
any missing or damaged item, responsibility for its replacement cannot be accepted.
Contact your nearest LeCroy Customer Service Center or national distributor
immediately (see chapter 2 for contact numbers).
1.1 Warranty
LeCroy warrants its oscilloscope products for normal use and operation within
specifications for a period of three years from the date of shipment. Calibration each
year is recommended to ensure in-spec. performance. Spares, replacement parts
and repairs are warranted for 90 days. The instrument's firmware has been
thoroughly tested and is thought to be functional, but is supplied without warranty of
any kind covering detailed performance. Products not made by LeCroy are covered
solely by the warranty of the original equipment manufacturer.
Under the LeCroy warranty, LeCroy will repair or, at its option, replace any product
returned within the warranty period to a LeCroy authorized service center. However,
this will be done only if the product is determined after examination by LeCroy to be
defective due to workmanship or materials, and not to have been caused by misuse,
neglect or accident, or by abnormal conditions or operation.

maintenance costs after the initial three-year warranty has expired. Other services
such as installation, training, enhancements and on-site repairs are available through
special supplemental support agreements.
1.4 Staying Up to Date
LeCroy is dedicated to offering state-of-the-art instruments, by continually refining
and improving the performance of LeCroy products. Because of the speed with which
physical modifications may be implemented, this manual and related documentation
may not agree in every detail with the products they describe. For example, there
might be small discrepancies in the values of components affecting pulse shape,

timing or offset, and — infrequently — minor logic changes. However, be assured the
scope itself is in full order and incorporates the most up-to-date circuitry. LeCroy
frequently updates firmware and software during servicing to improve scope
performance, free of charge during warranty. You will be kept informed of such
changes, through new or revised manuals and other publications.
Nevertheless, you should retain this, the original manual, for future reference
to your scope’s unchanged hardware specifications.
1.5 Service and Repair
Please return products requiring maintenance to the Customer Service Department in
your country or to an authorized service facility. The customer is responsible for
transportation charges to the factory, whereas all in-warranty products will be
returned to you with transportation prepaid. Outside the warranty period, you will need
to provide us with a purchase order number before we can repair your LeCroy product.
You will be billed for parts and labor related to the repair work, and for shipping.
1.6 How to Return a Product
Contact the nearest LeCroy Service Center or office to find out where to return the
product. All returned products should be identified by model and serial number. You
should describe the defect or failure, and provide your name and contact number. In
the case of a product returned to the factory, a Return Authorization Number (RAN)
should be used.
Return shipments should be made prepaid. We cannot accept COD (Cash On
Delivery) or Collect Return shipments. We recommend air-freighting.
It is important that the RAN be clearly shown on the outside of the shipping package
for prompt redirection to the appropriate LeCroy department.
1.7 What Comes with Your Scope
The following items are shipped together with the standard configuration of this
oscilloscope:
• Two 250 V Fuses, AC Power Cord and Plug
• Operator’s and Remote Control Manual

Note: Wherever possible, please use the original shipping carton. If a substitute
carton is used, it should be rigid and packed so that that the product is surrounded by
a minimum of four inches or 10 cm of shock-absorbent material.

2-2 General Information

The LP142 has not been designed to make direct measurements on the human
body. Users who connect a LeCroy oscilloscope directly to a person do so at their own
risk.

Power Requirements
The LP142 operates from a 100 V to 240V AC power source at 50 Hz to 60 Hz.
No voltage selection is required, since the instrument automatically adapts to the
line voltage present.
Fuses
The power supply of the LP142 is protected against short-circuit and overload by
means of two 3.15 A/250 V AC “T”-rated fuses, located above the mains plug.
Disconnect the power cord before inspecting or replacing a fuse. Open the fuse
box by inserting a small screwdriver under the plastic cover and prying it open. For
continued fire protection at all line voltages, replace only with fuses of the specified
type and rating (see above).
Ground
The LP142 has been designed to operate from a single-phase power source, with
one of the current-carrying conductors (neutral conductor) at ground (earth)
potential. Maintain the ground line to avoid an electric shock.
None of the current-carrying conductors may exceed 250 V rms with respect to
ground potential. The LP142 is provided with a three-wire electrical cord containing
a three-terminal polarized plug for mains voltage and safety ground connection.
The plug's ground terminal is connected directly to the frame of the unit. For
adequate protection against electrical hazard, this plug must be inserted into a
mating outlet containing a safety ground contact.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Maintenance and repairs should be carried out exclusively by a LeCroy technician.
Cleaning should be limited to the exterior of the instrument only, using a damp, soft
cloth. Do not use chemicals or abrasive elements. Under no circumstances should
moisture be allowed to penetrate the disk drive analyzer. To avoid electric shocks,
disconnect the instrument from the power supply before cleaning.

CAUTION

Risk of electrical shock: No user-serviceable parts inside. Leave repair to

qualified personnel.

General Information 2-3

Battery
Use only the specified battery when replacing the battery.
Failure to replace the battery with the same or equivalent type could result in an
explosion.
Dispose of the used batteries according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Theory of Operation

4. Theory of Operation
4.1 Processor Board
HD6477034F20(SH1)
The CPU board consists of single chip RISC microcomputer SH1 of Hitachi Ltd.
SH1 has, ROM(64KB), RAM(4KB), Timer, Serial Communications Interface(SCI),
A/D Converter, Interrupt Controller, I/O port.
SH1 can access a built-in memory by the width of one state 32bit (An external bus
is width of 16bit).
The board consists of three circuit blocks.
Block of 16bit bus
CPU,MEMORY,LCDC,PRINTER I/F
Block of 8bit bus
BUS I/F,EXT CHIP SELECTOR,PCMCIA I/F,FDC,RS-232C
Block of serial bus
RTC,DC GENERATOR

Power Supply
The board requires +5V power source excluding a part of an external bus (8bit data
bus for the DMC board access).
The 8bit data bus for the DMC board access converts the level into 3.3V by using
74LVX4245(IC4).
+3.3V power source is used by the shunt regulator NJM431U(IC27) on the board.
+5V power source (two kinds for and around CPU for PCMCIA I/F) is supplied by
the MOTHER board through connector FX5-20P-SH(J5) of (HIROSE).

16bit Peripheral
There are two devices hooked on the 16bit data bus.
Controller LCDC
MEMORY system

MEMORY
Memory circuit consists of two SRAM of 4MB and one FRASH PROM of 8 MB.

SRAM
The SRAM circuit consists of two SRAM IC(IC15,IC16) of 8bit with 16bit bus.
Internal data is protected with backup battery CR2354-1NF at power source OFF.
The SRAM circuit is used as a work area for the program, various set data, the
waveform data and display memory.

FLASH PROM
FLASH PROM circuit consists of FLASH PROM(IC17) of 1MB compatible of
29F008 with 16bit bus mode. Reading FLASH PROM is the same as usual
EPROM. To erase or write to memory, commands are written into the data bus.
Writing and erasing must be performed over monitoring the status-signals (RY/#BY)
on the port (IC49). IC17 is used as a saving area of the adjustment data besides
program ROM area. The program can be rewritten through the memory card
(SRAM and FLASH, etc.) and centronics interfaces.

Theory of Operation 4-1

LCDC
LCD Controller CD110APF(IC11) generates all signals for the displaying of STN
black and white LCD of H 320 dots V 240 dots (serial output of the displaying data
and synchronizing signal output).
An access for the display memory (IC15, IC16) uses the NBRZQ and NBACK signal
by built-in DMA with CPU bus without a special interface.
IC11 composes two virtual screens (waveform and character) with IC15,IC16 and
display in one frame.
IC11 can display the reversed and interleaved screen after composing.
IC11 has a 40 MHz quartz oscillator, and sends a 20MHz clock divided to an analog
control (used on the ANA board) and CPU.
IC11 has the printer control port (8bit data bus, busy and strobe signal) for the built-
in printer and Centronics port. Additionally, it has an 8bit general-purpose port, and
produces the control signal such as PCMCIA I/F.

PRINTER I/F
8bit data bus from the LCDC for the printer control is connected with the PRINTER
board and Centronics port.
The PBUSY and PSTB signal of the IC11 are transmitted after selecting the path
(Centronics port or PRINTER board)with analog switch TC4053BF(IC12).

8bit Peripheral
There are five devices hooked on the 8bit data bus.
BUS I/F
EXT CHIP SELECTOR
PCMCIA I/F
FDC
RS-232C

BUS I/F
This I/F consists of the buffer of the address and data.
The addresses for the devices on 16bit bus are directly connected with the CPU
output.
However the addresses for the devices on the 8bit bus, low order 8bit(CA0-7) are
connected through level latch (IC6) and high order 8bit(CA8-15) through
buffer(IC5).
The level latch of the low address changes an address before the NRDZXT signal is
not activated, which prevents a malfunction of the LSI(13IC1,14IC1) on the DMC
board.
The data bus requires two power sources +3.3V, 74LVX4245(IC4), and +5V,
74VHCT245(IC7).
+5V is used for PCMCIA I/F, Super I/O, PANNEL KEY I/F, and the PRINTER board,
and +3.3V is used for the DMC board.
Signals other than the data bus of the DMC board can be directly connected to +5V.

4-2 Theory of Operation

EXT CHIP SELECTOR
This device generates various control signals for the 8bit bus by XC9536 (IC9) that
is a programmable chip from the CPU.
The configuration to XC9536 is automatically performed only once when
downloading is executed with Centronics port.
Once the IC9 is programmed, the IC9 is recognized to have written program
automatically by the access to an internal register, and does not configure again
without compulsive configuration which is the short of the pattern on the board.

If configuration to XC9536 does not end normally, the access of 8bit bus to the
device cannot be executed.

PCMCIA I/F
XC9536 (IC9) and CD110 (APF) chiefly generate the control signal for memory card
mode (ATA, SRAM, and FLASH) and I/O card mode (GP-IB).
74VHCT373(IC23) is level latch during read circle.

PC97338VJG (Super I/O)

This device (IC26) controls RS-232C and the floppy disk.
IC26 has the exclusive crystal oscillator of 24MHz.
RS-232C operates only by connecting buffer DS14C232CM (IC20) for the RS.
Since IC26 has the buffer of 16 bytes in the chip, a high-speed serial transfer
(115.2kbps or less) can be achieved.
Connecting 2HD drive directly without external components other than pull-up
resistors can control the floppy disk.
IC26 operates in the interrupt mode.
This board uses neither the parallel port control nor the IDE interface function.

RTC
RS5C313 (IC25) is a real-time clock controlled with the serial bus from the CPU.
This chip generates the clock with connecting the crystal oscillator of special
32.768KHz internally and the interruption signal for the CPU in 1s intervals.
It is possible to keep operating with backup battery CR2354-1NF also at power
source OFF.

DC GENERATOR
The serial bus (SCK1, TXD1) of the CPU control the 16bit DA converter used for
DC GENERATOR on the ANA board.
The update of data is executed by 3ms period, and the control signals other than
data are generated by the DMC board.

Reset circuit
The M51957BFP (IC1) monitors the power voltage. Whenever the Vcc goes below
+4.72V (even for a very short time), a reset pulse (the width is determined by the
C11 and C12’s capacity) is generated.

Interrupt control
The interrupt controller is the built-in CPU.
The interrupt signal is connected as follows:

Theory of Operation 4-3

IRQ2: LCDC
IRQ3: DMC board
IRQ4: PCMCIA (I/O card mode)
IRQ6: Super I/O (FDC, RS-232C)
IRQ7: RTC
There is no priority level of the interrupt (It is the same as all signals).

Voltage Detector Circuit

This circuit uses the 3CH in 10bit AD conversion (8CH or less) of built-in CPU.
The signal is connected as follows:
PC0: Temperature sensor output set up in LCD surroundings
PC1: Probe sense output (CH1, CH2, and EXT multiplexed signal).
PC2: Temperature sensor output (CH1 and CH2 multiplexed signal) set up in
HAD626 (500MSPS AD converter) surroundings

Bus Control
The decoding in the CPU produces the chip select signals of the following.
Area address device
Area 0 H'0000000 to H'0FFFFFF built-in ROM
Area 1 H'1000000 to H'1FFFFFF LCDC
Area 2 H'2000000 to H'2FFFFFF PCMCIA, Super I/O KEY PRINTER

LCD Peripherals Circuit

This circuit generates voltage (18-26V) for the contrast control of the LCD by the
output (0 to 2.5V) of the 8bit D/A converter on the DMC board. Additionally, it has
the function to set the contrast to a standard value initialized forcibly by IC8.

Compulsive Power OFF Circuit

The temperature of the HAD626 (A/D converter of 500Ms/S) is always monitored
with the CPU. Whenever the HAD626’s temperature exceeds the value set by the
adjustment menu, the scope turns the bit of IC7 (74HC74) ON and the power
source OFF automatically.
Turning off the power switch reset the IC7 and the compulsive power OFF is
released.

PCM56U 16bit DA conversion every 3ms through TC4051BF (8IC3).
The generated signal is as follows.

sends to CPU board through TC4051BF (8IC8).

Calibration
This circuit generates the DC voltage for automatic calibration according to the
resistance division of the reference voltage, adjusted the manual operation to
3.000V, sent to the CAL terminal.
The Divided voltage is selected by TC4051BF (8IC9), is supplied to the input part of
each signal while attenuated to 1/5 through LT1097S8.
During the calibration, the Input voltage is fed to the CAL terminal, or the square
waveforms signal of 0.6V/1kHz is sent to the CAL terminal.
The Divided voltage and Input voltage as shown in the table below.

Power Supply
±5V on the boards is produced from ±6V of the Power Source unit.

4.4 DMC Board

DAS (Data Acquisition System)
The DMC Board Converts the transmitted analog signal into the digital signal of 8bit
and writes it to the memory.
The DMC Board consists of the A/D converter, DMC&MEMORY, CLOCK
GENERATOR, TIM, and the power source.

4-14 Theory of Operation

HAD626 (500MSPS AD converter)
The HAD626 converts the analog signal transmitted from the A/D buffer of the ANA
board into the digital signal of 8bit by HAD626 (11IC1, 12IC1).
The conversion is always executed by 500Ms/S fixed, and interleaving the data
written in the memory does the change in the sampling rate.
The HAD626 sets the gain and the offset through the serial interface only when the
power on initializing, other case do not use.
The delay time of sampling can be adjusted with an external bias, but on this board
it is fixed at 0V.
The input clock to HAD626 is 500MHz and the HAD626 output is divided into
250MHz.
Therefore, it is necessary to lose the phase difference between CH1 and the CH2
clock. The HAD626 stops clock at power on initializing, and initializes the circuit of
dividing frequency in the HAD626.
Though the output of HAD626 is a ECL level but the input of CD710APF (13IC1,
14IC1) is the PECL level so it does the level conversion with the buffer and the
current switch

To monitor the temperature of HAD626 indirectly, temperature sensor LM45C

(11IC5, 12IC5) is mounted on the board under the heat sink.

CD710APF and Memory

The digital signal output from HAD626 is acquired to CD710APF (13IC1, 14IC1), is
divided into eight phases after interleaving and the peak detection etc, is processed
and written in two 32bit width synchronous SRAM simultaneously.

The 14IC1 for CH2 becomes a master and controls the data acquisition of the start
and stop and the detection of the trigger point.
At this time, IC (13IC1) for CH1 operates only by the SWATO signal of CH2.
Data is read through the data bus of IC.
Reading independently does CH1 and CH2 respectively by the unit of 8bit.

Theory of Operation 4-15

4-16 Theory of Operation
Theory of Operation 4-17
CLOCK GENERATOR
PLL IC (LM1501A) and VCO (MQE901-1016) generate a 1GHz clock.
The standard clock uses the crystal oscillator of 10MHz (accuracy 50ppm).
The 1GHz clock is then divided by IC (MC10EL34) with the enable terminal so that
the 250MHz clock is transmitted to ADC of CH1 and CH2 through the buffer of ECL.
The enable terminal is used to reset the divider circuit for the ADC at turning on the
power source.

TIM
The phase difference between the trigger signal and the sampling clock (rise time
edge of 250MCLK) is detected.
The phase difference is converted into a pulse expanded 100 times by the charge
and discharge circuit compared with 100 times current ratio, this pulse are
measured the time in CH2 DMC IC.

The calculated time is used to correct the displaying position of the waveform
during normal and equivalent sampling.

Other Control
Conversion into 5V of control signal sent from general-purpose port of DMC IC
(13IC1, 14IC1)
Generating of chip selection signal versus DMC IC
Control of contrast and TIM gain which uses 8bit DA converter (MB88346BPF)
The signal of the temperature sensor for HAD626 of CH1 and CH2 is selected
and transmission to CPU board.

Power Supply
The boards produce ±5V and -4.5V from ±6V of the Power Source unit.
Moreover, the power source of -1.7V for the PECL levels and 0.8V for HAD626, is
generated on the board, too.

4.5 Outline of Power Source

Input voltages: Wide ranges of inputs, 90V to 250 V AC (50/60 Hz) are allowed.
Output voltages: 8 different DC voltages available.
+30 V (MOTHER)
+12 V (MOTHER)
+7 V (PRINTER)

The composition of the power supply unit is as described in the following:

1. Input circuit (noise filters and rectifiers are included)
It includes from inlet, J1, to bridge diode, DS1.
2. Harmonic-current correction power supply
By employing a step-up converter system, the input current waveform is
controlled to be similar to the waveform of input voltage. The control unit is a

4-18 Theory of Operation

ZHMA6400(HIC) made with IC8, which drives switching transistor, MOS-FET,
TR1. This circuit consists of choking coil L3, diode D1, capacitors C12. Output
voltage is regulated to +380 V ±10VDC.
3. Main power supply
Uses a fly-back converter.
TOP204YAI made with IC9 is used in switching transistor, MOS-FET, in the
circuit of the switching power control.
4. Auxiliary power supply
The output voltage of transformer, T2 is used in auxiliary power supply. Output
voltage is proportional to input voltage. (3.6V to 9V AC)
5. Output regulator.
Outputs the main power supply and stabilizes the outputs of the main power
source of +3.3 V, -4.5 V, -6V, +30V, +12V, +5V and reduces the level of ripple
noises.

The power switch is located on the secondary side (not the primary side) in order to
switch-on and -off of the outputs at the secondary side; the whole control is made
by switching on and off of the current control oscillator, which is configured with the
IC 8 and IC9. Although the power switch is placed to its off position, therefore, the
power is being fed to all the components in the power supply units (stand-by mode),
as far as this LiteRunner supply is connected to the AC outlet.

The above switching-on and -off function is actually made by shorting and opening
of the power supply output ,“REMOTE” and “GND” in the power unit.

Since the design of this LiteRunner power supply is made based on the use of
forced air cooling with the fan-motors, operating the power supply for long hours by
removing the upper and bottom covers would cause tripping of the overheating
protection circuit inside of IC9 because of the temperature rise in the unit, and will
result in the cease of power output.

The DC outputs are all guarded by the overload-current protection circuits;

therefore, output short circuiting will not cause any damage to the equipment even it
takes place. However, when the short-circuited state continues for long hours, the
power output switch may open due to a possible temperature rise in several circuits,
causing the excess-current protecting circuit to activate.

Release the overheat protection circuit from its activated mode for a while by
disconnecting the AC inlet plug out of the AC receptacle.

Do not touch any electric parts inside the power supplies during operation as the
primary side of the power unit has many portions of over 500 Vrms of magnitudes to
grounding.

Operation
The fuse, F1, heat-breaks to shut down the input when an abnormal excess-current
keeps running through the input circuit. Replacing of the fuse must be made after
locating the problem area and fixing the failed parts.

Theory of Operation 4-19

The coils, L1, L2, and L5, and capacitors, C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C7, and C8,
configure the circuits of the noise filters to the AC power lines.

The thermally sensitive resistor, TH1, limits the input rush power supply.

The diode, D1, is a bridge diode and is used for direct full wave rectification of the
AC input.
The IC8 in the HIC unit receives its operating power from the voltage of terminal
C12 and R1 adjusts the output of the driving signals (Gate Signals) for the transistor
TR1, and operates the Harmonic control power supply which consists of the choking
coil L3, diode D1, capacitors C12, etc., to obtain the sine wave input current and the
output of +380 V DC.

Transfer T1 is that of fly-back converter. Switch the power supply of +380 V DC

mentioned above with IC9 to change the signal to the alternative signal of the
square waveform.

The variable resistor, VR1, is to adjust the output DC voltage. Adjust the voltage to
+6V DC with the VR1.

The transistor IC9 in the circuit of the switching power control generates the output
voltages by the photo couples PC1.
Normally, +5V to +6V DC is added to control input 1 pin of IC9.

The photo coupler, PC2 transmits the signal of power-on or –off to IC9. When
power-off, turn the TR2 on and make input voltage of IC9 0 V DC.

7. Schematics, Layouts, Parts List

To order parts, contact your local LeCroy service office. A list of the service centers is
given in section 2 of this manual. For boards, you can either order a new board or an
exchange board. Exchange assemblies are factory repaired, inspected, tested and
calibrated. If you order an exchange card, you must return the defective part.

This chapter contains the schematics, layouts and parts list.
