I was 24 and working at a knife retail
store in a busy mall in San Diego, CA.
There were knives on almost every
available surface. We sold kitchen
cutlery, hunting knives, fantasy daggers
& swords, you name it.

alone had at least 70 kitchen knives on
it. Most days it was fairly quiet, with
nothing to do. I kept myself busy by
cleaning the display shelves, rearranging
the knives and chasing kids out of the
store.

One day this kid walks in, can't have
been more than 17 years old. He wore
these faded saggy jeans that hung
around his butt, a black T-shirt that said
something incredibly vulgar on the
front, a surplus army jacket, greasy
black hair, and sneakers that looked like
they hadn't come off his feet since he
was 10. Just the kind of kid that you
need to keep an eye on to make sure
nothing gets stolen or damaged.
The kid walks over to the counter and
Frankly, I'm relieved. I mean, even if he
takes off with it, I am out $5 bucks, tops.
I hand it to him and he handles it like an
angry postal worker, stabbing at the air
like he has a grudge to settle.

I point out that I'd really appreciate it if
he kept it on the counter rather than
swing it around, and he gives me a cold
stare and says, "What would you do if
I stabbed you?" I immediately reply with
"I dunno, bleed!?"

He squinted at me for a second, trying to
figure out if I was putting him on. Then
he shook his head, laughed and shuffled
off. I kept an eye on him, and at one
point asked him if he was going to buy

He glanced at the door, hiked up his
pants and bent his knees as if he was
getting ready to make a run for it. But he
didn't. Instead, he asked me what
I would do if he took off with the knife.
WTF?! I mean, seriously?! Let me tell
you, that kid had some nerve.

I sort of smirked and chuckled like
I couldn't believe he would be that
stupid and I said to him, "Kid, I throw
knives for a living and I have been doing
it now for about 7 years. If you look
behind me, you'll see that I have plenty
of knives to choose from. Now, I might
miss you with one, but with this many,
I could be throwing for a half hour
straight."

Again, he gives me that "You gotta be
kidding me, right?" look, but he can tell
that I'm not messing around. Of course,
I made the whole story up. I've never
been good at throwing anything other
than parties, but I figure he doesn't need
to know that.

The kid thinks it over for a second,
probably wondering how serious I'm
being and taking his snarky attitude
down a notch.
He eventually figures that running might
not be the smartest thing to do and that
he has made enough mistakes that day
as it is (the first being his choice of
outfit). He nods, carefully places the
hunting knife back on the counter, and
casually walks out. I never see him
again.

Now, we get all kinds of whacked-out
nutjobs here in southern California. Best
way to deal with them is laugh them off
and refuse to take their crap. Sure, doing
that can get you killed or hurt, but at the
time, I guess I had nothing to lose.
