Dear Friends at Hill,
Earlier this summer I heard a man offer a familiar criticism of the church; “I don’t like organized
religion!”. My first response to that is always, “Does that mean you are fond of disorganized religion?” Of
course, it is important to be organized to function properly as a church. Otherwise, we would be like the man
who jumped on his horse and rode off in all directions. And it is our legacy and heritage as Presbyterians that
we do everything “decently and in order” (ORGANIZED).
After just a few months with you, I am keenly aware that one of the strengths of Hill U. P. Church is that
it is well organized; with a dedicated and efficient Clerk, faithful committee chairs, and a very collegial and
committed session. That will be a great asset to our new pastor to begin a strong, well directed ministry and
mission for the leadership and direction of this church - and, also, a great blessing!
But what is as important as being well organized is what Theologian Brian McClara called the necessity
of being an “organizing” church; a church which is vital and alive; with vision and hope; providing
meaningful and edifying worship; encouraging a supportive and regular prayer life; offering opportunities for
growth and learning; and a community of faith committed to mission, not only to the needs locally (children
and needy) but also abroad with our partnership with the Bubiashie church.
What excites me as I look to the immediate future with the coming of a new pastor is that Hill U.P. is not
only well organized, but, more importantly, a vital, energetic, dedicated, “organizing” church, a good
foundation for the exciting days to come.
Let us continue now to pray for direction and presence of God’s spirit during these final days as we seek
and welcome our new pastor and her family. May you continue to be, with her leadership, a significant voice
for Christ in this community.

Rev. Leigh Benish received her Master of Divinity degree from the University
of Dubuque Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa and her Bachelor’s
Degree in Religion and History from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Although she is a native of the Midwest, Leigh has been serving as Associate
Pastor at Grace Presbyterian Church in Temple,
Texas since October 2013. She has a passion for
working with children, engaging in service, and
crafting and leading creative and meaningful
worship services. While it will be a change, Leigh is excited about
her move to serving as a solo pastor. Leigh shares her life with her
husband, David (who she met in middle school youth group) and
their 3-year-old son, Gabriel.
Eighteen volunteers turned out on Wednesday, July 11, and every one of them
was needed to serve dinner to 101 Community Dinner guests! The menu was
ham loaf, potato salad, green beans, dinner rolls, cantaloupe, and cup cakes. Co-
chairs Marsh and Sharon Miller and Barb and Jim Kamerer would like to thank
the cupcake bakers: Judy Birch, Susan Catanzarito, Jane Kennedy, Diane Olenic,
and Bea Welch. Because of their work, we had plenty of dessert to serve in July WORSHIP
and enough cupcakes in the freezer for next month’s dinner. ATTENDANCE

Invite a guest or two as you give thanks and worship our Lord in the beauty of

His creation during our annual Worship Without Walls service on Sunday,
August 26th at the Masonic Shelter at Alameda Park (the large shelter beside 6/3 82
the big, purple playground). Again, we have invited other Presbyterian 6/10 78
churches in our area to join us! Our annual Church picnic will immediately

Isn't this world a crazy place? Just when I thought our chance had passed, You go and save the best for last.
Who doesn’t love Vanessa Williams singing that song? At some point in the week of our Mission Possible
workcamp experience, it occurred to Miss Kathy that it was literally true. She has taken, or arranged, many
groups on Mission Trips in several states but this year’s group of young people was really exceptional. Next year is
the National Presbyterian Youth Triennium and we hope all who qualify can go! And the year after that, Kathy
will be rocking away in retirement so this was her final trip. God truly did save the best for last. Despite the fact
that this is the youngest group of students she has ever travelled with, they were incredibly hard workers. One of
the main purposes of this trip was team building and despite the heat, humidity and lack of privacy, they really
did gel into a cohesive force that the Hill can be proud of. They made a commitment to make off with two
coveted camp prizes: the Golden Dustpan for cleanest living space and Polar Plunge, the 7:00 AM swim. To say
they were far and away the best contenders is quite an understatement.
Our work sites were varied. On Monday we rendered our service to Camp Crestfield and painted two sides
of one of the large cabins. It was a perfect painting day but it still got hot and the ladders were heavy however
they soldiered on undeterred and the end product was beautiful. On Tuesday, we travelled to Sewickley to
World Vision where we sorted, folded, and packed 2000+ t-shirts for overseas shipment, Wednesday we ended
up in Eastbrook at the United Methodist Mission barn where we built and loaded handicapped ramp modules that
were scheduled to be installed the following Saturday. After lunch we packed very needed flood clean-up buckets
for shipment all over the region. On Thursday we were off early to the Grove City Food Bank to unload the
truck of food and to help clean up the thrift store. Hot work but we each got a stuffed animal in gratitude.
Friday, we got to work in air conditioning! We helped prepare games for carnivals in Youngstown housing projects
that other mission groups would conduct the week of July 8.
Our time at Camp Crestfield included Bible study, worship, swimming, low ropes course, archery, rock wall
climbing, group games and more. Please talk to our students are ask about their favorite experiences! The
students attending this year included Grace Seybert, Sam Heist, Emily Rodgers, Lydia Reeger, Bethany Sowa, and
Declan Graham. Steve Arn was the awesome leader of the team. Our counsellors assigned by Crestfield included
Patrick, a recent graduate from Mt. Lebanon who will be majoring in theater set design in the fall and Rik, a 6’4”
giant from the Netherlands National Volleyball team. Our music leaders included Pablo, a handsome soccer
player from Spain. What a great chance to meet people from so many walks of life! Three women graciously
covered for Kathy so she could replace her Alzheimer Care Giver Hat each evening: Barb Graham, Susan
Catanzarito, and Louise Evans. Barb and Louise are former Crestfield campers, and Susan was on the very first
ever mission trip sponsored by the Hill. Welcome back, ladies!
WILD WEDNESDAYS is our new cooperative summer program with St. Andrews for kids in Grades 1-6. It
meets from 11:30-2:00, rain or shine, at Memorial Park. Our first week was Crazy Games and they were
awesome. Ms. Stephanie Slezak had a great devotional time and Mr. Steve Arn manned the grill like a pro. We
made chenille and clothes pin butterflies to remember the day. On July 18 we partnered with the Fire
Department to offer a day on Fire Safety including a chance to explore the truck, try on some gear as well as join
in fire fighter relays and Fire Safety Bingo. The August event is under construction. We’ll get back to yinz on the
theme!
LOOKING AHEAD- Far ahead…Next summer is the year for the National Presbyterian Youth Conference
known as Triennium. Five thousand young high school young people will gather at Purdue University in
Indianapolis for five days of CONVERSATION, RECREATION, LEARNING, WORSHIP AND FUN! The
Triennium experience is packed with the things students long to explore! Digging into faith through a variety of
activities and experiences – all focused around the theme “Here’s My Heart” participants at the Triennium will re
-enter their lives with a fresh sense of inspiration grounded in the context of personal and communal worship!
July 16-20, 2019. That’s where we’ll be!

responsibility, the Presbytery organized a blood donation at Bubiashie on 7th July
2018. Among the donors each year is the Rev. Joshua Heikkila. We commend
