o Typical Setup –
 The system is feeding power into a house
 CB Closed, Disc Closed, Grounds Open

o Forced Outage due to storm

 A tree falls onto the line near the house
 To break the “fault”, the CB will Automatically open after devices detect an interrupt in power flow
 CB Open, Disc Closed, Grounds Open

o Checking the System

 Once the tree is cleared, a utility crew will go to the substation to “close” the breaker back
 If there is no issue, the CB will close back
 HOWEVER, if needed, the crew will do maintenance on the CB
 To be safe, they will isolate the CB from the system in the following manner
 Open the Disconnect Switch to stop the flow of voltage
 Apply Ground Switch as a safety point. This further protects the crew in case the
Disconnect Switch closes by accident. The voltage would not flow into the CB, but force
the voltage into the “ground”
 CB Open, Disc Open, Grounds Closed

o Restoring System
 Once work is complete, the Grounds are removed First, then Disconnect Closed, then CB Closed
in the final step.
