What is PALS? Why PALS?

PALS is a scientifically-based ⚫ Increases practice time for

peer-mediated instructional everyone
program. In other words, it is a ⚫ Provides increased opportunities
very structured class-wide peer to respond
tutoring program which combines ⚫ Provides positive and productive
effective instructional principles peer interactions
and practices with peer ⚫ Creates an opportunity for lower-
mediation so that research- achieving students to assume an
based reading and math activities integral role in a valued activity
are effective, feasible, and
⚫ Can target students who
enjoyable. need more support

How does PALS work? Who benefits via PALS?

1. Rank students based on academic performance.
Split the list in half. Pair the top high- Students who are…
performing student with the top low
performer. ⚫ Low achievers in reading
2. Teacher trains students how pairs will work
together through modeling. (Each time PALS is and/or math
used, teacher provides direct instruction on
how to do the activity.) ⚫ English Language Learners
3. High-performing student plays the role of
“coach” first. (Use color coded folders or ⚫ Students with Disabilities
picture cards to conceal academic level
difference.) ⚫ Everyone (K-12)
4. Students take turns playing the role of “coach”
throughout the program.

**Teacher training prior to executing PALS in

classroom is highly recommended.
