USTA Southern Creates
Local Leader Liaison Pilot
PTR Partners With USAPA The USTA Southern Section has created
a pilot program for “local leader liaisons”
To Certify Pickleball Coaches to help grow tennis at the local level. The
section also contracted with three people
to fill these positions in their areas.
USTA Southern's local leader liaisons
(LLL) will serve as conduits to various
USTA organizations and local tennis
groups to increase tennis participation.
They will also advocate for construction
or repair of municipal tennis courts, and
will reach out to residents or groups with
little or no experience in the sport.
“The purpose of the pilot is to increase
tennis participation in specific target
areas,” says USTA Vice President and
LLL Task Force Co-Chair Randy Jackson.
“These individuals will be ambassadors
for tennis. Each of our new local leader
liaisons have impressive credentials,
positive attitudes and are already making
good things happen in their areas.”
The first three local leader liaisons
are Pat Malone of Jonesboro, Ark., Kerri
Becker of New Orleans, and Rivers
Humber of Clarksdale, Miss.

Fabric structures can provide

tennis players practice or

a space that is easy to move around in,

the weather conditions outside.
While fabric buildings may not be the
first structures that come to mind for
athletic facilities, they do offer several
advantages, including low structure

businesses have chosen to house tennis
courts in a fabric building because of
the unique benefits they provide.

Humility
Humility can be an elusive quality in a competitive industry
full of egos. However, in a profession reliant on happy
customers, it is crucial. The best advice for those of us
challenged by this is low-key your qualities by letting them
speak for themselves. Let others discover your skills by being
quietly confident and never arrogant. Part of this is learning
the difficult lesson of being tactfully honest at all times.
Related to this is a lesson I learned from Tim Heckler while he
was giving me the USPTA test in 1974. He noted that I was very
proud of my knowledge of teaching skills and techniques. He
burst my bubble by saying it was good and well that I had such
ability, but I should face the reality that customers will sign up
with me because they like me long before they do it because of
my knowledge.
