Staphylococcus aureus, and Aspergillus fumigatus

ABSTRACT

The present study entitled HONEY EXTRACT AS GROWTH INHIBITORS


AGAINST Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Aspergillus fumigatus
aims to determine whether honey can inhibit bacterial growth.
Different test was conducted to determine the antibacterial and antifungal
properties of honey extract in varying concentrations; T1-100%, T2-50%, and T3-
10%.There were also T4-positive control and T5-negative controls. The test organisms
used were Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus fumigatus. These
subjects were tested and measured through their zones of inhibition.
In vitro bioassay test results revealed that Treatment 1 (100%) honey extract
inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli at 0 mm zone of inhibition as well as in Treatment 2
(50%) extract, Treatment 3 (10%) extract and Treatment 5 (negative control) while the
Treatment 4 that is the positive control (penicillin) shows 21.95 mm zone of inhibition.
This implies that only the positive control (penicillin) has the antibacterial property
against E.coli.
Results also revealed that Treatment 1 (100%) honey extract significantly inhibit
the growth of Staphylococcus aureus at 16.23 mm followed by Treatment 2 (50%) and
Treatment 3 (10%) that showed no zone of inhibition. Positive control shows 45.43 mm
zone of inhibition. Negative control shows no zone of inhibition. This also shows that the
100% honey extract concentration showed 16.23 mm zone of inhibition and positive
control shows 45.43 mm zone of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus. This implies
that both treatments extract exhibit antibacterial property against the test organism.
The positive control on the Aspergillus fumigatus showed 24.98 mm zone of
inhibition. This was followed by 50%, 10% and negative treatment of honey extract with
no significant differences. The 100% honey extract showed 44.02 mm. In the case of
Honey extract against Aspergillus fumigatus the 100% honey extract (44.02mm) is more
effective than the positive control (24.98mm) that implies that the honey extract has
anti-fungal property against Aspergillus fumigatus.
It was concluded honey extract is best in treating fungal organisms.
