Experiment No. 1

Calibration of Weir of Hydrology Apparatus

INTRODUCTION

This preliminary work aims to calibrate the weir of

the Hydrology Apparatus.

OBJECTIVE:

The objective of this experiment is to obtain the

relationship between the flow rate and depth of flow
characteristics of the weir.

LABORATORY PROCEDURE:

A weir calibration curve should be made prior to any

rainfall-run-off experiment. This is a plot of head h above
the weir notch against its corresponding flowrate.

Divert flow from the rotameter to the pipe connecting

to valve C and D. Open valve C and D and close Valve B.
Allow water to pass through the collecting chamber 7 until
flow flows over the weir. When flow becomes stable, take
flowrate(liter per minute-lpm) reading (using rotameter)
and height (head) above weir. Continue adjusting and
reading various flowrate values using valve A and
corresponding head values above weir. Plot the pair of
depth (x-axis) and the flow recorded (y-axis) for the weir.
Make sure that low values (1-lpm)and fractions are
considered in the plot.

RESULTS and CALCULATIONS:

A) At each pair of flowrate and depth, a plot should be

made and described in terms of the following equation
Q (lpm) = f(H(mm)):
