Design Brief :

My design intervention will aim at creating a system or an arrangement of relevant products [sourced,
designed or modified] that will allow rainwater harvesting on a medium sized [200 tons] fishing boat as a
supplement for water stored on board for drinking, bathing and personal hygiene. I aim to make my design
capable of being accepted universally – even outside of the current context.
MALPE

India is a country which is a second largest fish

producer in the world. There is fishing carried out from
inland to deep sea. The fishing industry employees
over 14 million people. The fishing community also
contributes to the growth of our economy to a large
extend. In the past few decades have seen the growth of
the fishing industry, marking the shift from traditional
fishing to commercial fishing.

Malpe is one of most important and busiest port in

Karnataka. A considerable number of population
is engaged in fishing and in fish industries. T Three
major kinds of fishing techniques are practised here
which are trawling, purse seine and gill netting.
Most fishermen in Malpe belong to the Mogaveera
community. Mogaveera is one such fishing community
in Malpe residing alongside other communities who
have migrated here due to its huge fish market and
employment opportunities.

RAINWATER HARVESTING
SYSTEM
Rainwater Harvesting on Boat

It is found that rainwater harvesting, the collection of rain from surfaces upon which it falls, is a long-
standing practice of many countries still used as a means for dealing with the water problems of today.
Rain is harvested in many ways and is a vital supplementary source of water.

As Malpe is a coastal area, where it is raining most of the time throughout the year, rainwater
harvesting can be tried as the water from the rain can be consumed by people around instead of
getting wasted. On the boat, when fishermen go for fishing for 10-12 days, they carry approximately
2000 liters of drinking water with them.

Climatic conditions of Malpe

The climate here is tropical. There is significant rainfall in most months of the year. The short dry sea-
son has little effect on the overall climate.
Precipitation here averages 4360 mm.

The driest month is January, with 0 mm of rain. With an average of 1437 mm, the most precipitation
falls in July.

Different catchment areas ( Possibilites )
Understanding already existing methods

The function of the first flush device is to take the water from the catchment
area into the storage tank. By using the first flush method, bird droppings, First flush CATCHMENT
dust and airborne contaminants from rainwater are removed from the
catchment area. First flush devices are also available at cost effective rates.

It is very important to avoid the first 10 minutes of rain as it brings down

the dust and pollution present in the air as it comes after a long time.

The first flush of the rain can also be used for non-drinking purposes.

Boat Model

I made a basic scale down

model of the boat, in order
to understand the form and
structure of the cabin ( roof)
and possible catchment area
of the boat.

The model is a scale down

CABIN ROOF AS THE
CATCHMENT AREA
Understanding different kinds of roofs

After researching about different kinds of roof, i identified that butterfly

roof design will be the most suitable kind of roof design that i can
incorporate in my design system. As the cabin is inclined from the front,
it will be easier for the water to flow in the direction, from front to back
and more water will get collected in the centre of the roof.
