Rachel Zoe Project
SS‘18 Designs

The following designs were part of an application for

an associate designer position for Rachel Zoe
Collection. The project includes five original looks
based upon the aesthetic of the Rachel Zoe house.

As you will see, the collection is inspired by geometric

shapes and motifs which mimic the ‘70s era.

The color scheme follows the prediction of the

contemporary market’s color palette for SS’18 while
also considering common colors from past Rachel Zoe
seasons.
Frilly, Inc.
Customizable Fashion

FoundedintheheartofdowntownLosAngelesin2014,
Frilly, Inc. is a contemporary womenswear fashion
brand committed to creating high-quality one-of-a-kind
customizable garments for its customers. At Frilly, the
premise is simple: the customer knows best. A unique,
technical back-end software with digital renderings
and drop-down options allows customers across the
world to create fashion that is unique to them and their
taste level. It’s easy to go into a major department store
and find a simple, white button-down top, but what if
you could choose how the top was designed? What if
you could choose the length, collar, sleeve design, and
add personalized details to make the garment truly spe
cific to you? What if you had the opportunity to
design the exact shirt, dress, or suit for which
you have been searching? At Frilly, this is possi-
ble. Of course, the garments need to be designed,
fit, and produced, but the customers do have
the freedom to customize each of the garments
themselves. The software allows them a choice of
predestined details from which to choose while
designing their clothing.

Under the Frilly, Inc. umbrella, there are four

distinct brands. Created for the preppy, quirky
customer, One Fifty Third is the brand for the
girl who prefers classic, polished styling with a
fun and unique twist. Herron was created for
the bohemian, chic customer who is more of
a free-spirit. The Herron customer is driven to
ward high-quality intricate textured fabrics and
a color palette of warm, natural earth tones. Saltt
is the brand for the sexy, minimalist customer.
Her styling is more simplistic and timeless. The
fourth and final brand, set to launch in Fall of
2017, Four is even more minimalist than the
Saltt brand. It’s inspiration is derived from Eu
ropean architecture and modern artwork. Her
silhou ettes are clean , simple, and meaningful.

With four brands from which the customer may

choose, there is an aesthetic for everyone.
One & Sun
Herron Spring ‘17 Collection

Inspired by true events, Herron finds it’s inspiration

for Sp ‘17 from Robyn Davidson’s 1,7000 mi voyage
across the Australian outback. On her journey to Alice
Springs, Davidson traveled West with her dog, four
camels, and only the supplies necessary to survive. She
places herself “in the wilderness of her own accord,
rather than as an adjunct to man.” Never afraid of tak-
ing on new adventure and exploring nature, the Her-
ron girl looks to follow in Robyn’s footsteps, creating a
story of her own.

Colors for the season are raw and natural. Warm col-
ors mimicking the desert, a dark yellow and burnt or-
ange give heat to the palette. Of course, an olive green
which can be found in the cacti of the desert can be
found sprinkled throughout the collection. A soft,
delicate pink gives a feminine touch to an otherwise
rugged color scheme, while a harsh black and dark,
intense navy give hommage to a desolate and forlorn
nighttime desert atmosphere.

Tank Top

The Herron customer is a modern bohemian woman.

She is connected to nature and all of its many organic
elements. She prefers loose, flowing garments that are
breathable and practical for all of her adventures. The
fabrics she wears have a rich and unique texture with
a history behind them. Color palettes for each season
are natural, but often have a hint of color suh as golden
spice, olive, or rust. However, no matter the season,
her palette is always grounded in soft nudes and earth
tones.

Saltt Spring ‘17 Collection

The minimalist Saltt girl goes back to the American mob

scene circa the 1983 Brian De Palma thriller “Scarface.”
Inspired by the bold, fearless heroine character Elvira
Hancock, the collection is sleek and sophisticated, yet
surprisingly edgy. Just as Hancock’s character in the
movie is not afraid to stand on her own, neither is the
Frilly minimalist girl. Silhouettes are elevated by deeper
necklines, slimmer bodices, and shorter hemlines, while
staple pieces such as the slim trouser and smoking jack-
et remain prominent.

The color palette for the sesason is literal in its origin

from the tropical Miami atmosphere. A bright, whim-
sical blue can be found in the depths of the Atlantic
Ocean while a bright, abrupt orange channels the hot
Miami heat. A dull, subtle olive brings the palette back
to a natural scheme of creams and tans, tying it in with
the aforementioned bright colors. Introduced in the
previous season, the 1990’s color Vamp, derived from
a bottle of Chanel nailpolish, can be found scattered
throughout the collection. Black, of course, is always an
essential color for the Saltt girl.

Modern Jean Jacket

The Frilly customer who identifies with the brand Saltt

is a minimalist who prefers a clean, but sexy wardrobe.
She is always the first to experiment with a plunging
neckline or scandalous cutouts and isn’t afraid of the
extra attention that comes with it. The Saltt girl is edgy
and daring, confident in who she is. Her color palette is
bold but subtle. Each season, black and white are very
important colors for her. Burgundy and Navy are also
very prominent and, at times, an added pop of a bright
color can be spotted. Her fabrics are mixed between
classic and innovative. Body-conscious fabrics such as
heavy crepe and scuba are always a staple as well as
classic suiting fabrics.

Solarium
Herron Holiday ‘16 Collection

Inspired by the relationship between the sun and the

moon in relation to Earth, the Solarium collection pro-
vides a balance between the day and the night. The sun,
the brightest star in the solar system, provides us the
energy to survive and the light by which we exist. As
seen from Earth, the moon is the second-brightest ob-
ject in the sky, although its surface is actually dark- just
lighter than the night sky. Together they provide a deli-
cate balance within which we live.

For its second season, the Herron brand remains bo-

hemian to its origin, but becomes more simplified and
clean. As always, her silhouettes are fluid and forgiving,
but are much more understated in terms of detail. By
simplifying the**, her garments advance through fabric
usage. Fabrics for the Holiday season are unique and
special which is perfect for parties and seasonal festivi-
ties. Stripes of Lurex provide an understated shine to
an otherwise simple chiffon fabric, while a luminous
shimmer adornes an otherwise ordinary satin. A lux-
uryvelvet can also be found in the mix, flecked with
small, intricate dots.

Colors for the Solarium collection are equal parts warn

and cool. The warmercolors are derived from the radia-
tion of the sun, a deep yellow and burnt orange. A light
pink tone provides these intense colors with a delicate
balance. As the moon accompanies darkness, a dark
navy and black deepen the palette.

Kellwood Project
Spiritual Tribal

This CAD project was created as part of an application

for a design position with Kellwood Western Region for
the brand Jolt.. Research was conducted on
contemporary and junior market trends from which
key color palettes and megatrends were identified.
With research findings in mind, 5 key cut-and-sew
silhouettes were designed for BTS ‘15. While
recognizable fashion trends included over-abundance
of fringe, drapey cardigans without closures, open
ponchos, and dolman-sleeve sweaters to name a few,
silhouettes representing the Kellwood customer
comprised the final silhouettes.

Inspiration for the project was found in unusual tribal

trends which are represented through the use of
modern- day folk art. Ritualistic and spiritual
components hide behind soft geometric patterns and
ornamental emblems. Handcrafted items such as
friendship bracelrm overwise harsh tribal elements
into softer, more
mystical details.

The color palette for the project found inspiration from

Indian henna art. Camel, a key core fabric color for BTS,
keeps textured fabric and prints grounded. Warm
jewel tones such as pomegranate and ruby richen the
color palatte, giving homage to middle-eastern artwork.
Dull shades of mauve and eggplant counteract the
more intense tones by providing a sense of serenity.

Rue 21 Production

This jersey and chiffon peplum tank was purchased

by Rue 21 for Spring 2015 delivery. The screenprint
was created by the Jaya Apparel Group graphics team
and was screened with E&G, an LA-based sublimation
house. Prior to sending artwork and a fully-sewn
sample out to screen, two paper templates were
created. One template was sent as direction for the
screen artist and one was kept in-house for reference.
The graphic was graded for production in sizes XS-XL
appropriately.

Printed Applique Top
Beall’s & Sears Purchase
A special project for Sears department stores, this top
was designed per buyer’s request. Artwork from July
‘14 market was inserted into this short-sleeved
peasant body and a matching applique was created.
To construct this garment, panels of the artwork were
tested and pantone colors were chosen for embroidery
colors. A seperate yoke piece was sent out to embroider
with the embroidery art file and once it was finished,
the garment was fully sewn. Once the garment was
constructed, it was sent to a local sublimation house
for a full garment sublimation process. Finishing
touches included adding rhinestone nailheads to the
embroidered panel. This particular top was created in
three seperate colorways, each which were purchased
by Beall’s and Sears respectively.

Tropical Wings Top
Beall’sPurchase
This 98% polyester/ 2% spandex top with 100%
polyester chiffon overlay was created specifically for
Beall’s deparment stores based on the buyer’s inter-
est in previous artwork. The garment was cut, par-
tially sewn, and sent to a local sublimaton house to be
sublimated. Neck binding was then sewn, completing
the garment construction . Red nailheads were chosen
to match the artwork and placed on the front panel of
the garment. A nailhead card was created and inserted
into the garment tech pack for overseas manufactur-
ing purposes. This garment was sold at Bealls during
Spring 2014.

Dillard’s Tee
Buyer’s Request
This tri-blend knit sample was created per special re-
quest from Dillard’s deparment stores. The ground
color for this garment was DTM a color standard from
another quality of fabric. Several lab dips were con-
ducted in order to achieve the desired fabric color. This
nailhead template was specifically designed for the gar-
ment based on direction from the buyers and creative
experimentation. Nailhead stones were sourced from
a Chinese vendor, but the template was made in-house
to help meet the desired pricepoint for this style.
Crochet Applique Top
Beall’s Purchase

This peasant was requested specifically by the buyer

for Beall’s department stores. For this top, the
garment ground color and artwork originated from
September ‘14 market. The buyer had requested that
an applique be incorporated into another style that had
been shown. To produce this garment, fabric
panels were sublimated to test artwork colors. A
pantone was then chosen to match a color from the
artwork and the applique was dyed to match the
standard. The garment was then cut and sewn with the
applique and sent to a local sublimation house.
Matching rhinestones were then pressed onto the
applique.

Heathered Zip Hoodie

SteinMart Purchase

This heathered knit zip-up hoodie was one of six

created as a special project for Steinmart based on
buyer’s direction to revive a previous best-selling style.
For this project, six knit fabric colorways were chosen
and dyed to match a desired color standard. Contrast
thread color was chosen to match each artwork which
was created by the One World graphic art team.
Garments were put up to cut, then fully sewn and
sublimated before various rhinestone nailhead
templates were created. Each nailhead template was
made individual to it’s respective artwork. Of the six
hoodies that were created, many were purchased by
SteinMart, Belk, Boscov’s and Stage department stores
and were sold both online and in store.
