INTRODUCTION
Compact heat exchangers are characterized by a large heat transfer surface area per unit volume of the
exchanger. The compact heat exchangers have reduced space, less weight, support structure and footprint,
energy requirements. Also this device cost as well as process design, plant layout and processing
conditions, together with low fluid inventory. The compact heat exchangers can be of gas to gas, gas to
liquid or liquid to liquid type. They were used in vehicular heat exchangers, aircraft coolers, air
conditioning systems, and automobile oil coolers, intercoolers of the compressor, and aircraft and space
industry.
Engineers are continually being asked to improve processes and increase efficiency for several heat
exchangers types. These requests may arise as a result of the need to increase process throughput, increase
profitability, or accommodate capital limitations. Processes which use heat transfer equipment most
frequently be improved for these reasons.
Cross flow heat exchanger cross means the flow of the two fluids usually move perpendicular to each other.
There are two types of cross flow heat exchangers (a) Unmixed and (b) Mixed flow [1].
