PROCEDURE :
For this project you will choose objects that represent you. You must have at
least 5 objects and the must fit inside a brown paper bag.
Sketchbook Assignment: Choose at least 5 different objects from around the room or
from home. Challenge yourself! You may NOT draw cell phones or IPods.
 Create a contour line drawing of each object. You can divide your paper into 4 equal sec-
tions- one per section.
 You must have the object in front of you!
 Add value to your objects- each object must have a full range of value.
Project:
1. Using a ruler, create a 1 inch border.
2. Arrange your objects using the Rules of
Composition. The object needs to be
sitting in front of you; NO PICTURES.
Your composition must follow these
requirements:
-70% Positive Space
-Overlapping
-Touches 3 sides of the Picture
Plane
-Strong, direct light source with at
least 6 different values
-Include your Brown Paper Bag
3. Begin by drawing the objects contour
lines LIGHTLY.
4. Using a constant light source (lamps
will be set up around the room) begin
to at value to your drawing. Fill in the
areas of value according to what you
see, not what you think you see.
 Remember to define the shapes using
value and contrast instead of outlines
(objects in real life do not have black
outlines).
 There should be no outlines when the
drawing is complete.
 There should be a full range of value; at least 6 different shades of gray. Do not forget to
add cast shadows to anchor your work.
