Em uma Manchester em acelerado processo de urbanização e industria-
lização, o sentimento de perda de contato com a paisagem natural era
amenizado pela possibilidade de estar, mesmo que por alguns minutos,
em uma verdejante paisagem dos Alpes. O efeito contramelancólico
não deveria ser diferente na recepção das cenas históricas que seguiam I,

Por volta da década de 1850 parecia haver uma perfeita fusão entre
as preocupações com o realismo histórico e as apresentações do Dio-
rama. No prefácio de um guia impresso para orientar o visitante no

Os empresários afirmavam ainda que a iniciativa havia sido inspirada
no grande sucesso de um diorama composto por múltiplos painéis in-
titulado "Correio terrestre para a Índia", exibido mais de 1.600 vezes,
tendo atingido um público de mais de 400 mil pessoas." Sabe-se ainda
que os painéis do Diorama das campanhas de Wellington foram pintados
pelos proprietários, Thomas Grieve, William Telbin e John Absolon; os
animais, por Alfred Corbould; e a batalha de Waterloo, com dois painéis
que encerram a série de 29, por George Danson e filhos. O Diorama
contava ainda com música composta e arranjada por Rophino Lacy e com ponmlkjihgfe
descriptive lectures ministradas por J.H. Stocqueler. Na apresentação
figuram ainda agradecimentos a John Burnett pelos esboços do campo
de Waterloo, a Stocqueler por "informações valiosas" sobre a Índia e o
Oriente e a Richard Ford pelos esboços feitos na Espanha. Esse último
é o mesmo que assina a autoria do guia e deve ser o responsável pelos
longos textos explicativos que acompanham cada ilustração represen-
tativa do Diorama. Os painéis apresentam a biografia de Wellington
desde seu nascimento, passando por sua atuação na Índia, nas Guerras
Peninsulares, culminando, obviamente, na Batalha de Waterloo.
O trabalho de pesquisa e produção teria durado dois anos, nos quais:
