pay for others, but with the emergence of the welfare society, other comfortable places begin to
appear within the reach of the pockets of all citizens. The evolution is so spectacular that currently
almost all people from developed countries have access to travel and stay in decent hotels, which
gives rise to one of the most powerful industries in the world, which is tourism that is related to
the hotel industry.

The nineteenth century witnessed a great economic expansion, followed by an industrial and
scientific revolution; tourism was one of the main beneficiaries by the end of the 20th century and
positioned itself as the largest industry in the world.

In 1988, 392 million people were mobilized, mainly at three times of the year: summer, Christmas
and Easter. In 1992, the Maastricht Treaty was signed, which provides for the free movement of
people, goods and capital.

In the field of tourism statistics, it dates back to 1937, when the Council of the League of Nations
took a first step in the unification of tourist criteria at an international level, recommending a
definition of "international tourist."
