Learning Objectives:

By the end of the lesson students will be able to:

1. Identify the 3-4 components of a plant or flower
2. Identify the 3 things that plants need to grow
Materials Needed:
1. Plant life cycle/what a plant needs to grow poster
2. Germination of a seed video
3. Plant parts worksheet
4. Plant life cycle worksheet
Introduction:
● Introduce the class to the students as “From the Ground Up.”
● Use the life cycle poster to open the discussion about how plants grow. Their life cycle
and the three things they need to grow.
● Play the short time-lapse video of the sprouting seed. Discuss how the poster and video
are related.
● Follow up by asking, from what they have seen thus far, the video and the poster, what
they think plants need to grow strong. Sun, Soil, Water.
Lesson:
1. This lesson is aimed to get the students thinking about where their food comes from (the
farm) and how plants, just like them, need certain inputs to grow. Feel free to draw a
diagram or add to the poster.
2. Start by asking the students what they think they need to grow strong.
3. Bridge the conversation from the introduction and draw a parallel between what plants
need to grow and what the students need:
a. Soil - has nutrients for the plant to grow = nutrients in food for humans
(specifically plants/fruits/vegetables) to grow strong
b. Water = Hydration for both plants and humans - *We are made up of
approximately 60% water! Stay hydrated.
c. Sun - Specific to plants. Human need sun but in less of a direct way. The sun
helps plants grow and we need plants to live. They produce oxygen and are
great food sources of vitamins and minerals!
4. Pass out coloring activity and have students color the part of the plant. This can also be
connected back to what plants need to grow:
a. Roots should be colored brown - absorb the nutrients in the soil
b. Stem should be colored green - carries the nutrients and water to the leaves and
flower
c. Leaves should be colored green-produces food for the plant
d. Flowers can be colored with any color of students choice- produces seeds so
that a new plant can grow

Review:
● Have children gather around in a circle and ask them what they learned today/what their
favorite part was.
● Review what a plant needs to grow and compare that to what they need to grow.
○ Soil which provides nutrient = food for the children to grow
○ Water which provides hydration = same for the children
○ Sun - specific to plants, can make comparison that it provides energy to the plant
similarly to the way food provides energy to them
● Review the parts of a plant using their colored handouts as well as the poster
○ The roots - highlight importance of the soil
○ The stem - carries the nutrients to the flower
○ The flower - proof of good nutrition
○ The leaf
