India’s dominance at the Asian
youth Chess Championship held at
Chiangmai, Thailand is amply reflected
in the rich haul of 68 medals overall, in
all the three formats and team event put
together. This was largely due to the
sustained efforts by the AICF with the invaluable support
from the Government of India. It is heartening to note
that young chess talents are cropping up not only from
big cities but also from small towns across the country.
Young IM Praggnanandaa achieved his second GM
norm in smooth style at the 4th Fischer Memorial GM
tournament in Heraklion, Greece and he is on course
to achieving his final GM norm soon. IM Harsha
Bharathakoti became champion of Kathmandu Open in
Nepal and Kaustuv Kundu won Sonargaon International
tournament held in Bangladesh last month. S.Lakshana,
a six-year-old prodigy from Tamilnadu, who is the reigning
National Under-7 Champion, won the under-7 girls title in
the FIDE World Schools Championship held in Durres,
Albania.Reports on the above events with photographs
are presented in the centre pages of this issue.
On the home front GM Lalith Babu, the reigning national
champion in classical chess has added yet another
feather to his cap when he became the National Rapid
Champion in Ahmedabad in the first week of May 2018.
IM Dinesh Sharma won National Blitz title. Reports on
these two events will be presented in the next issue.

Hatsun Idhayam 4th SCS FIDE Rated Chess Tournament,Sivakasi
Laxman wins at Sivakasi

The fourth edition of the Hatsun – Idhayam
SCS FIDE Rated Chess Tournament was or-
ganised by Sivakasi Chess Sparklers at the
MepcoSchlenk Engineering College Sivakasi,
a leading engineering institution in India.
Two hundred and eighty seven participants,
mostly from Tamil Nadu besides Karnataka,
Kerala, Railways, BSNL and Pudhucherry took
part in the 8 round Swiss league event. The
time control was 90 minutes to each player
with an increment of 30 seconds per move.
Grandmaster RR Laxman of ICF hadthe priv-
ilege of heading the ranking list, followed by
international master P. Shyaamnikhil also of
ICF, AL Muthaiah and international master
VAV Rajesh of Tamil Nadu.
Results were on expected lines in the first two
rounds, with higher rated players outwitting
their weaker opponents. In the third round,
eleventh seeded international arbiter S. Ga-
nesh Babu of Madurai was held to a draw by
unheralded NithishMuthukumaran. In the
fourth round, seventh seeded former national
Rapid champion Ram S Krishnan of BSNL
drew with M. Dinesh Rajan of Karaikudi and
S. Prasanna of Chennai lost to lower rated
S. Suganthan of Tirunelveli. Four players –
RR Laxman, Rajesh VAV, IM elect Kunal and
OT Anil Kumar of Kerala who upset IM BT
Muralikrishnan of Railways led the field with
five points each at the end of the fifth round.
The encounter between Laxman and Kunal
ended without any decisive result on the
top board of the sixth round and same was
the result on the second board between OT
Anil Kumar of Kerala and VAV Rajesh. IM
Shyaamnikhil and AL Muthaiah joined the
above four players in the lead with 5.5 points
by beating IA S. Ganesh Babu of Madurai
and SA Kannan of Karaikudi. The number of
players in the lead was reduced to the top
three seeds – Laxman, Shyaam and Muthai-
ah, as they registered wins over IM Rajesh,
OT Anil Kumar and Kunal respectively in the
penultimate seventh round.
The final round, Laxman quickly settled for
a draw andMuthaiah followed them out of
the hall by splitting the point with Hrithick-
kesh PR of Neyveli paving for a three way
tie for the first three places with 7 points
each. When tiebreaks were applied, Laxman
emerged winner, followed by Muthaiah and
Shyaamnikhil. Laxman received Rs.70000/-,
Muthaiah collected Rs.50000 and Rs.35000/-
were warded to Shyaam.
Dr. S, Arivazhagan, Principal, MepcoSchlenk
Engineering College was the chief guest for
the inauguration as well as prize distribution
function. Top board games were displayed
live on prominent chess websites, including
aicf.in and chessbomb.com. A booklet with
a compilation of several enjoyable games
annotated by the leading players like Vishy-
Anand, Magnus Carlsen, Bobby Fischer, Garry
Kasparov and other stars was presented to
all the players. About 50 players and parents
exhibited their skills in a special talent show
on 23rd evening. Mepco Schlenk Engineering
College provided very good infrastructure
and facilities for the smooth conduct of the
tournament. Single and double rooms were
provided to players and parents at no extra
cost and sumptuous non veg. food was pro-
vided at a nominal cost of Rs.100/- per day.

M.Pranesh wins title

The 1st IITM FIDE rated open chess tourna-
ment, organised by the students of Indian
Institute of Technology, Madras from 13th to
15th April 2018. IM C R G Krishna of South
Western Railway was the top seeded player,
followed by Kunal M of TN, Phoobalan of ICF
and Ram S Krishnan of BSNL. A total of 290
players from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka,
AP, Telangana, Maharashtra, Pondicherry,
Jharkhand, Bihar and Gujarat participated in
the 6 round event.
As far as the tournament is concerned, with
just six rounds for too many players, a lot of
Rupankar Nath (Winner) receiving the trophy from IM Atanu Lahiri, Secretary, BCA and joint
action was anticipated, as even losing half

a point would mean so much. There were
no major upsets until 5th round, other than
44th West Bengal State Women Chess Championship 2018, Kolkata Krishnaraaju’s successive victories against
higher rated players Rathneesh and Chandak-
Sivam on 3rd and 4th rounds. In round five,
12 year old Pranesh defeated second seeded
Kunal M and VenkatSundaram defeated Ram
S.Krishnan.
After the penultimate round, it was five
players sharing the lead with 5/5. There
was a possibility of three-way tie for the top
honours, but the top board players decided
to split the points resulting in a five-way tie
for the top place between IM C R G Krishna,
FM M.Vinoth Kumar, Pranesh, Prasanna and
Venkat Sundaram. According to the tie break
rules, Pranesh M of Tamilnadu won the 1st
IITM FIDE Rated Open Chess tournament
with a cash award of Rs.30,000/- and glitter-
ing trophy. Krishna CRG of South Western
Railway came second and Venkat Sundaram

Delhi State Open FIDE Rated Chess Cham-
pionahip-2018 was held at Jawaharlal
Nehru Stadium, Lodhi Road, New Delhi
from 9th April to 15th April 2018.
A total number of 168 players which
included 111 International rated from
across Delhi participated in the champi-
onship and served as selection event for
Delhi team for the forthcoming Nation-
al Championship. The event which was
spread over seven days and was played
under Swiss System with 9 rounds with
the time control of 90 minutes and 30
seconds increment from move 1. The
total prize fund of the championship was
Rs. 1,50,000/-.
Santu Mondal started as top seed and
the event progressed on expected lines.
At the end of ninth round, three players
tied for the pole position with 7½ points
but better tie break score helped top seed
Santu Mondal to finish as champion while
Akshay Anand and Harshit Pawar finished
as first and second runner-up respectively.
Vidhi Bhartiya was adjudged as best fe-
male player while H S Verma was declared
best veteran player. Harshiel Sehgal, Na-
mish Sharma and Shaunak Sood finished
best among Under-15, Under-10 and un-
rated categories respectively.
At a colourful closing ceremony, Smt.
Swati Verma, eminent social worker of
Delhi gave away the cash prizes and tro-
phies to the winners along with Shri. AK
Verma, Secretary Delhi Chess Association.

Memorial All India Fide Open Rating
Chess Championship 2018 organized by
Khorda District Chess Association held
at Empire Hotel, Bhubaneswar, from 10th
to 14th April 2018 . The Tournament was
inaugurated by Chief Guest Santanu
Mohanty (OAS), B.D.O. Bhubaneswar by
making the customary first move on the
board .Also present on the occasion were
Shri Subhasis Patanaik, Org. Secretary &
Secretary , KDCA, Shri G. C. Mahapatra,
Treasurer, AOCA, & Saroj Kishore Behera,
Treasurer, KDCA .
A total 249 players (169 Rated players)
from 2 Federations( India & Bangladesh)
took part in the tournament. The venue
was very beautiful and air conditioned
and all amenities were extended to all the
players as well as guardians also.
The tournament was played under swiss
system format 9 rounds. International
chess set was used and digital chess
clocks in every board.All the organizers
and players were very supportive and
cooperative.
In the 3rd round 2nd seeded IM Rajesh
VAV of Tamil Nadu drew with Local Oriya
player Srinabas Mishra. In the 5th round
Bengal Boy Arpan Das beat local star
Smaraki Mohanty of Bhubaneswar in the
end game. In the 7th round top seeded IM
Somak Palit beat 2nd seeded IM Rajesh
VAV by sacrificing Queen for a rook and
a bishop.

The 5th edition of Kurukshetra Open Fide
Rating Chess Tournament 2018 organized
by Guardians of Greater Dibrugarh Chess
Players held at DHSK College, from26th
to 30th April 2018.The Tournament was
inaugurated by Chief Guest Shri Prasanta
Phukan, MLA, Dibrugarh by making his
first move on the board and also present
were Dr. Sashi Saikia Principal, DSHK
College, Commandant P.K Singh, Shri An-
upjyoti Bharali, DHSK College, Mr. Gunin
Dihingia, Advisor, Mrs. Oly Rajkumar, Org.
Secretary. Players meeting was arranged
just before the starting of tournament.
The other necessary technical matters
were decided and appeals committee was
formed.
A total 163 players (104 Rated players)
from 2 Federations ( India & Bangladesh)
took part in the tournament. The venue
was very beautiful and all amenities were
provided to the players as well as guard-
ians also. The tournament was played
under swiss system format 9 rounds. In-
ternational chess set was used and digital
chess clocks in every board. All the or-
ganizers and players were very supportive
and cooperated with each other.
In the 4th round Souradip Deb of Tripura
beat top seeded Y Dhanbir Singh of Mani-
pur in quick play finish. Ranjit Chutia lost
to Bhogen Singh R K of Manipur. At the end
of final round games Nandan Buragohain
of Guwahati clinched the Championship
Title & richer by Rs. 30000/-. Souradip

Sakshi Chitlange wins at Sangli

The tournament was organized by Nutan-
BuddhibalMandal,Sangli. The duration of
the tournament was of 5 days starting from
24th April 2018 to 28th April 2018. On the
first day, the opening ceremony was at
11:00am followed by the first round. Two
rounds were conducted per day for 4 days
and one last round on fifth day followed by
the prize distribution.
This is a unique tournament which is going
on for 14 years, where no women player is
charged any entry fee. All the players have
free accommodation and all the title holders
receive 2000 rupees appearance money.
The opening ceremony was graced by
Superintendent Kirti Shedage, Chief Ar-
biter IA Rajendra Shidore; Mr.Chintamani
Limaye, Secretary of Nutan Buddhibal
Mandal; Mr.Ashok Telang, senior player;
Mr.Chidambar Kotibhaskar, Vice Presi-
dentof Nutan Buddhibal Madal and Mrs.
Smita Kelkar,Treasurer of Nutan Buddhibal
Mandal.
Total of 124 girls participated in the tour-
nament out of which 60 players were rated
players. Players from 7 different states
participated in this tournament. Women
International Master Sakshi Chitlange hav-
ing the rating of 2122 was the top seeded
player followed by Vishwa Shah(1773) and
Deodhar Vrushali(1700). Throughout the
tournament WIM Sakshi Chitlange secured
her first rank in the stand, with Deodhar
and Vishwa fighting for second. A surprising
game made Sakshi settle for half points
against Vishwa Shah.

After round 5 DeodharVrushali took the
lead with half points extra in the Buchholz,
but IM Sakshi took over after win against
Vrushali Deodhar. During the final rounds
Parikh Urvi, HombalKhushi, Gayatri Rajput,
Bhosale Shruti and Patel Naziya contested
for latter ranks.

nament 2018 was organized by My Brain
Institute LLP, Aurangabad under the aegis of
All Marathi Chess Association, from 28th to
29th April 2018, at Universal School, MIDC
Road, Aurangabad. The Total Number of
participants were 314 which included 4 GMs,
11 IMs, 1 WGM and 2 FMs. The total tally of
rated players was 171.
The tournament was inaugurated at the
hands of Ms. Seema Gupta, Principal, Uni-

Praggnanandhaa achieves his second GM norm in Greece
Praggnanandhaa became an IM at the age of 10 years
and 10 months. Sergey Karjakin held the record
for the youngest GM in the world - 12 years and 7
months. With nearly one year and nine months to go
it seemed as if Pragg would break Karjakin’s record.
However, it was not to be and although the young
lad from Chennai crossed 2500 Elo mark, he could
achieve just one GM norm. Many people felt that it
was the pressure on his shoulders of becoming that
youngest GM in the world that was not letting Pragg
play his natural game. Now that we are past that phase, Pragg is showing his free flow-
ing game and achieved his second GM norm in smooth style at the 4th Fischer Memorial
GM norm tournament in Heraklion, Greece.

Kaustuv Kundu wins Sonargaon International FIDE Rating
Chess Tournament 2018, Bangladesh
Kaustuv won his third tournament of the year when he scored 8.0/9 with a performance
rating of 2482, edged ahead by 0.5 point in
Tie-break 2. Kaustuv’s first tournament win of
this year is New Year Open 2018. Bangladesh
no.1, GM Ziaur Rahman was adjudged as the
first runner up of the tournament as he missed
the championship due to the earlier mentioned
reason. FM Mohammad Fahad Rahman scored
7.0/9 and finished at 3rd position due to a better
Tie-Break score, ahead of IM Abu Sufian Shakil
and FM Uddin Md. Saif, who also scored the same
points. The tournament took place in Sonargaon
Royal Resort in Sonargaon, Narayanganj in Bang-
ladesh from 20th to 24th March 2018.
Lakshana wins World Schools Under-7 title
Thanks to winning the National Schools under-7 Lakshana quali-
fied for the World Schools 2018. In the under-7 section you don’t
really know what to expect. The players are not rated, they have
no fear, they can get bored anytime, and they can even produce
some gems! So, when Lakshana went to Albania for the World
Schools 2018 no one knew what would happen. But being the
national schools champion, she definitely had a good chance.
Things didn’t start so well for Lakshana. She lost to a fellow
Indian Anaishaa Nahar in the very first round but she recovered
and went on winning one game after another. Before you knew
it, she had won all her games and ended the tournament with 8.0/9! At the age of six
Lakshana is showing skills which players much above her age find it hard to grasp.

Fide Rated Chess Tournament organized by
Baba Kalinath Chriatable Trust was held at
Swarnaprastha School, Sonipat from 17-22
April 2018. This Rupees Six Lakhs Eighty
Thousand prize money event attracted a total
number of 298 players which includes Three
Grandmasters, Six International Masters,
One Women International Master, One Fide
Master and 221 international rated players
from different parts of India and two foreign
federations. The event conducted under
Swiss system with 10 rounds and the time
control was 90 minutes and 30 second incre-
ment from move 1.
In a befitting opening ceremony, Shri. Suren-
der Pawar famous social worker inaugurat-
ed the event in presence of Shri. Naresh
Sharma, Secretary the Haryana Chess As-
sociation. Grandmaster Himanshu Sharma
of Haryana got the top billing. The entire
tournament saw lots of ups and downs as
well as grueling battles over the board.
After the finish of 10th Round, better tie
break score helped GM Himanshu Sharma to
lift the Sardar Prakash Singh Memorial tro-
phy and pocketed a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh.
FM Mitrabha Guha satisfied with Rs. 70,000
while GM Thipsay Praveen M finished at third
position to secure Rs. 40,000 as cash prize.

prize of Rs.25,000, Pankaj Sharma of Punjab

Masters of the past-88 George Koltanowski

George Koltanowski (17.9.903-5.2.2000) was a Belgian-born Amer-
ican chess player, promoter, and writer. He was informally known as
"Kolty". Koltanowski set the world's blindfold record on 20 Septem-
ber 1937, in Edinburgh, by playing 34 chess games simultaneously
while blindfolded, making headline news around the world. He also
set a record in 1960 for playing 56 consecutive blindfold games at
ten seconds per move.

Born into a Polish Jewish family in Antwerp, Belgium, Koltanowski

learned chess by watching his father and brother play. He took up
the game seriously at the age of 14, and became the top Belgian
player.He was Belgian Chess Champion in 1923, 1927, 1930, and
1936. However, Koltanowski became better known for touring and
giving simultaneous exhibitions and blindfold displays. Based upon
his results during the period 1932–37, Professor Arpad Elo gave Koltanowski a rating of 2450
in The Rating of Chess Players. Koltanowski was awarded the International Master title in 1950
when the title was first officially established by FIDE, and he was awarded an honorary Grand-
master title in 1988. However, Koltanowski's record as a tournament player was not especially

He directed the 1947 U.S. Open in Corpus Christi, Texas, using the Swiss system for the first 1st IITM FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament,Madras
time ever in a U.S. Open chess event. After that, he traversed the country, holding Swiss sys-
tem tournaments everywhere. Before long, the Swiss system was adopted as the standard for
most chess tournaments in America. Koltanowski thereafter toured the United States tirelessly
for years, running chess tournaments and giving simultaneous exhibitions everywhere.On 4
December 1960, in San Francisco, California, Koltanowski played 56 consecutive games blind-
folded, with only ten seconds per move. He won fifty and drew six games. Koltanowski still
holds the record in the Guinness Book of Records.

Possessed of an incredibly powerful memory, Koltanowski would give blindfold exhibitions, playing
several games simultaneously. In Edinburgh in 1937 Koltanowski set a record by simultaneously
playing 34 games of blindfold chess. In 1940, the United States Consul in Cuba saw Koltanowski
giving a chess exhibition in Havana and decided to grant him a U.S. visa. Koltanowski became
the chess columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, which carried his chess column every day
for the next 52 years until his death, publishing an estimated 19,000 columns.The FIDE named
him International Arbiter in 1960.

Perhaps Koltanowski's most remarkable accomplishment was that he made his living entire-
ly from chess. He wrote many books; his best-known work is Adventures of a Chess Master,
published by David McKay Co. in 1955. In it, he recounts primarily his tours giving blindfolded
