PMI PROCEDURE
FOR DEMINERALIZATION PACKAGE

1.0 PURPOSE

This procedure defines basic requirements for conducting Positive Material Identification (PMI) test to
verify that the elemental composition of Alloy Materials is as specified in the purchase document, and
that the materials, equipment are marked and stamped to indicate the proper alloy. PMI is the
process by which alloy composition is verified and is independent of any material certification and
material control requirements. PMI shall not be considered a substitute for material certification.

2.0 SCOPE

The following items shall be conducted Positive Material Identification (PMI) testing and reports shall be
included into final documentation.

4.0 REQUIREMENTS

4.1 Pressure Components

All pressure components shall be PMI tested as per mentioned in above section 2.0

4.3 Weld Examination

Welds shall be tested after removal of slag or oxide from the weld surface. On double-sided solid alloy
weld joints, both inside and outside weld surfaces shall be tested.
4.4 Personnel Qualification
Personnel operating the test instrument shall be registered with the Radiation Protection Inspectorate
and fully conversant with NITON XL or XLP series, X-Ray Fluorescence Analyzer’s Operation Manual.

5.0 TIME OF EXAMINATION

The positive material identification checks shall be performed during and / or after fabrication is
completed. Equipment internals and other items, shall be checked and verified just prior to installation to
avoid any substitutions. All checks shall be performed prior to any required heat treatment or other
special processing, at seller's option, but shall not be performed until all welding is completed.

6.0 METHODS OF IDENTIFICATION

6.1 General
The instruments or methods used for positive material identification shall have the capability to
Identify positively and to provide a quantitative measurement of the alloying elements listed in
Section 7.0.

6.2 Identification Equipment

6.2.1 For PMI verification, the following methods or their close equivalents shall be used and
also note that any one of instruments as below mentioned in (i) shall be used.
(i) Niton XL-800 series or XLP series multi-element analyser (XRF)
Texas Nuclear Analyser Models 9266/9277
Spectroport or Spectrotest 'F'
Metorex X-met 2000/3000
Metorex Arc-Met

6.2.2 Chemical spot tests, magnets, alloy sorters and methods are not performed.

6.2.3 All PMI instruments shall be calibrated, in accordance with the instrument manufacturer’s
recommendation, at the start of each working shift as a minimum.
6.2.4 Certified samples, with full traceability, of "known" alloy materials shall be available for use as a random
spot check on the instrument calibration. These samples are in addition to any standard manufacturer's
calibration.sample.

6.2.5 Surfaces to be examined shall be prepared by light grinding or abrasive paper and solvent cleaning.
Evidence of ‘arc burn’ resulting from the examination shall be removed by light grinding or abrasive
paper.
6.2.6 When the portable analyzer is unable to identify the material, an approved laboratory method shall be
used to analyze the composition of the material. The laboratory procedures for sample removal,
identification and traceability to the original material shall be submitted to Purchaser for review prior to
start of testing.

7.0 ALLOY ACCEPTANCE

All materials shall comply with the requirements of the applicable material specification. Materials shall
be verified to ensure the correct major alloying elements and the correct percentages of each element
where applicable. A deviation of the alloying elements / or absence of the alloying elements with
respect to the required material specification shall be considered non acceptable. A detailed Chemical
analysis may be performed in a laboratory for the materials having very nominal deviation of Alloying
Elements from the acceptable limits, as a referee method, before rejecting the material. In such cases
a final decision to accept or reject is left to the Purchaser / Company. All rejected
materials that are identified shall be quarantined until an investigation is carried out.
As a minimum, the elements listed in Table 2 (given below) shall be verified.

8.0 TRACEABILITY
PMI accepted material should be identified as "PMI". The preferred marking methods are low stress
stamps or vibra-etch. If not possible by this method, material shall be identified by permanent marker.
The marking shall be carried out with a water-soluble material that contains no harmful substance,
such as metallic pigments, sulphur or chlorides which would attack or otherwise harmfully effect
austenitic or nicked alloy steels at ambient or elevated temperatures.
