WHAT IMPACT CAN ONE INNOVATION HAVE ON THE WORLD?
EXPLAIN THE CREATION AND IMPACT OF A MEDICAL ADVANCEMENT
How have medical innovations
effected society?
PROJECT GOAL:
You will create an interactive museum display for a
children’s museum (upper elementary/lower
middle school) that visually represents a medical
innovation and its effects before 1900. This display
will include collecting and evaluating data from
primary and secondary resources, documentation,
a written and verbal explanation and
contextualization of the innovation within historical
civilizations.
The display should convey the following:
1) what the breakthrough was and how it was
discovered/developed
2)how the ailment was dealt with prior to the
breakthrough and how the ailment is dealt with now
3) what would be the impact on the biological
system and society if this medical breakthrough had
not occurred.

DAILY CLASS REQUIREMENTS
1. Each group will have their own tables,
cupboard, and supply box to keep their
project materials. This area needs to be
clean and organized before any group
member will leave for the day.
2. Each day you are required to turn in your
group timeline. This will help you stay on
task and hold each other accountable. This
will also help to inform us of your
individual role in this project.
GETTING STARTED
1. Share your research. What did you learn?
What did you find the most interesting?
Did you find something not on the list?
2. As a group, pick one innovation you would
want to explore deeper. You will need to
get this approved by a teacher.
3. You will need to set a group project goal,
group roles to divide the work, and a
timeline to keep you on track. Set up group
expectations and review the collaboration
rubric. If you have any issues in your group,
please see a teacher immediately.

gets to checkpoints and gets signature)

RESEARCH
Your group needs to research the following
questions and put the answers on a placard for
your museum display. While this list of questions is
mandatory, you are not limited to just these
questions. In fact, you are encouraged to explore
and find out more.
1. When and where was the innovation
created? (in detail)
2. What are the causes for the innovation?
Why was it important for this innovation to
be created? What was life like before the
innovation?
3. What were and are the effects of the
innovation? What benefits and
consequences resulted from this innovation
– then and now?
4. How did the innovation change, develop, or
evolve?
5. How does the innovation affect the
biological system?
6. What organ systems benefit or are
involved? Which specialized cells and
organelles are involved?
7. Hypothesize how life would be today
without the innovation.

As a group, you need
1. a rough draft of all written statements for
or on the exhibit. There is a 400 word
minimum. These must be approved before
any further work can be done.
2. Art-Visual representation on Placard
Observational drawing representing your
innovation using Value- Must include
Highlight, ¼ tone, ½ tone, base tone,
reflected light, and cast shadow. 3
thumbnails sketches for composition (rule
of thirds, focal point, and breaking the
picture plane).
3. Biology-An Infographic visual
representation displaying body system and
specialized cells affected and summary of
how affected.
4. a plan for the interactive elements of the
display. These must be approved before
any further work can be done.
5. to draw/make blueprints for the museum
piece which include measurements and a
specific list of supplies. These must be
approved before any further work can be
done.
6. to evaluate your planned museum exhibit
using the rubrics. After your group
evaluates, make any necessary
adjustments.
7. to create/revise your timeline. This will
allow your group to see if the plan is
feasible. It will also allow teachers to know
what materials or extra space is needed for
each day. This must be approved before
any further work can be done.
