Implication of Using English Language for the Learning Ability of Senior High

School Students of Our Lady of Fatima University

Introduction

In the previous centuries many countries colonized the “Pearl of the Orient seas”
or known as Philippines which these countries left cultures, beliefs and etc. that truly
affect the living of the Filipinos that still can be seen here at the present time. One of
these countries is America that invades the Philippines for a few decades that until now
control Filipinos in terms of music, attire and language.

English is the universal language because it serves as a way to have effective


communication and connection of people from different nation.

As the time goes by, the English language became prevalent at the said country
and because of this a lot of schools use it as a medium for teaching in different subjects
like Science, Mathematics and Philosophy. Through the use of this language it left
positive and negative effects on students learning.

Body

According to the study of Amancio L. (2000) that entitled “Attitudes of students,


teachers and parents of RVM Schools in Metro Manila Toward English and Filipinos as
Medium of Instruction” was founded by the researchers in the article of Associate
Professor Romeo Y. Martin, of the University of the East, titled “English as Medium of
Instructions in the Philippines .“ The students and the teachers are more favorable on
choosing in English Language as a useful thing in terms of teaching because it is easy to
utilize on explaining an ideas and conceptual works. Meanwhile, those parents are more
favorable on choosing Filipino language because in this Language they can be impart
those information’s and by this language they understand each other. It is a study that the
researchers found that there’s a conflict for what attitude of the parents, students, and
teachers regards in using English Language as a medium in teaching.

Base from the thesis of Acelejado (1996), there is no such result from other
researches that proves English, as a medium, should be used in teaching Math and there
is no such big effect when it comes to the level of the student's understanding in Math.
There is no strong evidence regarding if English language is used in teaching, The
students has a good attitude in terms of studying mathematics. As the present days The
teachers and The researchers focus on using Filipino Language as a medium for teaching
Mathematics.

Base in the experience of the researcher and other teacher in the mathematics,
there are students that don’t understand the direction in English so the teachers will
explain it using Filipino Language.

The article of the Associate Professor Romeo Y Martin of the University of the
East entitled “English as Medium of Instruction in the Philippines” stated that many
teachers believe that if English Language will be used in teaching there are possibility
that it will affect the intellectual learning of the students, retention of the culture and the
economy of the other country.

Methods

The researchers used descriptive methodology for the study. The researchers want
to know if using English language as a medium for teaching is effective for the senior
high school students of Our Lady of Fatima University. The researchers used survey
questionnaires as an instrument for gathering data to know if using English language as a
medium for teaching in subjects like Mathematics, Science and UCSPOL.

The researchers chose 100 respondents for this study from the strand of ABM,
STEM, GAS and HUMMS as their source of data. The respondents were chose based
from their ability in studying because the researchers believe that they will meet the
standards needed in this research.

The researchers used survey-questionnaire as an instrument for gathering data in


this study. The researchers believe that it is the most compatible instrument on describing
how effective it is to use English as a medium in teaching students.

The questionnaire is divided into two parts. The first part is composed of personal
questions needed to be answer by the respondents. While the second part has 10
questions and they will answer these questions by checking the box that corresponds to
their answer. The questions were based from the problems in this study.

This research is just a starting point, and not necessary, to obtain the complex statistics
method to check the data. The researchers use this kind of statistic equation

Discussion

1. There are 100 respondents in the research. 17% of them answered that they are

Excellent in using English language in Science. 31% of them answered that they

are very good. 36% of them are good and 16% of them answered that they are not

good at using English language in Science.

2. There are 100 respondents in the research. 23% of them answered that they are

Excellent in using English language in Mathematics. 21% of them answered that

they are very good. 39% of them are good and 17% of them answered that they

are not good at using English language in Mathematics.


3. There are 100 respondents in the research. 21% of them answered that they are

Excellent in using English language in UCSPOL. 40% of them answered that they

are very good. 33% of them are good and 6% of them answered that they are not

good at using English language in UCSPOL.
