Blessing of the Backpacks will be August 5 during worship.
William Seo will give a report of the HEMEfund on August 12 in fellowship hall from
9:30 – 10:20 am. There will be a time of farewell for the Seo family as they will
be moving to Boston.
The new school year kick-off will be August 19 with a pancake breakfast.
Classes begin on August 26 and meet from 9:30 – 10:20 am. There are classes for
preschool (3 – 5 yr olds), elementary, middle school (confirmation), high
school, and adults. Watch for details.
Parents’ Night Out w ill be on August 10. Childcare and supper are offered
from 5
T3EM w ill be August 21 w ith supper and childcare beginning at 5:15 pm .
The family prayer group meets on Mondays at 11:00 am at the church. If you can-
not attend yet have needs for prayer, please email kaysf122@aol.com.
The Vigo County School System is starting on August 8. Because of the positive reputation that
has been built between Central Presbyterian Church and Deming Elementary School, the principal
would like our Kids Hope mentoring to commence the week of August 27 – 31, 2018, which is
much earlier than in past years.
We anticipate a great need for mentors this year. We are aware that many members of Central,
who would make wonderful mentors, are concerned about the weekly commitment. Consistency
is crucial in Kids Hope. Yet, it is understood that people have extended vacations, trips to see
and take care of family. We have more “substitutes” signed up this year, experienced mentors,
who can and will fill in for you for a couple weeks, or even a month while you may be gone.
When you exclude holiday breaks, the VCSC schedule has only 33 weeks for Kids Hope. Could
you commit to 25 weeks, if substitutes would fill in for you during the other weeks? Please con-
sider this option. We really need every mentor possible this year, for we are the victims of God’s
success. Please prayerfully consider this opportunity to bless and serve a child!

A motion to change the order of the day so that session could hear the report of the Pastor Nominating Committee
was approved by consensus. Chairperson Leanne Holder thanked the committee for its work and noted that they
have reviewed about 40 applications and more are still arriving. The committee heard a candidate at a neutral pulpit
during June. A motion to call a congregational meeting for Sunday, August 5, 2018, for the purpose of approving a call
to a candidate was made and seconded. Leanne and the other members of the PNC provided what basic information
about this candidate they felt they were able to share. PNC member comments included

Leanne shared details of the proposed terms of call and plans for the August 4-5 weekend. Judy Duffy thanked the
PNC on behalf of the church and the motion was approved. Session also approved a motion to postpone serving of
the Lord’s Supper from August 5 to August 12. The letter to the congregation will go out July 27th and the meeting will
be announced on July 29 and again on August 5.
The moderator then read from Romans, tying lessons of patience to our search.
At this time, session reviewed the interim pastor’s contract. A motion was made and approved (with Kevin’s agree-
ment) to amend Kevin Buchanan’s contract to provide a 60 day notification of termination as of July 14 with a 30 day
continuation, effectively reversing the original terms of the contract.
Discussion then centered on the best starting date for a new pastor, given Labor Day the first Sunday in September,
Kevin’s last Sunday with goodbye celebration on September 9, the September 12 session meeting, and Holypalooza on
September 16. A motion was made and approved after friendly amendment to propose a start date for the candidate
of any time from September 13 to September 17 with full communication of our schedule and expectation that Sep-
tember 23 would be the first Sunday in the pulpit. Kevin Buchanan will moderate the September 12 session meeting.
Interim Pastor’s Report: It was a joy to celebrate the wedding of Rosetta Haynes and Steve Mead. Scott Paul-Bonham
will be filling the pulpit several times.
Treasurer’s Report
The report for the month of June was approved with thanks. Summer collections are lower than the usual lowered
expectations for these months. We are down a net of about $9000 year to date. We are repaying our loan at the nor-
mal amortized rate for now. Mortgage interest was not part of the budget; we should prepare to be in the hole at the
end of the year.

Clerk’s Report: Communion was served during worship on Sunday July 1. The Business Entity Report has been
filed with the State of Indiana. Elders finalized the open/close schedule for July.
Facilities: The weather hasn’t cooperated so the roof work has not begun. The building appraisal has been re-
turned and shared with the finance commission and our insurance agent. He is working on a proposal that would
set a larger deductible than our current very small one.
Finance: The commission voted to keep a $25,000 balance in the piano fund rather than let it grow. We will open
a discount brokerage account at T. D. Ameritrade and close the Hilliard Lyons account in Indianapolis.
Worship: we will need to be involved planning the communion service for Holypalooza.
Mission: Session approved the committee’s recommendation to donate $1500 to 14th and Chestnut Community
Center for summer programming from local benevolence. The Grief Share program has now begun.
A new year of Salt Shakers will begin this fall and sign-up sheets
will be in the Fellowship area beginning Sunday, August 29th. We
will have only three dinners - Fall, Winter and Spring. Please be sure
to add your phone number and your email (if possible), and check if
you are willing to host at your home.
For those of you who are new or have never participated, Salt Shakers are groups of four couples (or
singles) who get together for a meal and fellowship. One couple hosts at their home and each of the
others brings a dish. The next dinner the groups are "shaken up" so that you will have the opportunity
to dine and fellowship with other friends. It is a great way to meet people you may not know and to
get better acquainted with those that you don't get to see very often. Please call Eunice Pate if you
