Activity Place Value [SMART Notebook lesson]
The objective of this activity is to teach students that a digit’s value
changes depending upon it’s position in a number. Students engaging
in this activity will be practicing reading and writing 3-digit numbers
and learning the value of each digit in a 3-digit number.
The activity begins with a “random number generator” on the SMART
board, at which point the students are to build the number with
blocks, then write the number at the bottom of the page, this is called
“Create a Number”.
The next step in the activity is another random number generator on
the SMART board, the teacher can manipulate the range of the
number by changing the range values. Students then must write the
number on the board, as well as writing in the number for “tens” and
the number for “ones”.
The next activity on the SMART board is a game where students must
sort numbers on the screen. Twelve numbers are shown on the
screen and students must drag the numbers to the “less than 50” or
“more than 50” circle.
The next game on the SMART board activity is a screen showing two
playing cards, where students must write the numerical value of the
cards together.
After the card game, there is a dice game where students can actually
“roll the dice” on the screen with the three dice provided and move
the dies around on the screen to make the largest 3-digit number.
There are instructions provided where two students can play together

to see who can come up with the largest number.


The final part of the SMART board activity is a quiz covering the
subject matter that was provided in the activities.
