Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

What is the most interesting thing happening at the Shrine these days? My vote goes to the homeless women’s
health clinic. We co-sponsor this clinic with Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program. The two women
running this program, Andrea Caputo and Mary Ann Ponti are doing a superb job with a steady stream of women in
absolutely heart-wrenching life situations.

Some appropriate words from Pope Francis on the occasion of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed
Virgin Mary (August 15, 2016): “The Lord stoops over the humble, to raise them up, as the Canticle of
the Magnificat proclaims. This hymn of Mary also leads us to think of the many current painful situations, in
particular of women overwhelmed by the burden of life and by the tragedy of violence, of women enslaved by the
oppression of the powerful, of children forced into inhuman labour, of women obliged to surrender in body and in
spirit to the greed of men. May they begin as soon as possible a life of peace, of justice, of love, awaiting the day in
which they will finally feel they are held by hands which do not humiliate them, but which lift them tenderly and
lead them on the path of life, to heaven. May Mary, a maiden, a woman who suffered a great deal in her life, make
us think of these women who suffer so much. Let us ask the Lord that He himself may take them by the hand and
lead them on the path of life, freeing them from these forms of slavery.”

Executive Director

Plans are well underway for our Franciscan

Dinner and Pope Francis Award. Please plan
to join us at our new venue, The Westin
Boston Waterfront Hotel on Thursday,
October 25, 2018 for an evening to celebrate
and support the extraordinary work of the
Franciscan Friars on Arch Street. This year the
focus is on the women we serve –the poor, the
alienated and those who seek compassion and
acceptance.

We are proud to boast of this year’s Pope Francis Award recipient, The
Honorable Regina L. Quinlan-Doherty (ret.). Regina is an inspiration to those
who know her for her courage, conviction and devotion to the Catholic faith.
She served many years on the Superior Court, bringing justice to every
person who came before her, regardless of his or her economic status,
ethnicity or religious beliefs.

Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Ms. Lorrie Higgins will serve as Honorary chairs,
along with Angela Menino, Ginger McCourt and Kathy O’ Donnell. Joanne
Hidaka and Ben Niedermeyer are graciously serving as co-chairs again this
year. A heartfelt thank you to each of you.

Our fundraising goal this year is an ambitious $1 million. To date we have

raised $365,000. If you would like information about becoming a sponsor,
please see Father Tom Conway, OFM, or Maryanne Rooney-Hegan, Director
of Development 617-778-1645. Thank you.
